Doncaster Turn Down Second Coppinger Bid
Doncaster Turn Down Second Coppinger Bid
Friday, 24th Jun 2011 13:26

Doncaster Rovers have turned down a Town offer of £400,000 for midfielder James Coppinger, according to reports in South Yorkshire. The 30-year-old was previously the subject of a £300,000 bid by the Blues which was rebuffed along with a £2.3 million offer for striker Billy Sharp.

Town manager Paul Jewell said last week that he would continue his pursuit of Coppinger, with the renewed bid reported over the weekend, but had decided not to make any further overtures for Sharp. Yesterday, Doncaster turned down a £2.8 million offer for Sharp from a Championship club believed to be Southampton.

Earlier in the week, Coppinger said that he was in no particular hurry to leave his current club: "I'll be reporting to Doncaster on 4th July and I'm looking forward to it. I can't wait to get back and I'm looking forward to next season."

The midfielder, who played alongside Town coach Sean McCarthy at Exeter, was away when Rovers turned down the Blues’ initial offer but talked to chairman John Ryan on his return: "I came back and spoke to the chairman and we left it at that.”

The Grecians are entitled to 15% of any profit Doncaster make on the £35,000 they paid the Devon club for the former Newcastle and Darlington man in 2004.

Former Town skipper Richard Naylor is in talks with Rovers and is expected to sign on at the Keepmoat Stadium having been released by Leeds at the end of the season.

is it not clear to us that this guy doesn't want to come to us?
If he was really interested then he would be in his Chairmans office asking for a transfer.......
Lets all get over this guy or sorry two players from Doncaster and move as i'm sure we can spend £million on better players.
How about going to Man City and asking the availability of Shaun wright-Phillips also what about Tottenmah for the likes of Jenas? All within our price rang or at least a season long loan deal? I would test the water with Spurs defo for say 6million plus Jenas for Wickham,

Got to be worth a punt????

Coppinger would be good signing, our midfield is not great by any means and he would add a lot, good player but Doncaster are holding out. It would be handy if they just said what they want or maybe they really do not want to sell. Agree however with some that we still struggle to sign many players.

I'd bid 750 000 at the most

Do you really think SWP or Jenas would come down to the championship or that Town could afford their wages? Better to get some good youngsters on loan who want to prove themselves.

Comeonthegoodtimes did you fail attend the Maths or Common Sense classes at school?
We cannot afford Bullard so doubt we could do a deal with Tottenham or Man City for that clown Jenas or Wright Philips.

this is not being negative but,

ME obviously believes in PJ as most of do on here, ME wants to get the PL like most of us on here so surely it's worth saying to PJ right you can have 10-15 Million to get your players in. I'm sure he has that type of money so why not really go out there and get a couple of top Championship players/good PL fringe players.
I dn't think we need 6,7 or 8 players like some do as Bullard proved that year. I think if we get a top centre half and a creative midfielder we will be right up there. If we have to go spend 5-6 million a piece on them then so be it but i think we really do need to start looking at the possibilities this could bring for us.......

Actually no i got a A* in maths at school Mickmillstash.
If you read it again i said if we sold Wickham and also said maybe a season long loan for SWP and in all honesty yes i do think we could afford a PL reserve player or two, IF we sold Wickham.

You say Clow Jenas but how many people would actually say no if he said he would join us? because if your more interested in Coppinger who is a good player, than Jenas who played a number of games last year in the PL then i'm thinking were not as ambitous as i thought we were.

Our midfield is an area we do need to concentrate on, if he's Doncaster's playmaker and what I've heard is a pretty good passer and dead ball specialist then surely he's worth more than 400k? - he'll have at least another 2 seasons in him.

500k too much for a midfielder who doesnt seem to want to leave his club anyway. PJ should concentrate on players who are more up and coming with the fight for a new challenge.

I really rate the way this guy plays and think he would really suit town. He chips in with his fair share as well. This guy would also compliment Leadbetter. Go get him PJ. I'd take hime for 750K over 3 free Koumas's

If you look at the Football League site last season's stats show Coppinger up well. 7 goals 10 assists (7 from Edwards was our hightest) and 2nd in shots on goal marginally behind Billy Sharp. Improve the bid.

Yes! Prescience!

I saw Elvis just last week in the Golden Lion ordering Tolley Cobbald at 1/6 a pint.
He looked challengingly around the room in a tight trousered sort of way and put his arms around his equally famous drinking partner (Ind Coope 1/4d) and said

"Ted and me. Me and Ted. We're killers. You see, we'll take the Bluebirds into Europe...but he's the man"

And Ted Phillips, 30 goals a season, that reticent fellow, thrust his tankard down the Pelvis' throat and kicked the ball against the bar, knocking the barman unconscious....

"Why'd you do that Ted?" asks the American

"I've got number 10 on me blue shirt, El, I've no choice.
What do you do?"

No matter. Only want him if we get sharp as well, which at the prices donny want is unlikely.

Donny don't want to sell Sharp or Coppinger and if John Ryan did accept a bid for either player(which he won't) the players wouldn't want to come to Ipswich. Sharp turned down better money from Leeds, Burnley and Sheffield Utd to go to Donny, Coppinger has said he wants to finish his playing career at Donny. It would be no good Marcus trying to give them an offer they can't refuse as the Donny board are much richer than Marcus and don't need the money. Ipswich town is wasting it's time even trying.
