Monday, 17th Oct 2011 13:36

The First Division championship medal won by Town full-back John Compton in 1961/62 is to under the hammer at Sotherby’s next month. Compton played in 41 of the 42 games as Sir Alf Ramsey’s side carried off the club’s one and only league title.

Poplar-born Compton was with the Blues between 1960 and 1964, making 131 appearances without scoring a goal. He also played for Chelsea and Bournemouth.

The 9ct gold medal is expected to fetch £4,000 - £5,000 at the auction on November 7th and 8th. More details here.

Meanwhile, Compton’s team-mates Ray Crawford and Ted Phillips will be signing copies of Ipswich Town: Champions 1961/62 from 5pm in Planet Blue prior to Tuesday’s game against Portsmouth.

I had a long chat with John the night before a Legends day at ITFC about 8 years ago at the Hotel bar, such a nice man with great stories about his playing days. I'd had a few beers and it took me about an hour to recognise Micky Stockwell sitting next to him. Hope he gets good money for it, he deserves it.

It would be good if ME bought it on behalf of the club (must be tax deductable?) and displays it - perhaps in the boardroom or main reception.

I know I shouldn't get morbid & depressed and say 'You must understand that football was much better in that 1961/62 season'. It seems such a shame 'cause I wonder just how many of those members of whichever club side wins the Premier League title this year will have to sell their winners medal. Those two men doing the book signing ARE club legends not like the 'riff-raff' we've got today. Sorry. Rant over !!!

The medal is under the hammer? Are they trying to break the medal or something?

This is a rather sad story. John was a major contributer to our championship campaign and adapted well from left wing half to left full back. As others have suggested it would be great if his medal could be purchased and added to the club's "museum".
