Chopra Back From California
Chopra Back From California

Town striker Michael Chopra has completed his stay at a California health farm and flew back to the UK overnight. Last month, TWTD revealed that the 28-year-old would be spending time in the US as part of his preparations for the new season.

Chopra, who scored 14 goals during a 2011/12 campaign affected by off-field issues, tweeted that he’s returning home fitter and out to improve on that in the year ahead: “In LA airport now, training camp done. Lost quite a bit of weight, looking forward to the new season, people will see a new Michael.”

The former England U21 international lost 3kg during his week at the Ashram Healthort in Calabasas, California and says he's in the best shape he has been in since he joined the Blues a year ago: "After hiking and running up and down mountains for a week and only eating fruit and veg, the results speak for themselves.

"Very hard week's training, the results show before and after think I'll be flying next season best I've felt since I got to the play-off final with Cardiff."

Chopra also tweeted photos and a chart outlining the progress he made during his week in the States.

The Ashram costs $4,500 a week with showbiz figures such as Oprah Winfrey, Dan Aykroyd, Shirley MacLaine, Jane Fonda and Faye Dunaway previous guests.

In May, Blues boss Paul Jewell revealed that his squad had been given individual fitness plans for what is a longer than usual close season due to the Olympics and that some of them would be going on what he referred to as ‘holidays’.

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas’s individual programme has involved him coming into the club periodically since the end of May to work on his fitness. The Blues’ pre-season proper begins on Thursday 5th July.

I wonder who paid for this jolly? Three weeks in these places aren't cheap.

Hugo - I imagine it was paid for by the club, who will be as keen to maximise the return on their not inconsiderable investment in Chopra, as we will be to see him bang in 20+ goals this season. COYB!

Sounds good - he'll fire us up towards the top 6. If we can also find a defence . . . .

Agreed warwickblue, a potential 20/25 goals if fit and available for the whole season.

These are very positive comments from the players. I guess time will tell whether they have all made the most of the break to recharge their batteries and will return ready to go again for the season ahead.Persoanlly, I think we have some very good players at PR and hope that the new signings to come, compliment a very attacking minded and excitingteam that we have the basis of.

A leaner, fitter Michael Chopra without a quarter of a million pounds worth of debt to a loan shark and the Geordie Mafia on his back can only be a good thing. Looking forward to seeing him back in action!

This is brilliant news. Chopra looked overweight last season, especially towards the end. If he can get back to full fitness, he could get back to being one of the top, if not the top, scorer in the Championship next season. Despite all the problems last season he still scored 14, which is the most scored by an Ipswich player since Alan Lee in 2006/7.

Good man!

Chopra never looked quite trim enough for my liking so to hear that he's lost weight is great. His work rate is fantastic but his lack of pace always frustrated me so maybe this will improve now.

As Mark says, despite not setting Portman road on fire last season he still got 14 goals which is a respectable total and more than any town player has got for years. I don't see why he can't improve on it, just needs to score more regularly really.

Would Michael Chopra bet on himself to get 20 goals a season ?

Hopefully he will have a better season but he promised us last season he would get us 20 goals and look what happened, I think sorting out his personal life is the big issue here. Best of luck for the new season.

Welcome back Chops. Sounds very promising. Let's hope PJ can find him a second striker to play along with chops. What did'nt help Chops last season was the 4-5-1 with Chops upfront on his own. Let's hope we play a more exciting 4-4-2 with a solid defence and great attacking options.

@bluearmy4life - but then where do you play Martin, on the wing? He's a much better player down the middle for me.

Stick with 4-2-3-1 I say with Martin causing all the problems behind Chopra. If Murphy signs then we have him on the left but able to move upfront later in games if need be to support Chops.

@garv. Like your idea on Martin and murph. Just hope we sign murphy. His work rate last season was fantastic and he worked well on the left.
