Nugent and Chopra Linked Again
Nugent and Chopra Linked Again
Tuesday, 24th May 2011 00:16

Town are once again being linked with a summer move for out-of-contract Portsmouth striker David Nugent. The Blues are also said to be keeping an eye on Cardiff frontman and long-time Roy Keane target Michael Chopra, while Doncaster are claimed to have put a £4 million price on striker Billy Sharp and midfielder James Coppinger.

Nugent, who has scored eight goals in eight games against the Blues and has netted in every match he has played at Portman Road, was a regular loan target of former boss Jim Magilton and was reported to be on Paul Jewell’s summer wish-list towards the end of last month.

Former Bury and Preston man Nugent, who was capped once by England, scored 14 goals during 2010/11.

The 25-year-old, who looks certain to be leaving Pompey during the close season, has also been mentioned in connection with QPR, Blackpool and Bolton.

Chopra was one of ex-Town boss Keane’s main targets last season but the club weren’t prepared to pay the Bluebirds' asking price.

The 27-year-old former Sunderland and Newcastle frontman, who is contracted to Cardiff until 2012, scored 11 goals in 28 starts and 11 sub appearances during 2010/11 despite suffering one or two injuries.

Meanwhile, Doncaster want £4 million for Town targets Billy Sharp and James Coppinger, according to one tabloid report. The Blues' £2.6 million offer for the duo was turned down just over a week ago.

Elsewhere, Leicester are reported to have made a £1 million offer for Sheffield United striker Ched Evans, who was also recently linked with Town.

Give up, I known Nugent is a good player blah blah blah, but he doesn't seem to like us and he's not really the sort of player we like is he? He's on £20,000 a week at Pompey so are we going to pay that to him or is he going to drop down £5,000? Probably not to both questions. He'll go to Bolton reserves.

Chopra...overrated, overpriced. Nothing over £2.5 million in my opinion and that won't get him anyway. How many goals this term?

Hang on. One scored 11 goals and the other 14 last season. I thought we were after a 25 a season striker not strikers.

Bullard and St Ledger first and foremost and then possibly Dyer. Three proven experienced pros who we can build around and help bring on Carson, Drury, O'Connor and hopefully the forgotten Hyam. Forget the likes of Chopra and Nugent - one very over-rated and the other a prize d*ckhead. Let's look abroad - there must be some young Dutch strikers out there who would jump at the chance of playing in the Championship for their local English club alongside a player like Wickham. Any news on Civelli by the way?

Civelli may as well go home now. Sorry but the leg injury seems to have done for him. Bullard regrettably will be with Warnock but hopefully we can get St Ledger and I regret to say our 20 goal man may well be Jason Roberts. No Dyer as his legs are gone (and have been for some considerable time) Le Fondre scores lots of penalties but isnt mobile enough for the Championship.

Personally I would like to see Nugent as he has that touch of arrognace our nice boys lack but i tink he will warm Bolton's bench.

Still only 3 months to kick off and we are bound to have signed someone by then... won't we?

Nugent has made it clearmany times that he doesn't rate us as a club and is not interested in coming here. And why would Chopra leave a more successful club to come here?

All links - let us know when we have actually signed someone!

However, can't see there be anything in the Chopra link, doubt Nugent will come here and Sharp is over-priced.

If you can recall after the Portsmouth match Nugent said that when he was asked to come on loan he was injured so would not have done himself justice, the time before that he wanted to stay in the Prem, who wouldn't!

If he comes, great, if he doesn't I hope he joins a Prem club so he doesn't score against us again

The way this Club stands right now we are NOT going to be an attraction to Players other than 'has beens' or 'wannabe's' - therefore we have to do exactly what the lot at Carrot Road did - sign the wannabe's - which they did.
In then comes the true test of a GOOD MANAGER, in being able to identify such Players and SIGN them before others do. Clegg then appears presumably. !!!

Don't have to look far for the 'blueprint' - it's down the A140, unfortunately.

Would like either of them but think this is just the papers rehashing old stories and I really cannot see us getting either Chopra or Nugent. Not convinced we will get Sharp or Coppinger either to be fair though.

If we got Coppinger and Chopra then we would have the players going on about Chops and Copps which would raise a smile or 2

h32. I agree with your last post 100% in regards the budgies signing wannabes. We need to take a good look at what & how they have achieved back to back promotions. Chopra/ Nugent are unlikely to happen folks. Think our manager will get in the right personnel, but i think we need patience, hungry players who WANT to play for our great club, again, Lambert has been very good at this signing relative unknowns who have a great team & work ethic. Food for thought ladies & gents.

Why do we want either of them? Neither of them can cut it in the Premiership. I agree with Havoc, more imagination!

Nugent....meh

How many times do we want to sign a guy who has reffused to join us on more than 1 occasion...

How about the forgotten man.. Simon Cox? Surely he will be available with WBA wanting to take the next step. He was given oppotunities late this season and looked more than capable. Now being capped for his country...surely a real possibility.

get chopra now! 27 is a very good age for a striker.if a striker is going to be any good its about this age they start to peak.we need to stop dipping our toe in the water and just go and get the bloke.i think if we get this one deal done that could get the ball rolling transfer wise.i think town should be camping outside jay bothroyds house too.not an impossible coup for us?
