Jewell Not Ruling Out Late Additions
Jewell Not Ruling Out Late Additions

Blues boss Paul Jewell wasn’t ruling out adding to his squad before Thursday’s 5pm loan deadline after Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at Nottingham Forest. The Town manager was left frustrated by his side’s inability to hold on to their 2-1 lead after what he felt was an improved performance.

Jewell, who has watched a number of young players in the lower leagues in recent months, says he’s always looking to add to his squad, regardless of any impending deadlines: “I think we’re always looking to improve whether the deadline day is Thursday or January or yesterday or the day before.

“We’re always making enquiries to try and see if we can get people that might be available to try and improve the squad.”

Despite the loss, he says Saturday’s display was an improvement on those against Millwall and Doncaster: “I thought we did quite well. We had our system, they had their system. We were missing Keith Andrews, which was a blow for us, and Sonko.

“But I thought for long periods we did OK against Forest, however, at vital times in games we haven’t got that belief in ourselves that we can see out matches, like we did against Portsmouth.”

The Town manager feels his side put themselves in trouble too often: “When we come away from home, where the crowd are baying for blood, there’s nothing better than going in the dressing room knowing you’ve quietened them down.

“But we encourage them by playing little balls in the middle of the park that will put us on the back foot.

“Two or three times we played square balls in the middle of the park when we were in complete control of possession and all of a sudden we’ve turned the ball over to the opposition, and that’s what’s costing us.”

Jewell felt that David Stockdale’s error for the first Forest goal was a key moment: “If you go in 1-0 up at half-time it’s a different feel. You give a different team-talk, there’s a different atmosphere in the dressing room, but we gave a goal away right on half-time, which was disappointing.

“But having said that, we got ourselves back in the lead at 2-1 and although Forest were putting the pressure on, I don’t think Stocky’s had that many saves to make.”

On the upside, the Blues boss was pleased to see Danny Collins score two goals from corners, having previously said he is looking for more goals from his centre-halves: “It’s an important part of the game.

“The central defenders go up for every set play and Danny’s got two today, but unfortunately we’ve conceded two from set plays as well.”

True Ipswich supporters have a right to let off steam on any concerns they may have regarding the position Ipswich Club finds it self in? Regardless of their views rightly or wrongly. It would be so boring if we all had the same opinions as to who is in the right or wrong. We all agree that we have a hard task ahead to get our club back where we think we should be in the league. I do not think we have the right players at present, by this i mean a mix of younger fitter players learning from the older more experienced players. Its going to take time ,there is no magic wand to wave to solve our problems. We will have to go with the flown and any changes get them right. Invest in decent younger players. Rebuild with the view of another 2 years getting it right. Involve our Academy some very good players are there now , just waiting for their chance also. COYB

i have often said to my dad what would Joe Royle done with half the money Magilton,Keane and Jewell have spent. i'd wager he would have got us promoted, whether we'd still be there i can't say. this club is slowly going backward's i'm afraid whilst we have a non existant owner.

Tractor Ted - "but who can blame Jewell for going for the safe bet" followed by "We are a team lacking in pace, power, ideas, organisation and spirit*. So having a team "lacking in pace, power, ideas, organisation and spirit" is a safe bet ?

This soums up the muddled thinking behind those who are unable to admit what is blindingly obvious to all. That it is not working. We are not building. No one is talking about 'instant success', accept those trying to bury their heads in the sand by distorting anything that doesn't fit their blinkered view. There is no explanation of how having most of the current first choice players as loanees, or out of contract in June, is building a squad.

Though I will agree with Tractor Fred on one point. After 4 years of Marcus Evans, " Most of the first team would have struggled to get in the reserves in previous seasons". How many of them on Sat were Jewell signings ? Why, if we are building for the future, is Jewell bringing in players who would have struggled to get into the reserves ? We are patching up a very poor squad. Lose one or two key players and the patching comes apart.

That is not building, that is bodging.

we're almost as bad now as the Duncan day's of the late 80's

Unfortunately PJ has brought in far too many players that fall into 3 main categories.

1) Too old/injury prone
2) Just not good enough
3) Have personal problems

And I think we all agreed, no-one is happy with what is happening down at PR. Lets give youth a chance. O'connor, Hyam are two examples. At least Hyam will put some tackles in Midfield & O'Connor could link up brilliantly with Cressy...why can't PJ see that?

A few good dual's on here, if only our midfield could do as well.

Harry the safe bet refers to the not gambling on 'youth and hunger' as so many label it who could turn out to be no good at all!

Garv - thanks I think you got the point of my post. Apologies Larry10 if my post was unclear. My point was that the club we love is now represented by a woeful team built by a manager who went for, probably in his view, the 'safe bet' of experience rather than take the risker option of youth etc. My choice, Barry10, would be youth hunger and alike but if that failed how many would be crying that every team needs old heads! Yes, the solution is a good blend and mixture but with a club that was prepared to spend money the draw of 'name' players was too great for the manager, not saying he was right, clearly he wasnt! I personally hate watching journeymen players sliding from one club to another, coming to our club for a few easy bucks.
So Garry10 I would love to see a squad built with the next 4 seasons in mind, mixture of young and good hungry experienced pros, I just dont think that is the direction the club will take, again this is disappointing, as the report of more loan signings would suggest.
