Jewell Delighted With Win
Jewell Delighted With Win
Monday, 19th Sep 2011 22:53

Town boss Paul Jewell was delighted with his side’s 3-0 victory against Coventry but felt they ought to have been out of sight at the break.

Jewell said: “It’s nice to win and the way we created opportunities in the first half the game could have been over at half-time. It was lovely to get three points and put on a decent attacking performance for our supporters.

“Goals change games. If they’d have scored first the boot could have been on the other foot. In the Blackpool game there was nothing in it in the first half and if we’d have scored first, that might have been different.

“That’s what football does to you. Goals change games and people’s perceptions. Players all of a sudden get an extra stride and a spring in their step.

“It’s all about building confidence. We’re not getting carried away but I thought it was a good performance.”

The Blues boss believes the display was a sign of things to come: “We’ve got a lot of new players, it’s not going to happen overnight but I think tonight showed what we are capable of.

“I thought the players showed a lot of character and from the first whistle we closed them down, passed the ball well and created opportunities. We haven’t done that in any of the games we’ve played really.

“Even when we beat Bristol City, I don’t think we created more than four opportunities, so it was nice to see us pass the ball and move it and have the third man running. It was nice but we should have been out of sight at half-time.”

Jewell, who said centre-half Ibrahima Sonko went off with tweaked knee ligaments and is a doubt for Saturday's game at Middlesbrough, felt Coventry were given a few too many opportunities but was more than happy with his side's attacking play: “It was an open game. It could have been 7-3 or something like that.

“From my point of view, we were great going forward but defensively I thought there were too many crosses going into our box and too many headers being allowed.

“But you’re always looking to strive to get better. We don’t get too carried away with results when we win and it’s not the end of the world when we lose, although it does feel like it for a bit.”

Full-back Aaron Cresswell was praised for his exploits at both ends of the pitch: “I’m glad the tribunal was last week and not this! He’s done well. He’s got huge potential. He put some lovely balls in and got some headers off the line.”

Jewell revealed that Czech U21 international keeper Marek Stech, who was on trial last week, has returned to his club: “He’s gone back to West Ham and we’re going to monitor the situation.”

Coventry boss Andy Thorn gave an honest assessment of the game and was clearly impressed by the Blues: “We never got going. For 20 minutes we were still in the dressing room and against good, experienced players you can’t do that.

“Fair play to them, I thought they played really well during that period and we gave ourselves a mountain to climb after that.

“They’re probably the best team we’ve played this season on that performance, but having said that that was our worst performance, but take nothing away from them.

“It was a poor evening for us, we never got going and there’s no point in trying to say any different because you boys watched it as well. It’s frustrating for us because we know we’re a lot better than that.”

A good win...could have been 6 or 7! Pleased with Cresswell and
Scotland and the midfield moved the ball around nicely. Hope that
Sonko recovers for Saturday...we were giving up too many headers at
the back after he departed. Bullard and Bowyer are getting fitter and
Leadbitter at last had a good game. Chops needs to find his shooting boots but otherwise worked hard. Andrews knows where the goal is though. We'll face much tougher teams down the road so it's vital to win against the lower teams. Three points out of play-offs now...this morning we were one point off relegation!
Attendance down...much more comfortable to stay home with a beer
and watch it on the telly. At least I hope that's the reason.
Look out Middlesborough!

Very good performance. Not perfect by any means but encouraging. Now need to keep some stability and push on. Next up is probably the toughest fixture of the season.

Good win and a good performance, to a man the whole team played well.

Leadbitter's best game for a long time.

Feet on the ground as some tough fixtures coming up. Time to kick on and build on this performance.

Dissboyitfc - once he shows, if indeed he does, that he is capable of doing the business - then obviously the so called 'knocking' will stop.
At the moment, excluding tonight, it's justified.

I could not believe my eyes tonight. We can play football!!! What I witnessed tonight is a world away from the recent cack that's been served up at Portman Road. Hopefully this is a sign of a team that is gelling, long may it continue!

Every attack they had came down the right they had very litle threat up the middle and cressy and bowyer seemed to control the left.Overall abloody good game and excellent result but i seriously dont expect more than 4 points out of the next 4 games hope im wrong but..all the same after tonight i think we're on the up and up COYB

Great result . looked a bit weak dealing with high balls in the area, but practice makes perfect so they say. Can only get better providing we do not get many injuries. Well done COYB

Edwards again superb, proving critics wrong. Leadbitter's best game for a long while, and Bowyer showed what he is capable of tonight, although not sure this four centre midfielders thing will work against better opposition. Andrews is a star, great goal once again! Two great assists from Chopra, all he needs is a goal now (which he should have got tonight).

Cresswell man of the match, pushed hard by Scotland who was also excellent.

Anyone see Bullard and Andrews battle it out at rock paper scissors to decide who would take the free kick? Genius

Nobody has mentioned Collins. He had a great game. Won everything near him in the air. Thought our defence was good until Sonko had to go off,- then we looked ropey and were a bit lucky.
Cresswell and Scotland were awesome. I've said before, Scotland is a 2nd season man. He took time to get going at Swansea too. He could end up being our 20 goal striker.

Still early days to say we've completely turned a corner, but surely we saw enough signs tonight to convince people that Paul Jewell has what it takes to turn our fortunes around! Some of the football today was league-winning, and if the team continue to gel and play together I'm sure it won't be long until we're at least pushing for the play offs if not more!
Two tough away games next though, this will show how much character the team actually has, let's hope it's good!

Cresswell clearing off the line 3 times and overall, playing like an old head - steal of the century. Know wonder Jewell is thanking his lucky stars the tribunal was last week. The sky's the limit as far as I can see with his undoubted talent. What price now ? - as if we'd take it ! Andrews also, what price now - let's just hope a figure was already agreed. All played well to a man. Well done lads.
P.S. Collins, almost solid !

h32 - why do you bother? Everyone else enjoyed the night, then you turn up with your cynicism. Football really doesn't do you any good!

If I had to focus on a negative aspect of the game it would be Edwards - and the couple of occasions he over complicated things at the back when doing the simple thing like hoofing the ball away into row z or releasing it early to a town shirt would of been simpler. But overall a great result and step-up in performance by the boys.

So many good performances last night and during one spell in the first half we held possession of the ball for longer than I can remember in years! There is vast experience in the side now and once they all get up to full fitness and gel together then we are a decent side.

Last season we had a very good start to the season, but this year we have now scored one more goal than the same stage last year. Of course our defending was poor early on, but bringing in Collins and Sonko has rectified that I think so there is every reason to think we can go onto have a good season.

Well done Paul Jewell and the lads.

stanwayblue- well said about h32... i reckon too many people on here think they know about football, and they know jack s...
anyone who reckons you get a virtually entire new team and they will gel straight from the start are bonkers.
lets not get carried away, its a working progress, but i saw loads of little positives in that game, it was only 3/4 weeks ago we made peterboro look like barcelona, so i reckon thats progress , 3 goals scored none conceded,
i know football is a results business and it should be entertainment too, tonight we had both, so come on get behind the team and support them or go moan about something else...COYB
