Town Talking to Former Loanee Fuller
Town Talking to Former Loanee Fuller
Thursday, 24th May 2012 00:09

Town are understood to be in talks with out-of-contract Stoke striker Ricardo Fuller, who looks likely to leave the Britannia Stadium this summer. The one-time Blues loanee was previously linked with a return to Portman Road in April when Wigan and Cardiff were also said to be interested in the 32-year-old.

Fuller spent time on loan with Town towards the end of the 2005/06 season, scoring two goals in three games as well as picking up a red card which brought his spell to an early end.

Then-boss Joe Royle was keen to sign the Jamaican international from Southampton on a permanent basis that summer but the £500,000 fee was beyond the club at the time and Fuller joined Stoke, where he has enjoyed a highly-success six years, helping them into the Premier League in 2007/08.

However, the ex-Preston, Portsmouth and Crystal Palace man, who is currently away with Jamaica, had limited opportunities during 2011/12 and appears set to move on having made 137 starts and 71 sub appearances for the Potters and scoring 50 goals.

Town boss Paul Jewell is in the main targeting younger players this summer but may also look to augment his squad with one or two more experienced performers.

I did wonder about him as an option but thought we already have an aging Scotland do we need another aging striker. He's been a decent player in his time though and I guess he'd be a replacement for Ellington?

PJ aiming another over 30 player??? Competition for Scotland perhaps. Not sure if this is a shrew or poor decision should it materialize - like Ellington...

Not too bad of a player and i think he still has some things to prove. Really think we need another striker because chops isn't a scorer every game.

To all the negative comments, two words for you all. JASON ROBERTS.

Can see this being either a huge success, or a bit of a disaster...if he signs that is. Wouldn't surprise me if he did.

Part of me says I'd love to see him at town. Power-house that we're in desperate need of. Murphy is physical but I'm not sure he's mobile enough.

Another part of me says we're only going to have him for a year or two if we're lucky and he's any good. I just hope we don't rely on him throughout the season.

Jason Roberts? If I was Reading I would play Le Fondre ahead of him. True he scored a few but he's on hella wage, you'll never make a profit on him.

Garv added 00:58 - May 24
Why do you have to make a profit on every signing you make? If he gets you to the premier league he's probably made you quite a lot of money anyway!

daniel2302 added 00:59 - May 24
Before Roberts arrived at reading they were in terrible form, having him upfront totally changed their season.

Roberts scored 6 goals in 17 games i think, in a team that creates a lot of chances, not overly impressive ...better value for money elsewhere.

Garv - you don't HAVE to make money on each signing but when you loosing 6 million a year as a club and need to free up money to deal with the fair play rules it's got to be a huge thought. Fuller imho is not good enough for 20 goals a season but his wage would suggest that. Look elsewhere. Rather pay a bigger up front fee and lower wages on someone youthful we could hope to profit on.

The team hit form as soon as he came in, not saying he helped but the team were more settled and started scoring lots once he had joined.

In the main PJ is targeting young players , nothing wrong with dropping a bit of experience in there too . Kevin Phillips ? 37 or 38 ? top scorer ?

32-y-o striker with glass knees & a poor disciplinary record - no thanks.

Reading made one hell of a profit, aprox 60 Million by going up

Maybe town think Scotland is not going to sign up? good player to have in
the squad even if we still have Scotland

Not inspiring but will be a good, solid signing who'll give us the physical presence in the box we've missed! Would like to see someone a bit more dynamic with pace partner chops but that requires cash!!

Good player and I expect would score goals for us. Would be interesting to see Scotland and Fuller up front. If the clock was wound back a couple of years then there would be some very excited posts on here!
Don't forget the loyalty Scotland has shown the club by waivering his automatic additional year on his contract before you all start discarding him for being too old e.t.c. he still has a part to play IMO.

Fuller is a good play and even if jewell says he wants to sign younger plays I feel that a bit of experienced is A good thing for us to have in the team

seems PJ has started to run around like a headless chicken early this year, muttering "who shuld i sign, don't ask me. I haven't a clue"

If we signed fuller it would be a great forward line with chopra & Scotland at championship level.
Then again do we really need him? He's 32 now.
I think it would be good to give chopra & Scotland some competition up front but with someone younger. When are thinking about signing a defender or 2??

This is becoming a joke. Jewell is an old school football manager with old school ideas which is why we are bringing in old school players. These players do not care about the heritage of our club and are just seeing out their career by putting in a performance every now and again. It is a big reason why there is a drinking culture within the club and very little concern between the team if we win or lose. Fuller will be his prize signing and we will face another season struggling in the Championship.

The greater problem is that our owners are not football people or the real problem is that they have not hired a football man to run the club. Jewell is one of these managers who can sell ice to eskimos (think ron atkinson, terry venables, ian dowie etc). Managed to blagg his poor performace over the last 18 months on injuries, bad luck, chopra's gambling etc and now managing to persuade them to go for some more players who have got star names from their perfomances3-4 years ago.

I have not been on here screaming for Jewell's head - in fact, I have stayed quite composed on the whole mattet considering what has been going on over the last 18 months. Jewell needs to go but that won't happen for a good few months but before that we need to get rid of Clegg and get in someone who understands football, the clubs traditions and will not full for the old school manager bullsh*t.

In the mean time, I will continue t shudder every time a new transfer target is announced. Happy days!
