Jewell Not Ruling Out Late Additions
Jewell Not Ruling Out Late Additions
Monday, 21st Nov 2011 08:30

Blues boss Paul Jewell wasn’t ruling out adding to his squad before Thursday’s 5pm loan deadline after Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at Nottingham Forest. The Town manager was left frustrated by his side’s inability to hold on to their 2-1 lead after what he felt was an improved performance.

Jewell, who has watched a number of young players in the lower leagues in recent months, says he’s always looking to add to his squad, regardless of any impending deadlines: “I think we’re always looking to improve whether the deadline day is Thursday or January or yesterday or the day before.

“We’re always making enquiries to try and see if we can get people that might be available to try and improve the squad.”

Despite the loss, he says Saturday’s display was an improvement on those against Millwall and Doncaster: “I thought we did quite well. We had our system, they had their system. We were missing Keith Andrews, which was a blow for us, and Sonko.

“But I thought for long periods we did OK against Forest, however, at vital times in games we haven’t got that belief in ourselves that we can see out matches, like we did against Portsmouth.”

The Town manager feels his side put themselves in trouble too often: “When we come away from home, where the crowd are baying for blood, there’s nothing better than going in the dressing room knowing you’ve quietened them down.

“But we encourage them by playing little balls in the middle of the park that will put us on the back foot.

“Two or three times we played square balls in the middle of the park when we were in complete control of possession and all of a sudden we’ve turned the ball over to the opposition, and that’s what’s costing us.”

Jewell felt that David Stockdale’s error for the first Forest goal was a key moment: “If you go in 1-0 up at half-time it’s a different feel. You give a different team-talk, there’s a different atmosphere in the dressing room, but we gave a goal away right on half-time, which was disappointing.

“But having said that, we got ourselves back in the lead at 2-1 and although Forest were putting the pressure on, I don’t think Stocky’s had that many saves to make.”

On the upside, the Blues boss was pleased to see Danny Collins score two goals from corners, having previously said he is looking for more goals from his centre-halves: “It’s an important part of the game.

“The central defenders go up for every set play and Danny’s got two today, but unfortunately we’ve conceded two from set plays as well.”

I agree suffolkpunch. I suggest some (a lot) of people on here would be better suited to supporting a rich prem club.

Some fresh younger legs would be a good start and an experienced quality keeper (I know that would be hard to come by) but hasn't Jewell said that he wants a keeper for the future, so a younger player. That's the one thing i completely disagree on and I'm firmly behind Jewell and still think he'll get it right, but I really do feel your number one keeper has to be late 20's at least to have the experience. Look at the number of keepers who are still going even at 40! I've often felt that some of Stockdales decisions have been a bit questionable.

As opposed to a rich championship club, that after 5 years of investment has not got close to the play-off's. ITFC is in desprate needs of a internal resuffle.

Still ,if ME wants to keep hemorrhaging his money, thats up to him.

It's obvious that without Sonko, we struggle. We urgently need to pay whatever it takes to get solid defenders in, the midfield and strike force we have are good enough.

I would rather we wait until January and then buy a decent Centre Half who can Captain the team and doesn't spend 75% of the time injured and a pacey Winger to complement Carson. Loans are only a short term fix.

Also if Leadbitter isn't going to sign lets move him on and bring in an energetic central midfielder that can actually spot a forward pass.

Might be in the minority but I still think PJ will turn it round but he does need time.

Thats it waste yet more money on under committed loanees.
Try working with what you have on the training pitch instead of throwing money at the problems you have created.
Jewell Out

There seems to be one over riding factor in all this, the continued way the club is being run.We are told that ME has the premier in sight but we seem to be at a stand still, and contine to be run by Mr Clegg who has no passion for football and only runs the club as an accountant would.Selling young players and buying over the hill players on short term contracts.Ok Cresswell seems to be one good buy and some the loan players

Short square balls in the middle of the park is what your captain is all about PJ, & if your not astute enough to see that you need to make way for someone who is.

Leadbitter is the skipper.. Why does he NEVER publically come out and make statements? He may possibly be a great captain on the training and in the dressing room but he is a mute on the football pitch and has no relationship at all with the supporters? Questions need to be asked PJ!!

I really hope we do make a signing this week, someone young on loan with a view to a permanent move please, just to lift the spirits of the fans and the team.

There is no point calling for Jewell's head, as who could do a better job on such a limited budget after taking over a team 19th in the league with a virtually worthless squad? McAuley, Norris and Wickham all left in the summer, outside the manager's control, and Jewell has spent just £3M on transfer fees. Perhaps freebies and loans can only take us so far? Jewell realises this and wants to bring in young hungry players, so hope we sign a few this week or in January!

Good question. Apparently he did an interview on BBC Radio Suffolk and could hardly string three or four words together, a bit like one might expect from a young child. I also don't see Leadbitter being vocal on the pitch and his performances certainly don't lead by example. How on earth is he captain?

We need two new signings. We need a new Chief Execuative (I cannot fully explain my feelings towards Simon Clegg on a family website) and a new manager (Jewell is rapidly losing it and we need to act now).
It is unacceptable for a club like ours to launch from false dawn to failure and back again in a never ending cycle that sees us finish season after season in mid table (I fear in could be a lot worse than that this year).

Just the sort of experience we are lacking.

People saying Jewell out need to be realistic. You cant walk your way out of this league anymore like you could 5 to 10 years ago. Theres about 15 to 20 teams who are aiming for promotion. Success takes time and patience, and sadly there's too many fans that expect to get promoted straight away. No matter what manager you have, they'll need at least 3 years to produce a good team. Keep the faith in Jewell! COYB!

Jon 456 he has wasted one year buying players who will be to old next season. No progress yet.

I believe this may have been mentioned before (by me)....we are an average team, with average players...we are sitting in mid table because thats were we belong. We have been in this division for ten years now and for most of those years have not come particularly close to getting back to the prem....i dont know what the solution is aside from a huge money injection or major investment in the player development policy which will take up to 5 years to come to fruition... as town fans we ARE going to have to remain patient and realise that we are not going to be able to compete consistently at the top level of this division for some time....alternatively we could get relegated to league one and bounce straight back and storm the championship the following season with winning momentum! seems to work for Nodge and Southampton!!....

This is just smoke and mirrors again. A new loanee for Christmas might be welcomed by some but for me the exercise is probably a waste of time and just gives out the impression of desperation. Not that we aren't desperate but the chances of loaning any player that might do us a modicum of good is extremely remote. PJ has used this line to death now. Instead of promising new players that at best will be short term additions he should be concentrating his energies on ensuring that the players we already have produce acceptable levels of performance both individually and as a team

he is incapable of getting the best out of players therefore he should be fired and replaced with Jack Charlton

Jon456, I and I suspect many others on here dont expect us to walk out of this league and I am prepared to wait, whats another couple of years after the last few.
What I cannot put up with is the constant waste of money, okay fees havent been excessive but what we dont see is the wage bill for the likes of Sonko, Collins, Bullard, Ellington.......
We need to invest more in the future..Cresswell a good example.
Why does PJ continue to ignore O,Connor, Murray, Hyam...???
I think many of us could accept erratic performances with youngsters that are being persevered with. Why on earth Ellington was brought to this club I will never know and dont get me started on Bullard either...he is not interested now he has trousered another mega deal.
Sort it out or Ship Out PJ>

I agree some of the signings we've made have been poor such as ingimarsson, however, the only money he has spent on transfer fees, has been 1 million for chopra, roughly 1 million for Jet, and 200 odd thousand for cresswell, all with many years ahead of them, which, as long as jet improves which i think he will within the next year, it was money well spent. however i do agree some of the older signings like bowyer, ingimarsson and ellington is just a waste of the wage bill.
