Town Target Derby Hero Pollitt
Town Target Derby Hero Pollitt

Town boss Paul Jewell will look to sign Wigan keeper Mike Pollitt in the summer, according to a report this morning. The 39-year-old, who was a member of Jewell's Latics squad, previously played one game while on loan with the Blues, the 3-1 home derby victory over Norwich in 2006.

Much-travelled Pollitt is out of contract in the summer and has played only three games for the Lancastrians this season, his only Premier League appearance having been as a sub. The Farnworth-born keeper has been a regular on Wigan’s bench throughout the campaign.

Town have offered new contracts to current keepers Brian Murphy and Arran Lee-Barrett but look likely to sell Hungarian international glovesman Márton Fülöp, who is out of Jewell’s starting XI at present and has only a year remaining on his deal.

Pollit started his career with Manchester United but moved on to Oldham in the summer of 1991 on a free transfer without making a senior appearance for the Red Devils.

He subsequently spent time with Bury, Lincoln, Darlington, Notts County, Oldham again but on loan, Gillingham, Brentford (loan), Sunderland, initially on loan before signing a permanent deal, Rotherham (loan), Chesterfield (loan) and Rotherham full-time before Blues boss Jewell signed him for Wigan in June 2005 for £200,000. In addition to his one-game loan spell with the Blues, the 6ft 3in tall stopper also had four games at Burnley in 2007.

Meanwhile, Town owner and chairman Marcus Evans is reported to have become close friends with Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp since becoming involved in football.

According to an “Ipswich insider”: “Marcus and Harry have become the best of pals in the last two years or so. When Marcus bought the club he had no football experience and turned to Harry for advice.

“But it has gone way beyond that since then. They have even had trips abroad in a private jet and played in Sir Bobby Robson’s annual golf tournament in Portugal.”

Evans sounded Redknapp out regarding the Town management situation when Roy Keane was sacked with Steve Cotterill and Sean O’Driscoll on the short-list along with Paul Jewell.

Their friendship is also said to be why the likes of Giovani Dos Santos, Andros Townsend and Jake Livermore have spent time on loan with the Blues in recent seasons and why Tottenham are understood to be the frontrunners for Connor Wickham’s signature if and when the 18-year-old striker makes the move into the Premier League.

while i wldnt say a new keeper is the main priority we do need another 1. fulop is nowhere near our best all round keeper, great shot stopper, rubbish on crosses(has conceded several goals this season by not getting to crosses). murphy easily our best all round keeper. naa, why u think hes too short to be a top keeper? he abt same height as shay given, who clearly is a top keeper. alb is ok, but not no1 material. so yes, getting a new keeper is a good idea. of course, 2 strikers 2 full backs & a holding midfielder the priorities.

If Fulop goes, the keeper i would welcome back with open arms is Neil Alexander.

Agree intercept. A good keeper, who has only played 25 games for Rangers. Might be on too much money as a bench warmer to want to come back

they should be talking to me for glovesman of next season! i mean sure, ive lost all my pace, crocked shoulder, dodgy knees, my cross taking skills arnt what they used to be, my decsion making is a bit blunt and ive forgoten how to shout at defenders, but i couldnt do any worse right? im only 27 years young and would be on a cheap contract... ;)

When we got fullop many said it was the least of our worries as Murphy ok, so why is he suddenly not good enough? As for this guy, a one year deal for his experience particularly If he can teach flappy how to catch a cross might not be the awful move many seem to think....

PJ, a 40 year old keeper is not a good idea, and I haven't renewed my season ticket based on stupid signings so I trust their is no truth in this whatsoever

MF clearly doesn't cut the mustard currently for PJ, so if BM was 100% fit would he be playing ahead of ALB? We are unlikely to discover the answer to this one until TOMORROW. I, for one, would be hugely surprised if ALB kept his place after the Norwich debacle; so MF or BM? This will tell us a lot about the GK scenario for next season.

Whatever despite what PJ has said about 'Dads Army' teams I can't see Mike Pollitt as any solution to any problems we may have.

Wouldn't mind picking up Alex Smithies from Huddersfield, but probably unrealistic as they want A LOT for him. Therefore maybe bring in one of the Prem reserve keepers on loan.

If you think about it all sucsessful teams have a good solid keeper who can win you 10-12 points a season thats why Arsenal cant win anything e.g carling cup final all their keepers are a accident waiting to happen. If you look at QPR they have paddy Kenny Norwich have Ruddy they are number ones play every game are keeper situation is a joke

if we want an old keeper whose knows his stuff is cheap and freely available why not mark bosnich ?

tractorboy2434 added 10:00 - Apr 25
Same old story, players who he signed in a previous lifetime, 39 years old, forget it and find a goalkeeper who can play without the aid of a zimmer frame.

bobble - I think Bosnich is 74 next birthday, just a tad too old to be considered me thinks - even by us .............
