Delighted Dad Chopra Targeting 20 for the Season
Delighted Dad Chopra Targeting 20 for the Season
Thursday, 16th Feb 2012 09:23

Striker Michael Chopra has revealed that he’s targeting 20 goals in his first season with the Blues and dedicated Tuesday’s winner at Portsmouth to his son Sebastian, who celebrated his fourth birthday yesterday. The goal at Fratton Park took the 28-year-old’s total to 11, despite a year which has seen him spend time in rehab dealing with his gambling problems and spells out of the side.

Tweeting after Tuesday’s 1-0 victory at Pompey, Chopra said: “Another great win tonight. Thanks to Ipswich fans travelling all that way, great support, Another goal tonight, 11 this season only nine more to go for my target.

“My little boy asked me to score for him for his birthday [on Wednesday] and I can't wait to tell him I did and see his smile on his face on his fourth birthday.”

Only five players have scored more goals that Chopra in the Championship this season — Southampton’s Rickie Lambert (16), Ross McCormack of Leeds (15), Burnley’s Jay Rodriguez, Leicester’s David Nugent and Darius Henderson of Millwall (all 12).

The Blues frontman, who signed for £1 million from Cardiff in the summer, is currently level in sixth with Leeds winger Robert Snodgrass and former Town target Billy Sharp, who joined Southampton from Doncaster last month.

Chopra’s recent run of four goals in three games hasn’t gone unnoticed at his former club, who visit Portman Road on Saturday.

Stand-in skipper Peter Whittingham knows his one-time team-mate will be looking to add to the goal he scored against the Bluebirds in the 2-2 draw in Wales earlier in the season to continue his current streak: “Let’s hope Chops isn’t able to hurt us too. He’s a natural goalscorer and he thrives on putting the ball into the net.

“If he scores he is high on confidence and flying. Chops scored the only goal against Portsmouth in midweek — and next he wants to put one over us on Saturday. It’s up to us to make sure he doesn’t.”

Great man mangement on this one....... PJ has his faults we all know that but he seems to have a nack of getting the best out of players ...chops, jet and Martin for example!

Great to see your getting back to good health Michael. Always knew you'd come good - go on and become an ITFC Legend now! Agree with Surco72, PJ got it spot on and by doing so it will only benefit us. Compare it to what we have spent on lesser players in the past and it's a great bit of business for a top goalscorer

I don't understand, is this not the same Michael Chopra that was being panned as an over the hill "waste of money by a rubbish mananger" player a few weeks ago?
He is only 28 and only cost £1m. Despite all his problems (not making excuses, it was fair comment to question this aspect of him in the context of what's best for the club) he has managed 11 league goals. We have to be looking at one of the best pieces of business the club has done in the transfer market in years ... if he continues to make the progress he has in tackling his demons, with the continued excellent support of the club. He is a proven quality striker at Championship level.

Chops is 20/1 to be leading goalscorer in the championship..might be worth a punt!!

"Jordan Rhodes or Michael Chopra?"
Or both...

I'm taking full credit for Chopra's stunning return to form..since I took him out of my fantasy team he's scored 4 in 3..typical!

Keep up the great work Chops...and no,i'm not putting you back in.

Chops, my daughter is 13 at the weekend so it would be nice for her if you would score 2 on Sat against Cardiff to bring your total to 13 for the season

Come on Walberswick, that is out of order!

Oh, and i forgot to mention, my son is 16 in March, so another 3 before mid March would be great.

Walberswick, there's no need for that sort of thing

Credit to Chopra for addressing his problems and getting back to goal scoring form, to the club for supporting him through the worst (which hopefully is behind him) and to Jewell for signing Chopra in the first place.

The low point must have been when Priskin came on as a substitute while Chopra sat and watched, but the little period out of the side seems to have worked as he is now in his best form for Ipswich. Long may it continue.
