Henderson Determined to Stay at Pompey and Fight for Survival
Henderson Determined to Stay at Pompey and Fight for Survival
Monday, 5th Mar 2012 11:15

Portsmouth keeper Stephen Henderson says he wants to stay with the crisis club to try to help them avoid relegation to League One but admits that the decision might be taken out of his hands. The former Irish U21 international was amongst the Blues’ trio of January Pompey targets with chief executive Simon Clegg telling TWTD that the move is still “a live issue” on Friday.

Henderson, 23, told the Portsmouth News: “I want to be here playing for these fans and doing everything I can to keep them up. I’ve said that and I stand by it.

“The decision may be out of my hands, though. Some of the boys have had to go because of the situation we are in.

“The way I feel, though, is I want to stay and keep this team in the Championship. It has to be done, though. I hate to say it but it’s either that or we go under.

“That’s the reality of it. The administrator is a good man and he is keeping us in the loop about the cutbacks and everything we need to do.

“There’s not a better man to get this club back on its feet. But I’m just going to keep playing unless I’m told to go. One thing’s for sure, I won’t go without a fight.”

"But I'm just going to keep playing unless I'm told to go. One thing's for sure, I won't go without a fight.”

Rather keep ALB.

Not too bright this kid, is he?

Tractorboy24 added 11:48 - Mar 5
What else is the kid going to say? He's at a club which is scrapping to stay in business, the fans are passionate, and demand it from their players. He's hardly going to say 'I want a move because I enjoy getting paid' is he? This loyalty is from giving him his break, he's not even been there a season so I doubt he'd not put any effort in were he to move.

I would say though, from what I've seen I'd rather guzan, as I think he's a better gk than those people are asking for (Henderson, loach and Lewis).

Scott Loach for me ,True blue and free in the summer

Credit for his passion but he's only a few years into his career and he's declaring his loyalty to a sinking ship.

This just isn't smart, I might've done something like that at 19 but at his age you should be thinking long-term.

If this lad has an agent he must be short of a few grey cells.

I'd get him out of there quick sharp.
If he's playing a game of brinkmanship then so be it. You raise the risk to get rewards, but it seems the only reward they are going to get is a pat on the back and an IOU in the post.

Why stay? This is beyond loyalty, it's about earning a living!

No heart, jesus wept, some of you are clueless. Lets stick to signing complete mercenaries then eh?

Tractorboy, totally agree - if it was us in that position that is exactly what I would want to hear from the players - cant see Jimmy B or Leadboots coming out with this.
With regard to keeper - don't want Loach, he may be free but he has been awful this season and the Watford fans I know really don't rate him. the lad from Villa sounds a better bet. Not really sure why we got rid of Fulop to be honest.

I was thinking that Henderson was born in Portsmouth, but I see his place of birth is Dublin. Still, it could be argued that he is showing loyalty to his team and that is a good trait for a player to have. Sadly, there may soon no longer be a Portsmouth team for him to play for.

Leave these Portsmouth players alone, they clearly don't want to come (or more likely their agents know there are clubs interested so are telling the players to play the loyalty card in the hope that a bigger offer comes in which could all backfire and when Portsmouth go under they'll be glad to pick up a pay cheque each month) I'd rather see Guzan come in, as for Scott Loach, i really don't know enough about him apart from he came through our system and is a fan. Doesn't automatically qualify him to be good enough though.

Rangers may have to get rid of Neil Alexander due to their current woes.

Would welcome him back with open arms !!
