Jewell: Mentality Needs to Change
Jewell: Mentality Needs to Change
Saturday, 23rd Jul 2011 08:00

Boss Paul Jewell says he needs to change the mentality of a Town team which isn’t used to winning. The Blues manager believes it will take time and more signings to build a squad which is capable of competing at the top of the Championship.

Jewell said: “We’ve worked exceptionally hard over the summer trying to get players in to improve the squad.

"I came in last year with the remit to keep us up and if we were to get promotion next year - or to be in the shake-up - it would be great.

“But I think people are sensible enough to know that we’ve got to change the mentality of the club. The mentality of the team is one that’s not used to winning. That’s not going to change overnight.

“I’ve said all along that we need to improve the squad. I think we’ve made some good signings and hopefully we can make three or four other good signings before the end of the window.”

I agree ipswichm8 he has to sign up Bullard now and build the team around him! And in my eyes we really need a winger either wittergham or Tracey.

As I said before we have still got to replace McCauley, norris, wickham and a RB.

His hands are tied. Just like Roy Keane before him he is hamstrung by the current owner and Clog. We sell for 8 million yet still we wish to buy in the bargain basement. That is not going to get you Premiership football. Sooner or later you have to take the punt. If you want to hit the Prem you have to think about breaking wage structures and bidding decent money for decent players. Mr Evans wants the Prem but wants to do it on a budget. Might work as a Paul Jewell is a very clever fella in the transfer market but the best way is to take a proper punt and when you go after a player make sure you get him by offering proper money.

Change the mentality and perhaps the 4-5-1 system!

If we need more signings to build a squad capable of challenging, stop offering paltry sums for players and start to meet the valuation of the parent clubs. No wonder the first bid is always rejected it is always insultingly low.

If you read PJ,s statment, it,s about having a winning mentality. This is why he,s signed Lee Boyer, not about throwing money about willy nilly on players. As MajorBlue pointed out, Naridge hardly flashed the cash.

Smellmycheese -- I'm glad you don't run the club! Breaking wage structures is exactly what we do NOT want to do. It's the reason we went bust last time, and it's the reason why so many clubs are in dire financial circumstances now. The way ahead is careful, sensible team building, gradually getting in the right players to play in a system and understanding the ethos of the club. The total commercial experiment of the last 2.5 years failed - this is a new era. Long live slow but sure progress.

We definately still need more quality through the `Spine` of the team. A Pacy centrehalf, creativity in midfield and a partner/compitition in the frontline. Squad looks alot better got some experience and steel in Bowyer and ingamarsson but chopra aside we need more quality added. Really hope the signings that PJ is talking about make us more Dangerous!!!!

I don't buy this at all. Silly media friendly statement to manage expectations as opposed to actual fact.

I do hope this is some fancy football speak that "normal" managerial folk can't understand. I'm not sure telling your squad that not only are they not complete as a team but they are also not there mentally either - highly motivational.

On the other hand he could keep quiet and do what the first 6 letters of his job title says - manage.

if thats the case pj then bring in these 'winners that we need. We are desperate for a quality centre half and a quality holding midfielder, they are the key in my opinion. Then once those positions are sorted then turn our attentions to a winger, a right back, a striker and maybe a goalkeeper.

This club seems to inadvertently throw this statement out there every single pre season. We all know we need new signings, we have done for some time. It's no good keep saying what we need and not getting it. Serious strengthening urgently required now.

We have lost McCauley, Norris and Wickham. At present only Chopra seems to be a like for like replacement, the other recruits being no more than squad players or ones for the future. PJ reminds me of Joe Royale, knows his stuff but his hands are tied by lack of funds. Why are we still searching in the bargin bucket for players Mr Evans? You were quite happy to throw money at Magilton and then Clown Keano. Why then when at last we have a good manager the funds dry up, especially when we have just off loaded serveral senior players and got £8M for Wickham. All we need is a few decent players in the likes of Bullard, Sharp to set this team alight. Surely a team challanging for the top six will bring in more fans on a Saturday, thus clawring the extra outgoings back. Mr Evans if you don't watch it, it will be you this season the fans turn against and not the manager when things start going wrong.

It's not Jewell bringing down the expectations of the club and its fans, it's US LOT!! One crappy result - IN PRE-SEASON, and people are already spouting doom and gloom. This is exactly what happened last year. The fans started the season negatively. We have a responsibility to cheer on the players and the manager, not to overly criticise at the first sign of trouble, especially when we now have a manager that knows the weaknesses and is working bloody hard in my opinion to sort it out.

We'd be crap if we went to war, or something. We'd end up all just shooting ourselves in the head! Forget the player's winning mentality, where's ours?!

Why is he saying this now? We have known this for the last couple of years!
