Jewell: We Did Enough to Win
Jewell: We Did Enough to Win
Saturday, 14th Apr 2012 18:02

Blues boss Paul Jewell felt his side deserved more than just a point from their trip to Crystal Palace. Jason Scotland’s second half goal saw Town to a 1-1 draw after Chris Martin had put the Eagles in front during a first period in which the Blues were very much on top.

Jewell said: “I thought we dominated the first half completely. They had a chance for Darren Ambrose and the goal, but I thought we were outstanding football-wise. The only thing that was missing was that killer instinct.

“We had 10 crosses and 10 shots as the away team. We passed the ball really well. The only thing that was missing was a goal. I don’t think it was a fair result, but you’re never disappointed when you come from behind.”

He felt the first half performance was one of his team’s best passing displays of the campaign: “I don’t know what the possession stats were but sometimes we were overpassing it. There were some quality balls going across the box, but we didn’t have enough devilment.

“I know we’re talking about a world class striker, but someone like Shearer would have had a hat-trick today with the balls going across the box.

“We’ve got to want to score more goals and get across people in the box. Arran’s made a good save at 0-0 from Ambrose but other than that and the goal, I don’t think they’ve really had a shot.”

The Blues boss says his players have got to be prepared to put their heads in where it hurts inside the penalty area: “To score goals you’ve got to get a cut eye - you get your just rewards if you’re brave.

"I’m not going to be too critical of the players but the only thing missing, certainly in the first half was that. We had 10 crosses go in from those crosses I don’t think we made the keeper make a save.

“We had plenty of shots, twice as many as them but, even though we’ve scored a lot of goals this year, in the last five or six games we’ve struggled because we’ve had lots of possession but we haven’t made it count.”

Jewell had praise for scorer Scotland, who he believed came close to a goal in the first half when his volley was stopped by Julian Speroni: “Their keeper made a fantastic save from Jason in the first half when he tipped it around the post and it was a really good goal.

“I thought we had our worst spell just after we scored. They’re a hard team to play against Palace. I think Dougie’s done a great job here. They hit you on the break and counter-attack with their pace, but I thought we played well today.”

The Liverpudlian had praise for central midfield pairing Grant Leadbitter and Andy Drury, who he said ran the first half: “I though Grant and Andy Drury were terrific in the middle of the park. We got the ball wide, we got crosses in. I couldn’t be critical of them in the first half other than that we were a goal down and asking them how much we want to score goals.”

Jewell says he has no new injuries from today’s game but that keeper Richard Wright tore his cartilage in training: “He had a scan on Thursday afternoon and it revealed a little nick in his cartilage and looks like he’ll probably need a scope.”

Wright would appear unlikely to feature again this season with his third spell at the club set to come to an end this summer.

Palace boss Dougie Freedman felt the game ended in the right scoreline: “I thought it was a fair result. We’re a little bit disappointed after taking the lead.

“But I felt that Ipswich had a very experienced side out there today and it was hard to cope with them at times, very clever movement from them.

“Maybe when you look back on it it was a good point. It stopped the rut that we’ve been in for the last three or four games.”

Keanish... as always a very considered post, one i totally agree with. you are one of the more sensible posters on here. Let me just add this, we will continue to be a midtable team if we dont give managers time, its very rare for managers to achieve over night success. lets face it, Jewells first job was to keep us up, after he joined and that he did. So looking at the actual picture this is his first season (full) in charge. He has made some mistakes, but i am all for a bit of continuity. Next season with 3-4 signings i can see us pushing top six....coyb

The difference there Brittaniaman in my opinion is that Brendan Rogers took over from Sosua who already had the nucleus of an excellent side after all the good work Martinez had done for the club. I think our situation post a year and half of the Dark Lord and the somewhat fragmented end of Magilton's reign has given Jewell a tougher start than some give him credit for.

I agree with Dissboyitfc. Jewell's signings this summer are critical to our top 6 push next season. I'm praying we can tie the Pearce and Ward deals up early summer and add a midfielder like Green or Clingan early on too.

Interesting to see whether we move for Coppinger again or whether Murphy has done enough.

That then leaves a quality young striker and a solid keeper to complete the squad for what i believe will be a successful campaign.

Two excellent posts from Keaneish above. While I understand the frustration of many fans/posters, which I share, at the apparent lack of progress & some dreadful performances, I would ask you to consider the points that Keaneish has made in order to put things into context.
Those of us who are not screaming for PJ to be sacked are not automatically PJ-lovers (no pun intended) as is sometimes argued. Sometimes things are not black or white, but are a bit more complex. He was my choice when appointed, nor have I 100% congidences

Bloomin'mobile internet!

To finish: ... nor have I 100% confidence in him, but I've seen enough of an improvement over the last few months to make me believe we're a side capable of being top 6 next season, despite all the difficulties (some of his own making) mentioned above.

Ok, that should have been "WASN'T my choice".

Don't think we'll be after Coppinger, now that Sharp has moved. Thought it was a good move to try & get a striker and his main supplier, who had built up an understanding already, at the time. Pity we didn't get them, or Lambert, or Moussi, or Ferdinand, or Upson or some of the other decent players than PJ had identified and moved on.
Not a fan of Green however & would much prefer to see Hyam in that role, if set up with holding midfielder, next season.

Blue041273 Point taken. Agree with what you say to a point.could happen like you say would not be a bad thing to happen,But I think that it would be unlikely.I think he may be trying to secure a position as a Coach as he stated in one article. But as he stated that was for the future. But with these injuries he has been getting it may bring his dream that little bit closer? Is finally a bit of piece of mind to know we have two strikers that can and do score goals

Never asked for PJ to be sacked; just sometimes he would not come out with such stupid comments like we did enough to win the game. You didnt because you got a draw. He needs to try and keep his thoughts to himself as he sounds ridiculous with some of his comments. I am sure now we will move on next season with the addition of a few more players defence and goalkeeper and a big target man. I was not aware Roberts turned us down one I obviously missed. Soz

going back to the Headline... if we did enough to win, then surely we would have come away with 3 points and not 1... so at the end of the day we were not clinical enough again : )

Well PJ we didn't because you need to score one more goal than the opposition to do that!

Well heres looking toward next season I have said before on here that I really do believe we will be in a playoff place at least next season ( juding form this hlaf of the season) I really hope for PJ that the team gets off the blocks quickly as the sentiment is that the fan base are impatient to see improvment and we need to win at least the first three games to abait the discontent..felt. I for one would be paitent upto Christmas we should be in good form by then and either in a play of place or bubling just under thats where we nedd to be and looking at the way the team have jelled this part of the season I think it is more than do..able. Yes there is still alot that needs sorting and a lot that can go wrong but I put my faith in my club to want the very best out comes and want to see the numbers swell when we play. Personally I will know first quater of next season if we are failing as my target would be top ten position in the first quater then to nail a play off position 2 and 3rd quater and finally secure the postion by the last quater so thats how I see it I hope you will all get behind the team next season be patient lets see what signings are made in the summer and once we know whos staying and whos going will make for a clearer position for PJ and the boys...
