Jewell: My Fault, Not Clegg's
Jewell: My Fault, Not Clegg's
Friday, 6th Jan 2012 12:09

Blues boss Paul Jewell has defended Simon Clegg in the wake of the recent criticism aimed at the club's chief executive. The Town manager says he’s the one who should take the blame and the flak for the Blues’ poor on-field performances.

Jewell said: “I think when you’ve been in football all your life, one thing’s for sure, you’re always going to get stick. That’s the way football is.

“We have to hold our hands up, certainly as a management team, and say ‘we’re getting beaten, so people aren’t going to like me at the moment’. At the end of the day we’d like to be liked and the only way to be liked is to win football matches.

“There’s a lot of good work that goes on at Ipswich that Simon does, but the most important thing for people in Ipswich is winning matches on the pitch and it’s not really Simon’s fault that we’re losing matches."

He says that criticism is inevitable when teams are playing badly but that the buck stops with him: “I don’t know what’s been said, but I’m sure he’s had a lot of unfair stick. It’s easy when things are going badly to lash out at someone and it’s normally the manager, and apparently the chief executive’s getting some as well.

“I take full responsibility. If anyone wants to throw any flak, just throw it my way. I don’t like it, but I accept some of it and move on. It’s not as if it’s something I haven’t seen before.”

I recall Jewell saying he would do what is best for Ipswich in or around the Barnsley defeat. So if its all his fault.......?

It sounds like he is asking for another chance. See above sentence.

BillBlue No good living on past glories, life moves on. Enjoy what we all had but don't keep harking back to it.

What's all this heart and soul, mugged and club stolen from us business?

We simply want the team to start winning on the field. Why is there all this concern about how the business is being run. The players make the results on the field. Some on hear keep saying 'we are the laughing stock of English football, where does this come from?

Sounds like PR spin this. Although I do agree that PJ has to take responsibility - he wanted the players, he chose the team and the tactics, he delivered the shocking results, played one up front etc - IMO Clegg is also to blame ... Why: he is the one who has failed to deliever in the transfer market - he negotiated just TWO fees all Summer (Chopra and JET); the rest were contracts for players who no one else wanted. Clegg messed up the pricing strategy for friendly games and also failed to renogotiate contracts not just last season for this as well. I have no doubt that contract negaotiations are completely out of PJ's hands and he should not be blamed for this failing. Also, and crucially, he along with Evans appointed PJ in the first place! The final straw was his 'screw the fans' interview on the BBC the other day - and the fact he is clearly deluded by saying progress has been made and that PJ is doing a good job - when hand on heart even the biggest of PJ fan has had to admit this - so far - is not the case. It would seem Clegg is now authorising articles completely blaming the manager - who earlier this week - he said was doing a great job!

the trouble is , too many people have played football manager on their computer and all of a sudden they are Sir Bob.
my view Paul Jewell ,TEAM and i emphasis here TEAM Manager, buck finishes with him. for now and me, he has the benefit of the doubt. if we get relegated there is no such doubt.

when we defend well, i.e when super sonko plays, we play well and pick up points, so there is not too much wrong with our team, of course those with the emotional maturity of a spoilt 2 year old ( yes most of you who post on here) are not going to see that. If we can bolster our defence during this window i think we will start moving up the league. But this is not championship manager, this is the real world and we cannot always get the players we target, it doesn't mean it's anyone's fault, thats just life.

Does that include half the so-called supporters that can never say anything constructive? If we had a new manager, new CEO and new players (including youth), guess what? You'll still get complaining, ignorant fools

@ pessimistic. I'll certainly be smiling if we win on Saturday, as all supporters will. But we're not talking a few poor matches - it's been 3+ seasons paying to watch sub-standard football. The commonn trait.....Clegg.

So Clegg supports Jewell and Jewell supports Clegg. What a surprise as both will be sacked if this rubbish continues....and it will unfortunately with these clowns in charge. Until ME grows a pair and sends them packing. The only money ME should give to these two is the taxi fare out of suffolk....your fired!!

Bentleybuh1 if he was sat back anymore he would have been horizontal. I think the tv coverage of PJ and Clegg has shown me just how these two feel about our club and basically neither give a toss. I also have to wonder if ME really cares beyond his investment.
Our club is in a mess from the very top and I fear nothing will be done and us supporters will continue to be treated with contempt.
Worrying times!

Well Jewell would say that about the guy who employs him. Anyway, I wish we had some 'Blue Knights' riding in to rescue our club. I'm truly fearing for it under these wannabe sports moguls, one of whom is truly faceless.
