Jewell Delighted With Victory
Jewell Delighted With Victory
Saturday, 3rd Mar 2012 18:16

Blues boss Paul Jewell was delighted with his side's 3-0 home victory over Bristol City. Goals from Michael Chopra - his sixth in six matches - Tommy Smith and Andy Drury saw his team to a comfortable win.

Jewell said: “I thought we played really well. I thought from start to finish we played at a really good tempo and created numerous opportunities.

“My only concern at half-time was that they were still in the game. We should have put them to bed and we had to rely on Alex to make a really good save to keep it 1-0.

“We had 17 crosses and 14 attempts on goal in the first half and I thought some of our play and closing down was great.

“We went out there in the second half and didn’t play as well as we did in the first, but we scored two more goals.”

Goalscorer Tommy Smith added: "I think we were on top for the majority of the game and in the end thoroughly deserved the win.

"The lads performed really well and David James has pulled off a couple of great saves from Chops, so we could have scored a couple more.

"I was delighted to score and I thought I was going to score another, but unfortunately my header came back off the bar, but to win the game and perform so well was the most pleasing thing and it sets us up nicely for Tuesday's trip to Southampton."

Bristol City boss Derek McInnes kept his players in the dressing room for some while after the final whistle and admitted they were well beaten: "Clearly the best team won. Ipswich were the better team in the first half and we were fortunate to only be 1-0 down.

"But we kept their better players quiet in the second half, got the ball forward quicker and the game was more evenly poised.

"It was a case of whoever scored the second goal. When Ipswich got it, it was always going to be difficult for us.

"One point from six games is poor form from our point of view and we need to generate confidence and belief."

McInnes was unhappy that referee Andy Woolmer changed his mind with regard to the corner which led to Town's second goal, initially awarding a goalkick before correctly reversing the decision on his linesman's advice: "We all expect an honesty in these decisions, but I just find it astonishing that he can allow himself to be overruled by his linesman who is 60 yards away.

"He's got the decision right, but he's wrong to allow himself to be overruled."

Former Blue Jon Stead tweeted his thanks to Town supporters for welcoming him back to Portman Road: "Thanks for the warm reception from #ITFC fans, always nice to see. Good luck for the rest of the season, beat the others round us please!"

Well done boys!

Double celebration for me yesterday; it was my wedding anniversary and the win capped a wonderful day for me! My dear miss us was understanding enough for me to sit in front of the iPad for 2 hours following the game on line (there's an 8 hour time difference with the UK). Kept refreshing the page and seeing 20 or so attempts at goal...amazing...

Great weekend indeed!

I also had a double celebration yesterday was me birthday n watched a town win!! Sitting in Sir Bobby stand lower what a goal by Drury you knew it was goin in the net the second it left his foot!! We have watched some rubbish at Portman road this season at time's I described our defending as disgusting n I guess will take a while for people to forget that. I hope Jewel thinks Hyam is gona be a top player as nothing would fill me with more pride than seeing an Ipswich supporter playing a central role in a promotion winning team of the future. Roll on Southampton we get a win there n ya never know!! if not I'm looking forward to next season

Daley and Jas, the brothers Grim !

Well done the lads et al for a thoroughly entertaining match and result. More like the Ipswich of old. Roll on Southhampton, which we know will be a very different kettle of fish. But as long as we keep up the work ethic and our concentration, you just never know.
P.S. A special ' well done ' to Ryan Stevenson for his cameo contribution, looked good.

bluelady.... i expect it will be a while b4 you read this :) ,hope your head is ok?

I would defend someones right to have an opinion, to the end of the world, so many posts on here are not opinions, not constructive but destructive and born out of the need to get attention and they get it because we keep responding. Lots of the arguments on here are old and boring.

We all know where we need to strengthen. One swallow doesnt make a summer, but 5 wins out of 6 games is certainly heading in the right direction,(and they havent been lucky one nillers) i was on Jewells case after a losing streak, so am more than happy to pat him on the back for this recent run of results.

BTW bluelady, very impressed that after a hard night out :) you still come on here to check out the latest news. Thats a true supporter in my eyes, passionate and yet well balanced in there views and criticism......coyb

Really good solid performance against a poor Bristol City side yesterday.
I don't know why PJ is getting stick for leaving Hyam out the lad has worked his socks of recently and needs a break. He has come in and play 7-8 games from nowhere he needs a breather so get of PJ'S Back. Great goal from Andy Drury yesterday great view from the North stand. Promising times ahead hopefully just need to strengthen the back in the summer and who knows where we can go. COYB

Yes folks. Jas0099 or whatever is conspicuous by his absence. I imagine when Daley's picture was taken Ipswich had just given somebody a tonking. . . he doesn't look happy does he?

ITFC are improving week by week. I wouldn't worry too much about the Brighton result. Gus Poyet is a class manager and I would still tip Brighton to go up this season.

The main point, as I see it, is we are now playing entertaining football again. That aspect seemed to be totally missing when the dark lord was in charge. Even when we won, it was still hit and hope.

Unfortunately, I think Southampton away will result in a defeat for us, but even if that's true, I wouldn't worry too much. You never know though. Maybe Stevenson will be prove to be the new ITFC rocket!! I do hope so.

Missed game yesterday due to flu, but nice to see all the positive comments here for a change. Five wins out of six and we didn`t really play all that badly in the game we lost.

We were so comfortable yesterday, never looked like anything other than 3 points. Great goal by Drury (Adam Drury according to the Football league show) Tommy Smith looked decent and always looks a threat going up for corners. I have been a critic of Grant (the crab) leadbitter but in fairness he had one of his better games. JET had us all excited everytime he picked the ball up (although faded) and Martin and Chopra were excellent again too. We are not far off a decent team with a couple of new faces in the summer defensively. The future is bright!

Daley, Hyam was dropped for footballing reasons, no doubt he'll be back. Look at all the players he's dropped, they tend to come back in even better. Smith is solid at the back, Drury is playing like a world class creative midfielder, Leadbitter wasn't silent yesterday and played very well, Martin, JET and Murphy are all excellent at the moment and they've all been out of the side and Chopra is most clinical striker we've had since Darren Bent and he has been dropped, if these players didn't respect PJ, either as a person or his managerial judgement they wouldn't come back with such improved performances. So if you think that PJ has no managerial ability and that we're on a downward spiral you've obviously not checked out any results of the last 6 games have you.
But then I guess you're really running scared because you know at the end of next season we'll be passing your Nodge when we swap divisions again.

A superb effort by the whole team and rewarded as it should be with the win, Lee Martin is inspirational and Andy Drury is going to be really good for us, it is a pleasure to watch ITFC in action again now, COYB.

A great win so well done all. It's easy to say that we were sure to win against a poor team but in this league there are always shock results and you can take nothing for granted and have to earn your wins. Which we did with bells on. Congrats and the good form continues.

disagree ipswichbusiness, the starting point for any consistency is beating the teams you should be beating. If we'd taken, for instance even 8 points off relegation fodder like Forest and Donny, we'd still be in contention for the play-offs. The nature of this division is that you games against the top half teams inevitable can go either way, you score first, or give away from a deflection of set-piece and you play ok and lose. It's absolutely crucial to make the easy games comfortable and make sure you take the points. Good to see us doing that yesterday.

sexyjimps and sorry, I hope that you are right and I am wrong. However, if we are a good mid-table outfit (as I reckon we are) then it shouldn't take too much work over the summer to turn us into promotion contenders. The absence of Hyam yesterday was odd although it seems it didn't do any harm.

Daleyitfc - the perfect cure for constipation. If only we could bottle and sell it!
Very impressed yesterday - for once actually didn't feel at anytime we could loose it. Drury must have covered every blade of grass and I agree that leadbitter played a solid game. JET's control at times in the first half was unbeliveable - he will be a great player for us. Go to Southampton in the fit frame of mind and I honestly think we could get a surprise 3 points

gilo: sadly jas has posted in the match review. It's the same old pathrtic sh*te. If we do well it's anyone but PJ responsible and if we lose it's all Pjs fault. I know I'm not the only one but I wish he feck off. it's pathetic. He keeps harking about the number of losses, ignoring the 5 wins out of 6, the goals scored record up there with the top of the division and the 3 clea sheets out of 4 which surely all shows that after a poor start things are improving.

It was a good game yesterday, Bristol were very poor, but we played well, created a lot of chances and scored a couple of good goals (and one from a corner, which is a shock in itself). I guess jas won't admit it because he still loves RK, but under RK we woudn't score from a corner because he refused to send enough men up, and always brought the entire team back to defend corners.

Ho hum. At least we're now playing some nice attacking football. Fix the defence and we could be a really decent team next year. But that's irrelevant to jas because all he cares about is the games we lost earlier in the season, not the wins we are currently getting.

Anyway, though Drury had yet another excellent game today and his strike for the goal was superb. JET looked brilliant in the first half, but faded, but all did pretty welll against admittedly weak opposition

daleyitfc: do you have mental problems? Which downward spiral are we on? 5 wins out of 6 seems quite good to me, but obviously you know better.

and yes dropping Hyam may seem harsh but maybe he really was tired which may explain his poorer performance last week, and he's not the type of player you really need on the bench so no need to put him in the 16. But again, I'm sure you know all the reasons behind the decision and so can make strong, over-inflated statements about the situation.

daleyitfc=tit. First game at home i,ve missed this season due to holiday but chuffed as nuts with the result, & by all accounts a very good performance. I,ve been critical of PJ but credit due at the moment to both him & the players. Daleyitfc, Hyam is being rested you cretin, get a life & at least try to have a slightly more balanced view.

It's great to read so many positive comments about the teams play lately. Hopefully another journey to the south coast on Tuesday night to the league leaders, doesn't encourage negative whingers back. We appear to be going in the right direction WHATEVER the result at Southampton. COYB!!
