Player Town Close to Signing Not a Striker
Player Town Close to Signing Not a Striker
Friday, 20th Jul 2012 14:01

TWTD has learnt that the player Paul Jewell is close to making his fourth signing of the summer is not a striker. While the Blues have held talks with former England international Emile Heskey, he's not the man Jewell was referring to when he said he was hoping to add to his squad in the next few days.

Speaking after last night’s 1-1 draw at Den Bosch, Jewell revealed that another signing was close to being done but wouldn’t confirm where the mystery man played: “We’re hopeful of getting certainly one in pretty quickly.”

Chief executive Simon Clegg similarly said he expected another deal soon at the press conference where new keeper Scott Loach was officially paraded yesterday afternoon: “One deal is moving from tepid to fairly warm. I’m hopeful that over the next couple of days we can make another announcement.”

We understand that that player — who could be confirmed as a Town signing early next week - isn’t Heskey or any other striker with Jewell also looking to add to central midfield in addition to his attack.

Speaking after yesterday’s game, the Town boss said: “We’re going to need a big centre forward, someone who is going to give us a bit of physicality up front, and then the same in the middle of the park.

“We’re at least two players light to just give us that bit of presence and that’s where we’re looking to strengthen.”

Talks with Heskey are understood to be at a relatively early stage.

Doubt that its Cheick Kourama as that deal is pretty common knowledge so Clegg or Jewell would not of been so evasive. Probably that keeper we have on trial

Luke Freeman is a great call and was very impressive in the play offs against Sheffield United. I know you can't judge a player over 2 games but those displays suggest to me he is just the player we need on the left side of midfield. Go and get him Paul wages should not be a problem but no doubt Stevenage will ask a ridiculous price. An even higher price will be put on Boyd if the eccentric Fry has anything to do with it.

Good that Scott Loach signed and another couple in be nice to see someone like Luke Freeman to come to town another possibility is Michail Antonio from reading maybe pacey winger did well at Sheffield Wednesday but he will probably go there but them two are good options to go for at the moment Greg Halford is another good option as well

Lots of people have been guessing that it's Cheick Kourouma but I can't see that it can be when the previous article said 'Jewell says there has been no progress on cutting through the red tape which is preventing Cheick Kourouma from signing on the dotted line'.
Regarding Boyd and Freeman, I would love it if one of them came here but we all know that Jewell is avoiding spending bi money this summer.Although he may be spending less now so that he can spend more later on. Who knows.

dundeetractorboy - Freeman started as a striker in Arsenal youths but Im sure Stevenage use him as a winger so wouldn't have thought he'd be ruled out.

Back in for Moussi with all that's going on at Forrest, could be tempted to jump ship.

Did Richard Keogh join Derby!!? We can't be happy play a whole season with 3 central defenders surely? Especially seeing as Tommy has been playing all summer.

Doubt Ainsley will play too much this year either unless at full-back.

I thought Keogh would have been a shoe-in to come here.

Would guess it's a midfielder then - unless it's Kello?

Good news that the Heskey deal is apparently a 'long way off' (according to the EADT).

@ChrisMakin2012. Yes the named players have gone past their peak but heskey and Owen would both be good in the championship and it would be more a case of them taking their pick of which club to join. They are still good players, just not good enough for a starting place in a premiership side.

Suffolkpoker, very funny. Genuinely laughed out loud.

Heskey is awful. Murphy isn't what we need at all. Someone younger and quicker please.
