Jewell Disappointed With Cup Exit
Jewell Disappointed With Cup Exit
Tuesday, 9th Aug 2011 23:01

Blues boss Paul Jewell was disappointed to see his side crash out of the Carling Cup at the first round stage as Northampton left Portman Road with a 2-1 victory. The Town manager was unhappy that his much-changed team failed to deliver and hopes to add to his squad before the end of the week.

Jewell said: “I’m obviously disappointed to lose the game. We obviously made a lot of changes and we were stretched across the back with Ívar Ingimarsson getting injured in training yesterday.

“We’re very disappointed that we didn’t get through. I guess that if Michael Chopra was playing tonight I think we would have had a couple of goals as there were plenty of balls flashing across the box, but it just shows that we our squad isn’t as strong in depth as we’d like it to be.”

The Town boss dismissed suggestions that nine changes to the side which won at Bristol City was too many: “I think that the team we had out there was well good enough to get a result today on paper but having said that I have to give credit to Northampton, I thought they were excellent.

“We had plenty of opportunities to get a second goal. I don’t think we had chance after chance but we had situation after situation where the ball’s flashed across the box or we’ve got a two-v-one situation and we don’t make the most of it.

“We’re not clinical enough in either box, I must have said that 20 times last year. The lads up front are decent players but there were decent balls going across the box and I want them to get two or three goals and give me a problem.

“It’s not just the front players, by the way, the whole Ipswich thing — we’re nice. We win one game, lose one, draw one, win one. I wanted to give them an opportunity tonight to show what they can do in front of 9,000, a great crowd again, and we haven’t done ourselves justice.”

There were a few players who impressed their manager: “I thought Jack Ainsley did OK, better than OK.

“I thought JET did OK, I thought he showed he’s going to be a threat, although he’s not 100% fit, but you can see he’s a talent.

“I thought Cressy did well. But too many players didn’t come up to the mark today and it’s a pity for them and a pity for us because we got beaten.”

Ingimarsson has a recurrence of the thigh strain he suffered with in pre-season and is a doubt for the weekend.

Jewell says the deal to sign Blackburn’s Keith Andrews isn’t yet done, contrary to reports elsewhere but confirmed that as reported by TWTD this afternoon the Irishman is at the club: “Keith Andrews is here and we’re speaking to him and we’re trying to get a deal together so he’ll become our player, but it’s not done yet.

“That would be a loan until the end of the season. That’s not a done deal, we’re trying to do it and if things go well over the next 24 hours, hopefully, he’ll be ours."

The Blues boss also has his sights on a central defender with an offer having been tabled but Town aren't the only club targeting him: “I think there are about four clubs, including a couple of Premier League clubs in for him as well, so that’s where we are.”

The Blues boss refused to confirm or deny whether that player is Liverpool’s Daniel Ayala: “I’m not going to comment on speculation.”

Northampton boss Gary Johnson was delighted with his side’s victory, which he felt was deserved: “I love coming here. We won here with Yeovil a few years ago. It’s a great result for us early doors. I don’t think too many people gave us too much of a chance.

“But we had faith in our philosophy and I don’t think anyone can complain about the way we played. We tried to play some football, some really good combination football like Ipswich play and we were very proud to have mixed it with a good football team by playing football."

Why the disappointment? If you play a reserve side you must expect to lose. That is why I saved my money. More nights like Arsenal ? What rubbish.

wasn't at the game but disappointed that Jaime Peters seems to have had a bad game. hope that doesn't rule him out in future. he's only ever really filled in at right back - i think he's much better as midfielder (although he's clearly only back up to others )

Wouldn't be the same if we didn't get the anti PJ post from JAS0999, but he was happy to give Keane all the time he wanted, bizzare. Although I have to agree with the majority of your post in respect of the various players you pointed out. I am sure he was not too concerned about the next round with league being no.1 priority and it was a genuine opportunity for some of the rest of the squad to put on a good display. I am sure that PJ is still chasing another CB as I am not convinced based on his showing so far that Injurymarsson is up to the job of being able to last a season and play most of the games. I have never felt that ALB would make a good no.2 and that the opportunity of getting R Wright in on a year contract cheaply is available. Roll on Saturday and hopefully a good performance against Hull.

Personally I don't think he's that disappointed, he has to be heard to say things along the lines of 'I'd like to see more big nights at PR like last season' to show the supporters that show up they will go for it. Let's face it what are the chances we were going to get to the semi's again? and have a draw like we had last season which enabled us to get that far? He undoubtedly has bigger fish to fry but have to agree along the lines of other comments that it was good opportunity of some of the fringe players getting a chance to show themselves. Lets see what we do on saturday against Hull and hopefully we can improve on our dreadful home record of last season.

Annoying but glad we can just focus on the league now. Bring on Hull!

A fully fit JET will be a decent player, looked good swapping flanks with Martin at the weekend, can see a lot of that this season. Martin giving 200% is a pain in the ar*e for most defensive set ups ...

Onwards and Upwards

Why are so many surprised by this result..the only surprise to me was that people were surprised we got beat in a mickey mouse cup!!!...it has proved has it not that the squad, prior to the recent incumbants, was now where near good enough! Take out the new signings and we struggle! allied to that the fact that Northampton had nothing to lose and played some decent football. The real Ipswich Town will return for the Hull match on Saturday....COYB!

Bluelady - i agree. Ellingtons ability to trap/stun a ball and then pass was way above anything which Scotland has ever shown. I think JET was much better playing behind the front 2 than in second half when on the wing. I'm sure PJ knows whats lacking defensively and will be addressing this. Everyones moaning about a CB or indeed lack of - be interesting to learn who we did approach and who turned us down.

I'm sorry mate but you clearly are being a little biased here. You defended RK over far worse mistakes than PJ, and you attack PJ whenever the opportunity arises.

Get behind the man, he'll bring in a CB.

I would have made changes to the team just a PJ did....knowing we haven't yet got strength in depth I would not risk my first team in a mean nothing match...look what has happened to Inggy....imagine playing Chops and he got injured! The result was a surprise never the less I was disappointed as I do hate losing any game....but in the end I would rather lose last night than this Saturday.....

Well done Northampton hope you go on a good run in this cup.......

the gap between the Championship and the lower leagues simply isn't as big as it once was. Certainly not big enough to play a second string and expect to get a result. Saying that though there were enough players out there that had an opportunity to stake a claim and sadly didnt take it.
If we'd won the game and the likes of Peters, Hyam, Ellington, Scotland had shone it would have been a worthwile "gamble"

Get to the quarter final and finish 7th or go out in the first round and finish 6th?

Ellington looks a useful player. Not sure where this 'Scotland has lost weight and looks sharper etc' business has come from, his usual lumpy, immobile, slow self.

Would rather do what PJ did last night and lose than stick out our best players and risk them getting injured..the league is what matters from here on..cup runs are nice but too much of a distraction.

Defenders gave both goals to Northampton. ALB played a very good game but was let down by his own Defense. One goal in particular was clearly ALB ball but the defender took the ball virtually out of his hands and rolled it to the Northampton Forward to tap the ball into the net. I am not a fan of ALB but i like justice where its due.The defense was rubbish time and time again they allowed the Northampton forwards into the 18 yard area unchallenged.Town were lucky to get away with a 2-1 loss. But in Paul Jewell I trust this game was a all about giving his younger players a trial to try and get the best from them? to see how they react in the big arena?. Also he would be crazy to put his trusted main players into, as one supporter stated a Micky Mouse cup game and end up with these players picking up injuries. We need to go for at least the play offs? COYB

Very Seldom do I air my views on here , but here is my assesment of the players last night
Lee-Barrett, A good back up keeper, not a first choice
Peters, Last game for some time I think, poor
Ainsley, Played well out of best position.
Smith, poor agian, will go out on loan I expect with a view to join a league 2 club
Cresswell, A positive performance.
Drury, Tried hard but should have had more impact against a team at this level.
Healy, Solid but uninspiring.
Hyam, Average against lowly opposition.
Emmanuel-Thomas, A frustrating player who will comeup with the goods now and again, Jewell will get the best from him hopefully
Ellington, Best days are gone.
Scotland, See Ellington.
Subs -Leadbitter, Martin, Maybe should have started. A class above the rest.

Wether we think going out of the competition is a blessing or not, I think we all agree that it proves our squad players are not up to much.
ALB is poor backup and whilst I have always been a Jaimie Peters fan, he was woeful last night. Couldnt believe one caller on the way home was singing his praises but hey many of us 'see a different game'.
Smith is clearly not up to the job and Ingmarsson is clearly a talented crock. I shudder to think what will happen Saturday if him and Delaney are out.
As was pointed out earlier, PJ should really have addressed this issue before now.
Difficult to judge Ainsley on last nights game so I will hold fire.
Healy was very quiet although a solid midfield backup usually and Drury was annonymous.
Hyam was sacrificed at half time as he was ineffective although again on the evidence of last season can do a job in the holding role which wasnt really called for last night.
Scotland/Etherington very poor shadows of their previous levels. With Priskin they make a trio who will get a goal on their day but will never again be prolific.
JET - MotM without a doubt despite another idiot ringing in who slated his commitment???
Overall, as has consistenly been highlighted on this site we desperately need another keeper, a RB, a CB and a pacy forward although JET could be than man with an additional wide man brought in.
Our first 11 will give anyone a game in this league but is asking a helluva lot to have your first 11 for even 60% of games in this league especially as it is more compressed than ever with an April finish.
Finally people keep drivelling about 4-4-2 etc. it doesnt matter on the formation. Bristol proved that with the first 11 we had out there we are flexible and the formation on paper is irelevant.

Tommy Smith was poor against Northampton. The rest of the team played ok but at times we were completely outplayed by Northampton. Our defence looked shaky every time they attacked and we looked out of our depth.
Hopefully it will be back to winning ways against Hull City....

Another humiliating defeat, Jewel blaming eveybody but himself. He seriously underestimated the Cobblers and showed a lack of respect by making so many changes. Ipswich were deservedly beaten and the only ray of light for me was Jay Emmanuel-Thomas who looks a decent player and always wants the ball. No wonder the league cup is dying out when managers like Jewel pick such dodgy teams.
