Free Coach Travel to Blackpool as Town Say Sorry
Free Coach Travel to Blackpool as Town Say Sorry
Thursday, 25th Aug 2011 07:25

Town chief executive Simon Clegg has revealed that the club will cover fans’ travel costs to the Blues’ next away game at Blackpool as an apology for Saturday’s 7-1 thrashing at Peterborough United. The 546-mile round trip to Bloomfield Road on Saturday 10th September is the longest of the campaign.

Clegg said: “I have decided that the club should carry the costs of the supporters’ coaches for the Blackpool game — however many that will be — as a show of our gratitude to our fans after enduring last weekend’s defeat at Peterborough.

“It says something about the support this club is fortunate to enjoy that a vast majority of the 1,300 fans who made the trip to London Road were still there at the final whistle having endured a humiliating last 60 minutes of the game.

“Speaking to the players and the manager, I know they were personally embarrassed and dejected, but they also felt bitterly disappointed as to how badly they had let our loyal fans down.

“Watching your team lose as well as win is all part of being a football fan and it’s not a decision we have taken lightly, but we feel this one-off gesture is the right one and I know Paul and the players are right behind it as well.”

Manager Paul Jewell added: “We’re all hurting this week, but the people I feel most for are the supporters.

“Every other weekend they make long journeys and pay a lot of money to support us on our travels and we are letting them down. We need to improve; not just for our sake, but most importantly theirs.”

Supporters wanting to take advantage of free coach travel to Blackpool need purchase their match tickets from the club’s Ticket Office prior to midday on Tuesday 6th September.

It's a nice gesture, although I'm not sure how many people will make the trip to Blackpool! I am more pleased with how the club seem to be putting it right with new signings this week.

I think the players should chip in for some refreshments as well.

I heard that Delaney was that upset at last weeks performance that he jumped in front of the team bus, and even that went through his legs!

Whilst we can all moan that this isn't enough, at least its something. Don't think many clubs would do the same.

As Mark states the signing are a better gesture

Thank you Mr Clegg - The loyal bunch (of which I am not one) will support the club whatever and will remain long after those failures that wore the shirt on Saturday have moved on. For the club to make such a gesture shows that they value the fans (or at least their money) and accept that Saturday was not acceptable. Personally I think that the players inovolved should make a similar goodwill gesture - as the ones that let us down seem to be the only ones that are not apologetic for the recent results.

Total joke Mr Clegg, if the last time was anything to go by most fans will make there own way up and stay the weekend and if my memory serves me right only 2 buses travelled that day so it will cost the club a whopping £500 per bus max instead of paying out 1300 fans tickets for last weeks shambles costing £26,000 plus traveling money not to mention the thousands of pounds spent drinking and drowning our sorrows. Your are a waste of space Clegg get out of my club and get out now!!!!

Wow, sounds like he actually realises how bad it was. Nice one Cleggy and whoever else was involved in this decision.

Some will never be happy, but this is a decent gesture by the club who as Clegg rightly says, don't have to offer anything. Ups and downs are part and parcel of football.

Wonder how many fans will be tempted to jump on the bandwagon now, could end up with a few coaches going up to blackpool!

I agree 100% with "bluelady", what about the rest of us mugs that suffered last week but simply can't make it to Blackpool? Very short sighted offer in my eyes, probably really scared that no bugger will turn up this weekend against Leeds!!!

Good gesture and hopefully ensures a big following! Just hope we don't get thumped up there! :)

Yeah, very nice and all that but who is really gonna foot he bill for this ? The players who let everybody down ???......I don't think so, That is what I would like to see...why not have Martin, smith, etc give up a weeks wages each, that would pay for all of us to get to the game and to the next half a dozen or so.

IF YA DON'T PLAY.....YA GET NO PAY !!!!

Free coach travel big deal most of us won't go should have given us money back or a free ticket for Saturday against Leeds as we then may have a decent crowd turn up after that shambles.as always clegg not got a clue should work in ticket office with other muppets.

surely nobody expects the club to refund ticket cost for posh game, if they did people would then expect travel costs.
this in my opinion is as good as the club do.

All well and good for those who travel on coaches. I paid out £65 rreturn train fare from southampton ...probably alongside many more other town fans, who made their own way to peterboro...
What Town should realise is just how many fans travel long distances to attends games, its just not those who live in a radius of ipswich.
My call shall be going into the club today and ask for my free travel to blackpool...

Disappointed by some fo the fans reaction on here, this is a good gesture by the club. Once the singings are confirmed that will be good. I just hope everyone remembers that this is virtually a new squad and so will, need time to gel, COYB!

A reasonable gesture, and not something they had to do, but of course there are still all the moaners on here. I have come to the conclusion that a lot of our fans are actually only happy when they moan.

it's an excellent gesture that the club did not have to make - i don't remember the club asking for more money after the win at Doncaster last season.... it's all part of the game and grow up

There's simply no pleasing some people. The club didn't have to do it and I personally think its a good gesture. Those who don't... then tough. There wouldn't be many other clubs who would even give it a thought.

Good to have the debacle recognised in fan terms and to try to keep people on board. Unfortunately no good for me as I'm working and it would mean a 50 mile journey to PR to get the coach as they don't stop off the A14. Nevermind, credit where its due. Let's remember that supporting a club doesn't come with a guarentee of anything.
