Doncaster Turn Down Second Coppinger Bid
Doncaster Turn Down Second Coppinger Bid
Friday, 24th Jun 2011 13:26

Doncaster Rovers have turned down a Town offer of £400,000 for midfielder James Coppinger, according to reports in South Yorkshire. The 30-year-old was previously the subject of a £300,000 bid by the Blues which was rebuffed along with a £2.3 million offer for striker Billy Sharp.

Town manager Paul Jewell said last week that he would continue his pursuit of Coppinger, with the renewed bid reported over the weekend, but had decided not to make any further overtures for Sharp. Yesterday, Doncaster turned down a £2.8 million offer for Sharp from a Championship club believed to be Southampton.

Earlier in the week, Coppinger said that he was in no particular hurry to leave his current club: "I'll be reporting to Doncaster on 4th July and I'm looking forward to it. I can't wait to get back and I'm looking forward to next season."

The midfielder, who played alongside Town coach Sean McCarthy at Exeter, was away when Rovers turned down the Blues’ initial offer but talked to chairman John Ryan on his return: "I came back and spoke to the chairman and we left it at that.”

The Grecians are entitled to 15% of any profit Doncaster make on the £35,000 they paid the Devon club for the former Newcastle and Darlington man in 2004.

Former Town skipper Richard Naylor is in talks with Rovers and is expected to sign on at the Keepmoat Stadium having been released by Leeds at the end of the season.

If i wasnt so frustrated I would have to admire the Donnys chairmans stubborness, I guess beating them 6-0 wasnt the best way to get a bid accepted :/

tbh I don't really want him. I wouldn't want us to spend more than £500k on him really.

Are we so short of dosh that we have to rely on freebees and players that are basements buys? If so then I guess it is better to part with Connor Wickham without any further delay. Oh dear, Marcus Evans is number 125 on the UK's rich list and yet he is making Ebinizer Scrooge look generous - even before he'd seen a ghost or two!

Unconcerned as to whether we sign this player or not, obviousley PJ has seen something that he can add to the squad but anything more than 500,000 would be better spent else where.

Stubborn old buggar that John Ryan.

Pessimistic- the club lost £10,000,000 last year I'm not surprised he's a tad careful with his cash!!

Wait till Jan when they are rock bottom and their players jump ship.

Or till next summer when they go down and have to get rid of wages.

That will teach them.

I reckon around £700,000 would do it, if they reject that then forget it and go back in for him in January- when Donny are sitting in the relagation zone and cant afford not to take our money then.

Jewell knows what he requires and will have a price in mind, he will build a team of his own then live or die by them.
he has already shown he is happy to walk away if someone does not wish to sell at a price we are willing to pay

Southampton are in for Sharp? Blimey, you'd have thought Lambert and Barnard would be enough for any club.
