Jewell: A Rude Awakening
Saturday, 25th Aug 2012 18:11

Blues boss Paul Jewell says his side’s 6-0 defeat at Blackpool was a rude awakening after their good start to the Championship season. The Town manager didn’t think anyone could have foreseen the eventual result during the first half.

Jewell said: “I don’t think that in the first 44 minutes you could see that coming. I thought we had as much of the ball as them. But we didn’t do an awful lot with it and we gifted them goals.

“The second goal came at a crucial time, right on half-time, and it meant it was going to be an uphill task in the second half. But once the third goal went in, we capitulated, I have to say.

“I think it’s a rude awakening,” he added. “I think the spirit in the squad is good, there’s no doubt about that, but that’s a test what happens out there.

“We played exceptionally well on Tuesday, battled away against Blackburn and in a week we’ve gone from the sublime to the ridiculous. That’s been our Achilles’ heel for a long time. On our day we’re good but when we’re not on our day...

“I wouldn’t say that it was one-way traffic in the first half today, we were definitely in the game but we didn’t do enough in their box and when it came in our box we just gave silly goals away.”

The Blues boss thought his side were particularly susceptible on the break: “They counter-attacked us all the time. It wasn’t as if they had bouts of pressure and were banging on the door and banging on the door.

“The sixth goal was a classic. We’re 5-0 down a we’ve got four players out the game with a minute to go. We lose it and they’re back at us.

“Counter-attacking’s hurt us badly today and when we’ve had the ball in situations, we haven’t done enough with it, and when the ball’s been turned over we’ve been exposed.”

Jewell had praise for the opposition: “They’re a good team. You can’t give teams like this goals like we did and expect to win matches.

“They’ve got a lot of flair players in their team, who work exceptionally hard and they’re a good team. But to lose 6-0 feels horrible.”

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway thought the result flattered his side: “This time of year you get the odd freak result, and I think that was one, to be perfectly blunt.

“I think to go in at half-time the reflection of the game was wrong. I didn’t think we deserved to have a two-goal lead. Our goalie made a brilliant save.

“I thought they got out too easy, I thought they passed it, they looked dangerous and it flattered us at half-time, to be perfectly honest.

“I went mad at half-time, I didn’t think we understood how to win the ball back, they had too much time on it. They caused my back four too many problems because the midfield didn’t get it right.

“In the second half I was delighted. I thought we were much better. And we needed to be. Goals change games, that’s what I keep talking about, and so far we’ve managed to get them a the right times, at vital times, in the early games.”

Its true freak results do happen early season, ask any Arsenal fans, not even town has conceded 8 but they turned their season around after a poor start. We haven't started badly, at least in comparison to seasons not to long ago. The important thing now, that will show if we've learn't from and moved forward from similar results is the reaction to the next game or two. What I don't want to see is another Peterborough performance following the Southampton game. Carlisle and more importantly Huddersfield matches could provide a lot of pointers to whether the club and players have moved forward.
I'm not panicking I just want to see improvement and lessons learn't. Surely not to much to ask is it???

Well not exactly what I was hoping for, but looks like we are STILL susceptible on the counter which has always been our issue for last few seasons. Also I do not agree it is the formation more the personnel. If we are going to play one up top it has to be someone who can hassle the back four all the time (Drogba, the guy from Soton whose name escapes me or dare I say a holt). JET either needs to pull his finger out for a full 90 mins or he will be sitting on the subs bench. For all Martins running he does not 1. create enough 2. score enough. Agree with Keanishes post completely regarding the right back situation and the rest actually. Oh and the two having a spat give it a rest. Although the my dad is bigger than your dad type argument (with I have played at this standard and coached at this) is brilliantly childish. Class. Seriously who gives a sh!t.

I've said it previously - the core of ITFC support has changed dramatically for the worse - for the only time in 40+ years of supporting / following this Club, I now see evidence of a high percentage of supporters who obviously, and continuously, condone failure.
Even more bizarrely, these people do not even expect to see progress - maybe it's a case of not understanding the meaning of the word !!.

There are some on here who seem to relish turning on management and the team as soon as things go wrong. Of course criticism is warranted on occasions but many of these posters omitted to comment on the first two good results preferring instead to take the first opportunity to turn on their own team. For me a supporter should be there to support during good and bad times. PJ has identified where we need strengthening so if you want to be a supporter you would be much more effective by getting behind him and the team.

Kerryblue, bit harsh mate, I would say lets learn from this, not dwell on it like we did last year, and move onto focussing on Huddersfield next Saturday.

In short, lets move on people, 1 result does NOT decide a season, even one as bad as this. And give Blackpool some credit, they are a good side and the boy Ince is going to be a very good player, certainly better than his dad!

Better to have this result now and against a team like Blackpool rather than a month or so's time when the same team has consistently being played together against Millwall, lessons MUST be learnt quickly so we don't fall off the play-off places quickly (not that I can see us making them) but it can become very discouraging for supporters if this happens by lets say October.
Big couple of months coming up for Jewell.

TimmyH, couldnt agree with you more mate, lets not collapse in October/November like we have the last couple of seasons as your right, if the seasons effectively dead as the club can forget about attendances improving.

Massive couple of months coming up for PJ. Time to seriously earn his money.

@Talbs - nobody saw this result coming and we thought that those fumpings were over with Smith/Chambers looking a more formidable partnership. Mr Smith is a strange player and I'm sure it's more about confidence with him and maybe it's time for a rest and maybe give N'Daw a chance as CB for the next week (he's played as center back before?).
This will be a big wake up for the team and will shock PJ into maybe making some signings before August is out, but not expecting anybody of note as it seems our owner is resolute on the purse strings for the moment. I'd personally give PJ until around October before I make my mind up about him (not that it makes any difference) but I get the jist that's when quite a majority of supporters will start losing patience IF these types of results and inconsistency continues.

Timmy, you make a good point about the wake up call. Yesterday's performance has probably got ME's attention and this could actually be a blessing in disguise if PJ needs a few more quid to swing a couple of signings.

TimmyH, your spot on. Smith is an enigma, I think somewhere in there is a potentially quality centre half, however he sometimes puts in a horrendous 90 mins although I wasnt at the game Yesterday so couldnt say whether yesterday was one of those games.

I dont know if N'Daw is the answer at the back, isnt he predominantly a midfielder, wouldnt it be another square peg in a round hole? I think what yesterday does demosntrate is that the squad/team can still capitulate at times and I think another cb is needed and I'd like pj to look for a Tony Mowbray type of CB, i.e an experienced CB who isn't Pele, but does the simple things extremely well. A bit of a hard buggar who is a tad scary!

We need at least 2 more, at least a CB and striker in my view, but lets stay positive here, I still think this young squad has a lot of potential.

yep agreed the nucleus is there but unfortunately we're a bit ragged around the edges which consequently lets ourselves down, agreed about the CB issue . Still signings need to be made, before the season began I didn't think we need to make many as this just leaves PJ mucking around with his starting 11 (as he did for much of the first half of last season) but then a more settled look evolved second half but some of those players have gone, Murphy and Leadboots (who no doubt upped his game for a new contract) so we defo need a strong attacking midfielder (left sided) or striker, possibly another CB at least. Hope PJ doesn't start tinkering again with the team, the only concerns I'd say would be JET and the form of Smith.

Talbs77 added 21:19 - Aug 26
Yeah JET has really started poorly which is a shame as I think he could be a top player if he can just be a bit more consistant. I, like you, thought town didnt need to go mad in the market and to a certain extent, I still think that, certainly no need to panic.

Leadboots as you call him was a massive disapointment and only improved when looking for a move with probably one of his best games at home to boro (coincidence??). I wasnt gutted to get him off the payroll thats for sure.

Yeah I hope pj doesnt start freaking out and changing the team constantly like he did pre Peterboro last year as well as publicly criticising players to the press like he did with Martin although saying that, when he did come back into the squad his performances improved.

Do you think there is somthing fundamentally wrong at the club, has the club moved any further forwards since Clegg/ME arrived? Sorry to be so deep so late on a sunday nite but its a thought that has occured to me more than once than once the last couple of years.

right you lot stop deluding yourselfs, yet again we will be nothing more than below average championship side this season until ME spends some money or jewell goes

Talbs - really difficult to tell if there is something deep rootedly wrong at the club, but as you have said Ipswich never tend to do well with money, went pair-shaped when we started buying bad players in the transfer market in our second season in the Premiership 2001-02 and really since ME and Clegg have been here nothing has improved on the pitch in fact we have gone backwards, when we have tight budgets or should I say no wealthy owner and rely on shrewd buys/local lads/and basically hungry ambitious people around the club we do better.
I do get the feeling though that the 'ambition' around the club and buzz we had when we first got Keane in as manager is now somewhat dwindling away, as PJ continues his stay here the ambition again seems to sink further and with ME strangely tight on transfer money as other clubs invest more only adds to this feel. As others have mentioned there are rumours that ME will only open the purse strings again once PJ has proved himself or not after the coming months which could be perfectly true.
I say stick behind the team don't make rash decisions and change the starting 11 too much and hopefully we'll get 2 more players in this week.
The key is consistency which we all want too see, If PJ can't do this in the coming months then get a decent manager in with a good coaching team. Harry, Alan or even George will do.

I would like to see us playing with three centre backs, with Tommy on the left of a three. The lad can play but he always seem to have an error in him. Tommy played on the left of three central defenders for New Zealand at the last world cup and did well.

Cressy and Carlos I think would very suited to playing as wing backs.

Yesterday was horrible, I was at the game as well but hopefully this young team will learn from it.

The thing is ipswich61 that fans like you make it so depressing to support the team. One bad result is the end of the world! Granted I'm only 23 so I hardly saw the glory days of Ipswich town and have only (really) known us in the top league for two years of my life, but what happened to 'Ipswich til I die' attitude of the fans and the belief regardless of what is going on in the club?? Attendances are dire and the fans that do go only sing when we're winning and on top of that idiots like you can not wait for us to lose so you can have a good old moan about it! Don't get me wrong this is a terrible result but ITS ONE GAME AND WE'RE ONLY 3 IN!!! There's often a shock team who go up too. Norwich had a pretty awful team when they went up, as did blackpool a few years ago and burnley AND Derby, that's just off the top of my head, I'd say we are on par with those teams that went up! So rather than sitting around taking your terrible life out on here how about you get behind the boys and start being a real fan yeah.

COYB!!

If we were a club in financial trouble and the owner was looking for someone to buy the club, then I think that would explain why we haven't signed anyone, got such a crap squad and why he hasn't got rid of our inept manager.

It seems like ME is trying offload ITFC, as he's found out like everyone else that running an unsuccessful football club is a complete waste of money. It also explains why PJ hasn't said anything about our pitiful transfer budget.

ipswich1die we should not be letting in 6 goals in 1 game, ive been supporting ipswich since 1972 and ive never seen so much negativity until the last 2 seasons,im not the only 1 who thinks jewell should go,in my opinion he should have gone last season, and timmyh if ME wont release funds until jewell proves himself, well it sounds like he will be going because jewell will not improve unless he has funds to fill the squad with the needed players, iyts as simple as that, the likes of bristol city and brighton are beating us to players, what hope have we got attendances will fall well below 15,000 before to long
