Collins Not Ruling Out Championship Return
Collins Not Ruling Out Championship Return
Friday, 16th Dec 2011 15:32

On-loan Town defender Danny Collins has refused to rule out a move to a Championship club next month. Collins’s temporary stint at Portman Road is due to end after Saturday’s home clash with Derby and he will report back to Stoke for training on Monday.

But the 31-year-old Welsh international, who has contributed three goals in 15 appearances for Paul Jewell’s side, does not expect to remain at the Britannia Stadium beyond next month.

His contract may run until the summer of 2013 but Collins admitted: “I expect to move on and will be looking to get away in January.”

Jewell is keen to sign Collins on a permanent basis and despite interest from Wolves the player did nothing to discourage Town from making him an offer.

He added: “I’m never going to say no. The Premier League is not the be-all and end-all. Of course I would consider offers from Championship clubs.

“The offer would have to be right but what matters most is being happy where you are and with how things are going.”

Collins has made 57 appearances for Stoke since a £2.75 million from Sunderland in August 2009 but has reached a stage in his career where he clearly feels a move would be of benefit.

He said: “I will go back to Stoke after the game on Saturday and see what happens. I have spoken with my agent and hopefully other clubs will show an interest.

“Before the window opens you get clubs looking at which departments they want to improve and it all depends on which clubs contact my agent.”

Collins is keen to depart on a winning note and believes Town’s blistering second-half show at Barnsley will act as a real fillip going into the visit from a Derby side who suffered five straight defeats before recording a draw and a win in their most recent outings.

He added: “The Championship is incredibly tight and after the win at Barnsley it would be nice to follow it up with another and to get two or three on the bounce. There’s no question that last week’s win has been terrific for confidence.”

I agree. Saying: "Hopefully other clubs will show an interest" to me means that he would prefer to stay up north than play for Town. I don't blame him, its time for Jewell to look for a younger CB who can play for us for years.

reading between the lines sounds like he may have other options or want other options, hopefully Delaney can find some form with Sonko still going to be short as I doubt Ivar will do too many games.
Need a solid Defender in January and really needs to be permanent if possible

I don't think Delaney is as bad as some think.

Unlike some comments, I think Collins is being refreshingly frank rather than uttering the usual platitudes. What he is saying is that as a professional he's looking to get the most suitable deal for himself. More clubs interested means more competition for his services and gives him greater choices. He is only doing what any other intelligent person would and does do. He has played well for us and been professional throughout. Like it or not, his first loyalty is rightly to his family and himself. He will balance the financial, the geographical, and other salient factors and decide what he believes is the best for him. We can only hope, if we want him, we can make an offer which seems attractive.

Pity, but I don't think we'll see him again in an ITFC shirt. Reading between the lines, he'll go with the best money offer, and preferably up north. I hope PJ can replace him, because I don't have confidence in Delaney or Smith.

I'm sorry Garv, but Delaney isn't good enough. His distribution is poor, he gets beaten too often in the air and he's too one sided, in my opinion. I'm thinking back to... Coventry this season (I think) as an example. We kept a clean sheet and had a decent game after coming on as a sub, but I remember that he had the man who Collins had been marking up until that point. Suddenly, their guy was winning almost every ball. Just a little difference in quality, but over a season it adds up. However, as a back-up he's a reasonable player, aside from his wages. Be interesting to see who we can get in as a replacement for Collins though. Any suggestions?

Assuming he doesn't sign for us what is the collective wisdom of the various minds on here on who we should be trying to get in to replace him and our other weak areas.
My shout for what its worth.
Goal - Ryhs Taylor
RB Adam Smith
CB Matt Lowton

so he'll be going to somewhere closer to stoke but in the championship then. Derby? Birmingham? Nottingham?

seems to me after all the years i've supported & watched our wonderful club we have now turned into a shop window for other clubs players(loanees) & more to the point our own young players!!!!???? who we sell as soon as we can or don't play them & forget about them, serious questions need answers from the top as to where & what is going on!! the club is (i'm sad to say) turning into a shambles i.e: how many out of contract in the next 6/7 months again!!!.

Basically he will move away from Stoke and not to us. Who would want to join PJ's team - that's the question. Poor results for most of the season and the end of last will have an impact on players wanting to join us and attendances. PJ must now build on last week's second half performances - not just by winning tomorrow but the next 4 or 5 as well. That will make up for the horrendous and embarrassing 7 straight loses.

Reckon he is keeping us sweet just in case he doesnt get another offer to suit. But in fairness tis problem should have been sorted before season started poor management in fairness.

llewej_tuo....out_jewell? I would"ve thought PJ's filmed indiscretions indicate he does indeed favour the ladies. Do you know otherwise or are you another knee-jerker?

Clearly no concrete offers on the table so he's hedging his bets.Don't get too excited.

Jason 0999 - being totally honest the only players that are likely to want to come here are:- more of the 'final contract players' (dads army) OR 'keen up and coming youngsters' from lower divisions - with Jewell we know the later is virtually a non existent option.
