Jewell: We Concede When We Come Under Pressure
Jewell: We Concede When We Come Under Pressure
Saturday, 19th Nov 2011 17:56

Blues boss Paul Jewell was again left ruing his side’s tendency to give away goals when they come under pressure at vital times as Town conceded two in the final six minutes as they lost 3-2 at Nottingham Forest.

Jewell said: “It’s a bit of a sickener. I thought it was a good game. I thought there was plenty of effort and endeavour.

“I think that at vital times in games, and I’ve said it before, when we come under pressure we concede goals.”

The Town manager says his players were again guilty of making unforced mistakes: “Individual errors - the first goal is definitely the keeper’s fault and that’s right on half-time, a vital time in the game. The second one is someone not marking the man they were told to, although it was a good ball in.

“But Steve Cotterill will be saying the same thing about our goals - four set plays. In the end you need that little bit of luck, a deflection off Grant’s head has fallen right for their player. So, once again it’s a big disappointment for us.”

Jewell felt his side deserved more from the match: “It’s always frustrating but I think we came here and played quite well for periods of time. It was a game between two evenly matched sides, I thought. They were at home and the onus is on them.

“Again we’ve got ourselves in two winning positions and at vital times in the game we’ve given silly goals away.

“I thought we matched them all over the pitch at times and it’s still not an easy place to come, Nottingham Forest.”

He admits that the Blues’ form won’t improve until they stop giving away poor goals: “It doesn’t matter which way you dress it up, we concede goals and that’s not just the goalkeeper and the back four, that’s a whole team thing.

“I think we had the first corner of the game after about an hour, so it wasn’t a game of loads of chances, our keeper hasn’t had anything to do really. It was a game of two honest teams trying to win the game but not one with a plethora of chances.”

Jewell says midfielder Keith Andrews will be back for the Blues’ home game against Reading having undergone surgery on his broken nose: “He had an operation on Thursday morning and hopefully he’ll be back next week.”

Forest boss Steve Cotterill thought his side deserved the win: “What a fantastic advert for the Championship. Everybody was entertained today, that’s for sure.

"I think it was a game we deserved to win, it doesn’t matter about the two late goals.

“I think that showed their team spirit, their togetherness, their belief, I thought they worked extremely hard today and I felt it was a game they deserved to win.”

We seem to have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory! Surely there is enough experience in the team,i.e. international players-to see out the game at 2-1 with 10 mins remaining.Getting really depressed about the state of our club.

Loanee's Andrews,Collins and Stockdale will soon be gone.
A year in charge so what has Jewell brought in? Bullard and Cresswell good signings but Bowyer,Sonko,Ingarmarson. All over 30 and injury prone.Drury who ?
In the meantime we have lost Norris,Wickham,Macauley and Walters shortly before and what have we done with the money for Wickham?
Jewell please go back to Sky as you have NOT built a good future Ipswich team.We need a good young manager with a view to youth, pace backed with some experience not a manager whose vision is to bring in a load of old blokes taking it in turns to have a game after a bout of deep heat treatment.!!
And lets not forget Clegg's responsibility in all this.
I love ITFC and have done since i saw them play Real Madrid at Portman Road but it makes me sad and frustrated to see how crap things are at the moment.
Don't get me started on Lead boots being captain!

Comparing places and points to this time last season is beyond stupid. Look where Keane took us!

I am not a.PJ lover. I will support my team and the person who manages the team. However, what is worrying is that after losing 4 on the bounce where our next points will come from with reading up next then burnley away.

There is a lack of Passion on the pitch and to be honest the terraces as well. When keane was sacked there was an opportunity to really take the team and club forward. That hasn't happened and at the moment its hard to see jewell doing that. We have no pace or variety in the current team and just don't create enough. Next 4 games are huge. Low haul of points will see crowds dwindle again with Collins and Andrews not staying and that is a huge worry.

Where is oconnor and given keane always said Murray was the best finisher at the club why hasn't he played. And where is hyam? Young players not given a chance.

The team need our support next week but a year on and we are no further forward. What will happen if we lose the next two? And if we were to lose the current manager who would people want ?

Churchmans reveals he is only a fan when the going's good, well done you.

H32 it is stupid because you can say Keane had us in a better position this time last year but look where we were when he left? Since Jewell has taken over we have improved (factually, in results and if you are smart enough to see it, performances on the pitch-wise as well.)

I'm not going to come here and state that everything is rosy but some comments on here are deluded and pathetic.

I expected jas to claim that Keane wasn't that bad, he just can't help himself. jas, it was clearly Keane that caused the drop i attendences, mainly because of his terible style of football (which you don't seem to have ever noticed, which beggars belief frankly). Jewell's team are waynmore entertaining to watch. The issue at the moment is letting in soft goals, the rest of the tea isn't that far away (only a few games ago we were playing great stuff and everyone was expecting a promoton charge, what short memories some have).

As for h32, +i seem to recall you were a Keane spologist as well. So it seems that those in favour of our worst ever manager (it's clearly Keane, not Duncan) are the ones most voiciferous against Jewell. Makes no real sense to me but there you go.

Clearly things are worrying at the moment, but we gave a much much worse mamager twice as long as Jewell has had so I think it onlyfair that we do at least the same for Jewell.

naa, thank you.

Jewell out - according to your stats if we win our next two games we'll have more points than last year.

It's all very well to hark on about Derby and forget Wigan. It's all very well to go on about the losses and forget the wins. We completely outplayed West Ham earlier this season. This side has got all the makings of a great team. It needs time.

All the most consistatly successful sides have consistant faith in their managers, through good and bad. I'm not saying things are good, they just really aren't That bad.

Only difference I see between Keane and Jewell pts wise is that we had more draws under Keane - the win/loss ratio isn't much different. I'd give Jewell until the New Year to get some fresh blood in and replace some of the no hopers (and there are a few) if we're in a similar position say March time then he has to go. I think he's made mistakes with some of the players he's bought in and his inability tactics wise.

naa - just a bit of advice - CHECK YOUR FACTS.

h32 added 20:21 - Nov 21
Garv - plainly obvious to all that you only see what you want to see - the rest is totally oblivious to you, for some crazy reason.
You're not Jewell's long lost relation by any chance ......... are you ?

tomisamos added 20:54 - Nov 21
For the record, I also agree with Garv. I don't see what's so blindingly more obvious about your opinion anyway. But then I'm another person who seemingly get's their facts wrong...

Garv added 02:48 - Nov 22
Its not oblivious. I can see things aren't all rosy right now but please, sacking our manager in this situation is a plain silly.

h32: what facts? I didn't state any. I simply gave my opinion. If it's to do with you being a Keane apologist then I think if you actually read what I wrote then I said "I seem to recall" which is quite clear in that I'm not stating it as a fact.

So I have absolutely no idea what you are actually complaining about.

How about you make a nice big anti-Jewell banner, bring it to the game, and see how sour an atmosphere you can create at the ground aswell. The media will catch on and he'll go quickly. Then we can get a new manager, give him 10 months, realise he also hasn't made any progress, sack him, and wait until we bring Sir Alex out of retirement in 10 years time or Sir Bobby back from the dead.

Success isn't instant. It sometimes takes longer than a season. If a team with the money and quality of Chelsea can't bring instant success through chopping and changing managers I don't see how we can. What harm will it do to give Jewell the season?

h32, if you really weren't one of those defending Keane then fair enough, I obviously did recall incorrectly.

I still think it's ridiculous to want Jewell out. At the end of last season everyone was happy with the progress made under Jewell. He got points on the board and got us playing a far more attractive style of football.

In the summer he made a lot of purchases, it was never going to be that all of them would work, but he signed some good players in that crop.

The season started poorly defensively but then we had a great run and played some excellent stuff against some of the top teams in the division. Then we started leaking goals again. But basically it seems to me that people are judging his failure and the reason to get him sacked on a total of about 10 games.

You do realise how ridiculous that is don't you?

Sure, you can explain the mistakes and go into detail why they were poor choices etc etc but it still amounts to about 10 games. Crikey, give the guy a fair chance.
