Jewell: Jay Needs to Be More Consistent
Jewell: Jay Needs to Be More Consistent
Wednesday, 28th Dec 2011 09:03

Boss Paul Jewell says summer signing Jay Emmanuel-Thomas needs to add more consistency to his game. The former Arsenal youngster, who was 21 yesterday, has made only seven starts since signing for a fee which ultimately could rise to £2 million.

But Jewell believes there is plenty more to come from the Londoner, who has been a regular sub throughout his time with the Blues: “He’s got the potential to be a really good player but he’s also got the potential to drive you up the wall.

“He’s got something that no one else has got - he’s got that unpredictability. He can stick one in the top corner or just as you’re going to bring him off he’ll stick a great pass through.

“He’s got lots of ability, we just need to nurture that. He’s only 21 and this is the first time he’s been away from Arsenal permanently so, while we wanted to have instant success, as we would with anybody, it doesn’t always work out that way.”

The Town boss says the former England U17 and U19 international needs to be at the top of his game more regularly and not just in short spells in games: “The main thing we’re trying to add to his game is consistency. All young players do go up and down but even consistency within five minutes — he goes from one extreme to another.

“But he has got that ability to get you off your seat, to have you saying ‘what a great goal’ or ‘what a great pass’. He can do things that other players can’t. He’s got that unpredictability. He’s only young and I think if he progresses he will be a very good player.

“He’s 6ft 4in tall, he’s got shoulders like a boxer, he can run but he just needs to learn the game and learn that this a tough league and a tough environment that he’s training in every day.”

His issue for me is the mentality

I really hopes he goes on the be a real star , he is still young as said and like all of us we were not the finished atricle at such a young age. If he did´nt need any work, help, nurturing at such ayoung age he would be at Barcelona now not at Portman road.

Lets give the lad a chance.

have to say, one of our worst performers under Jewell, 90% of the time looks like he doesn't want to be a footballer.

The guy is about as much use as Tamas Priskin playing football.

He has looked in better form than Chopra in the last three weeks when he has got on.

Stats - more crosses per minute than martin, more shots per minute than chopra and has certainly beaten more players than any other midfielder I can think of this season. I feel a lot of Ipswich fans are showing unfair impatience due to the fact he looks slightly heavy on his feet at time.

lets be honest here, the guy never looks really interested, i'm sure he views it as bit of a come down playing for us, good player no doubt, but doesn't really want to play for us, but thats just my opinion

Jet is without doubt the worst player seen at Portman Rd for many years oh yes along with a dozen others

A big disappointment so far and it could be £1.5M wasted. Perhaps we should all write him off then maybe he'll come good and surprise us. After all, even Lee Martin picked up in the end.

The guy is an investment, people want us to be buying promising youngsters but when they don't set the place alight within four months then they go down as bad signings?

He has shown glimpses of what he can do, the nutmeg and cross for Chopra's goal vs Doncaster probably the best. But as PJ is saying he just needs to do it more often.

Has undoubted talents, a bit of a lazy style, he's not alone !

I just wonder the size of his wage packet, if he were payed according to the time he actually uses those talents ?

I doubt he's on much to be honest, he's only 21 and been playing in Arsenal's reserves all his career.

PJ can't win can he? Experienced players is wrong. Promising youngsters is wrong. Jeez.

This guy could be a top rate player as PJ says. He needs games and he needs to be more consistent and more involved in the game. I am sure he will prove to be a big hit at PR given time. Remember Rinaldo when he arrived at Man Utd, he was all over the place in terms of consistency. We have to be patient with these young players, as the team gains confidence so will individuals, especially the younger ones.

Hope I'm wrong about him, but it's quite frustrating to watch him. He seems too languid. Easy life. Languid. May think he's as good as Balotelli. Would never have made the 1st team at Arsenal, but has brought an Arsenal attitude with him. The thing I used to like about Danny Haynes was he kept bouncing back and scaring the opposition with his pace, not letting his many mistakes get to him (like not controlling the ball when passed to him). JET would deny he makes any mistakes. Can see JET has an ego. Should have an attitude of wanting to learn, and knowing that Championship is a still a good standard where you have to work hard for your team mates and with your team mates. If he can't do these things, it's the manager's fault for bringing him here. Having said all that, he is here, and he needs to make this career move work for him. He is not the finished article, but the brain that needs to take that information in is his own brain, not those of his team mates. Needs to get the crowd on his side with lung-bursting runs with the ball, keeping his head up and knowing where his team mates are, and scoring 1 goal every 2 games. Hard to do that when not regularly in the team, but if on as sub needs to score and force his way into the first 11.

Nothing a good kick up the @rse wont sort out. Go on PJ, warm your @rse kicking foot up, and do a Cantona on him!

Now thats entertainment I'd like to see on match day at Portman road!

6ft 4, shoulders like a boxer, why on earth doesnt PJ play him center mid? JET would absolutely run riot and dictate play, he has it in his locker to score, can deliver a killer pass and would win everthing ariel in the middle of the park!

Punchless

Despite being well over 6' rather surprisingly JET does not win many balls in the air. His first touch isn't up to the key role of playing in the centre of mid-field.

I am a supporter of JET and hope with plenty of mentoring from the coaching staff both of these aspects of his game will improve.
