Jewell Delighted With Win
Jewell Delighted With Win
Monday, 19th Sep 2011 22:53

Town boss Paul Jewell was delighted with his side’s 3-0 victory against Coventry but felt they ought to have been out of sight at the break.

Jewell said: “It’s nice to win and the way we created opportunities in the first half the game could have been over at half-time. It was lovely to get three points and put on a decent attacking performance for our supporters.

“Goals change games. If they’d have scored first the boot could have been on the other foot. In the Blackpool game there was nothing in it in the first half and if we’d have scored first, that might have been different.

“That’s what football does to you. Goals change games and people’s perceptions. Players all of a sudden get an extra stride and a spring in their step.

“It’s all about building confidence. We’re not getting carried away but I thought it was a good performance.”

The Blues boss believes the display was a sign of things to come: “We’ve got a lot of new players, it’s not going to happen overnight but I think tonight showed what we are capable of.

“I thought the players showed a lot of character and from the first whistle we closed them down, passed the ball well and created opportunities. We haven’t done that in any of the games we’ve played really.

“Even when we beat Bristol City, I don’t think we created more than four opportunities, so it was nice to see us pass the ball and move it and have the third man running. It was nice but we should have been out of sight at half-time.”

Jewell, who said centre-half Ibrahima Sonko went off with tweaked knee ligaments and is a doubt for Saturday's game at Middlesbrough, felt Coventry were given a few too many opportunities but was more than happy with his side's attacking play: “It was an open game. It could have been 7-3 or something like that.

“From my point of view, we were great going forward but defensively I thought there were too many crosses going into our box and too many headers being allowed.

“But you’re always looking to strive to get better. We don’t get too carried away with results when we win and it’s not the end of the world when we lose, although it does feel like it for a bit.”

Full-back Aaron Cresswell was praised for his exploits at both ends of the pitch: “I’m glad the tribunal was last week and not this! He’s done well. He’s got huge potential. He put some lovely balls in and got some headers off the line.”

Jewell revealed that Czech U21 international keeper Marek Stech, who was on trial last week, has returned to his club: “He’s gone back to West Ham and we’re going to monitor the situation.”

Coventry boss Andy Thorn gave an honest assessment of the game and was clearly impressed by the Blues: “We never got going. For 20 minutes we were still in the dressing room and against good, experienced players you can’t do that.

“Fair play to them, I thought they played really well during that period and we gave ourselves a mountain to climb after that.

“They’re probably the best team we’ve played this season on that performance, but having said that that was our worst performance, but take nothing away from them.

“It was a poor evening for us, we never got going and there’s no point in trying to say any different because you boys watched it as well. It’s frustrating for us because we know we’re a lot better than that.”

I watched it on telly last night and I have to say that was the best I have seen them play for years.

I do not apologise for not going to PR as I now live 80 miles away and still have to go to work.

Everything has already been said about Cressy. The boy is pure class.

I hope Sonko recovers quickly. He made us look really solid at the back.

The loan window opens tomorrow. Have you any more rumours Phil?

pmason, you're right. But then again, I don't remember Keane signing many players with the ability of Bullard, Cresswell, Chopra, Stockdale, JET, Sonko, Collins and the like and he certainly couldn't get the best out of players like Scotland. So perhaps you could reserve ALL of your judgements until Jewell has had sufficient time to rebuild a side which Keane largely destroyed, thanks.

Pmason, it's true one swallow don't make a summer, and only one game, but to quote your words, only a mug could fail to see there is real progress being made, slowly but surely we are moving up the table, everyone is entitled to an opinion, but try to incorporate some facts ie:- 3 scored none conceded a good performance and we could have had seven. I base my opinions on facts , COYB

What kind of a post is that pmason!? Keane only took charge of another 2 games post the Leicester one as he was sacked 2 weeks or so after!

So the question, 'did it turn things around?' is a nonsense one.

I'd be happy with 2 points and 2 decent performances from our next 2 away games and then 3 points from the Brighton game. We achieve that and we will have turned a corner but taking anything away from last night's performance as it was a very decent one.

Great team performance and a vitally important result. The defence is on the mend and Aaron Creswell stole ths show with a magnificent display!

Also thought Sonko and Collins looked very stable at the back. Hope that injury is not serious?

Great performance.

I have to admit to not being a Scotland fan in the past, but his performance last night was outstanding. Obviously he's off the pies!

He and Chopra combined very effectively and there could be competition for the first to 20 goals - unless Andrews beats them both there. Great to see a midfielder getting into the oppositions 6 yard box

pmason and bromfield..are you familiar with the expression "savouring the moment" or perhaps you don't want to? Even h32 is.
Again, well done PJ and lads!!

Decent showing from the team last night, things appear to be slowly coming together as expected with the players that PJ has brought in.
h32 has given his verdict but surprised we haven't heard anything from the other Chuckle brother.

pmason, rather than draw negatives, didn't you enjoy the Town passing the ball on the deck and creating chances, havn't seen that from us in whilst. Yes Coventry may not be the best team in the league but we actually played football I think this is a step in the right direction. Not sure why people are knocking Edwards, thought he had his best game in a blue shirt, just wish he would occasionally try and take it past the full back like Cresswell was doing on teh other flank.

I'm not a knocker or a moaner in general but i think the test will be on saturday,After our start to the season to go to 'borough and get a point will be excellent but if we lose it's not the end of the world as long as we play aswell if not better than last night,I said last night that 4 points from our next 4 games is ,imo, acceptable considering the opposition.Idiots like pmason,h32 ect wont understand this but rebuilding like we are we have to take and accept the rough with the smooth.

There will hardly be any if any games this season where we were allowed so much time on the ball so in many ways coventry made us look good

Watched the game on TV and was really pleased with the result and thought there were loads of positives to be taken.

However bad Coventry were I still got very concerned every time they got the ball into the box. This was made even worse when Sonko went off. A better team would have finished at least two of their chances so I think we were slightly fortunate.

Having said all that, there was much improvement and finally some decent football played.

Well done to all.

Firstly well done to all concerned for last night - really enjoyed it. Great football and for once an attacking formation with two up front. PJ deserves credit.

But if the PJ lovers think this means 'all is forgiven' you must be deluded. Sorry, but we lost 8 of our last 11 before Coventry (who are a poor side) and as attendances are showing, people were not happy! You can kid yourselves as much as you like, but this is the first time since PJ took over (8 months ago) that we have really performed to a level that warrants credit. Don't get me wrong, we were EXCELLENT last night - but this does not forgive the past showings or indeed suggest that PJ is as good as some of you have been saying!

I really hope PJ keeps this up. As a fan of ITFC I want to see us play well and win. But attendances are dropping and it's not because people think PJ has been doing a great job. As people regularly said when Roy or Jim won - 'one swallow does not make a Summer' - therefore some of you need to practice what you used to preach. Let's see how we do over the next 4 or 5 games bafore suggesting all is forgiven.

In the meantime well done to all - including PJ for a very enjoyable evening.

Not taken long for the abusive, over excitable brigade to run riot after one win - these people are a disgrace because in their little world no one else can have an opinion - and being honest and respectful of others is something that they were obviously never taught. The few always spoil for the majority.
They know who they are.

Thankfully there are others who are different - and it's a pleasure to read their posts, even if I do not necessarily agree with them.

jas0999 I like your post on the one hand, because it's balanced but unconvinced, that's probably the most sense that's come out of anyone calling for Jewell out still (or hinting at it). However:

Jewells Ipswich run: played 32, won 14, drawn 4, lost 14 - winning 43% of games (same sort of rate as he had at wigan).
Roy Keane's run: played 81, won 28, drawn 25, lost 28 - winning 34 % of games.

To me that looks like progress. I don't think people are bashing you, h32 or pmason because you're saying Jewell isn't doing what he should and because you're frustrated that we're not in the top three yet, but its still early days. How can we say we had better players this time last year?

IF we don't beat Middlesborough and West Ham does this mean we've failed? Even though they have far more settled squads and are high flying on confidence?

It's not a game of Fifa, these players need confidence in themselves and our new players (who have only been here for about a month at the most for a lot of them!!) need time to gel. It's not like we're on the verge of relegation is it?! I'm glad we made the most of playing a team we're better than, I'm sure it gave the players a boost. Unhappy fans boycotting and complaining and personally insulting each other isn't going to help.

I know it costs a lot to go to football, I don't get to go often, but it's not even the lack of attendance. There was only about one or two people singing yesterday and we were playing the best football we've seen in ages. It isn't the numbers, it's the complete lack of atmosphere and support, through good or bad. We could be fans of a lot worse, for goodness sake!

I'm not getting carried away with the result, yeah ok the first 25-30 minutes is the best we have played this season and we could have been out of site but it is Coventry we were playing not West Ham. Again disappointed what we do when we haven't got the ball, they got into the last third far too easily and the amount of headers they won from corners and crosses was ridiculous and a better team would have scored at least a couple. Not sure about Bullard playing holding midfield, Bowyer still looks off the pace but Cresswell had another cracker! Be interesting to see how we get on against Boro who are flying but I'm not expecting anything.

pmason - How clever you are to quote Eric Cantona. But do you know what it means?? . . . I thought not.

I, as I feel sure many others do, do not see this as the definitive turning point in ITFCs season. However, you have to admit that was the best performance that town have given in at least the last 3 years. Passing through midfield as opposed to the big hoof upfield. I thought it was beautiful to watch.

The commentators on Sky remarked before the game kicked off, that this was a battle between a team of young enthusiastic players and a team of experienced players. It would be interesting to see who would come out on top. Well we all saw who that was.

One other point. Some people on this site have belittled Coventry implying that they are a poor team. How many teams have beaten Derby this season? Where are Derby in the league? Take a bit more care before you slag ITFC off!!

H32 i like the fact that you post win or loose and are not afraid to say well done when team does well and vent your frustration when we do badly ... there are however one or two on here who find a negative in everything, wouldnt mind but these same people totally slated anyone that had a bad word to say about Keane and were still backing him till the bitter end ..... A balanced view is having an opinion whilst respecting the view of others, and like you is something i respect, i just find it hard to support people who are hypocritical (you are not one of them!)
