Bullard: It Didn't Feel Like a 5-1
Bullard: It Didn't Feel Like a 5-1
Friday, 22nd Apr 2011 15:00

Goalscorer Jimmy Bullard says last night’s heavy defeat to Norwich City didn’t feel like a match destined to end 5-1 with the Blues having plenty of possession. Despite last night's loss, the on-loan Hull City man remains confident that Portman Road will still be a good place to be next season.

Bullard said: “It did not feel like a 5-1 as we had plenty of possession and our night was summed up when we pulled back to 3-1, had a corner and then saw Norwich break to score a fourth goal.

“To be fair we were going forward at the end and leaving just two players back, but it was the first two goals that really killed us. We came out flying second half, but could not get back into the game.

“We were beaten by a better team, and sport is like that sometimes — it kicks you in the teeth.

“We put in a good shift but Norwich played exceptionally well and they finished their chances expertly.”

The 32-year-old said he felt for the close-to-sell-out crowd: “I feel sorry for our fans as they were terrific and I’ve never played in a derby game that had so much atmosphere.

“It surprised me how intense the atmosphere was having played in a Fulham versus Chelsea game that is not in the same league as these East Anglian affairs.”

As for his future, the midfielder says he’s not yet talked to his parent club: “I haven’t spoken to Hull. There are a number of Ipswich players out of contract and they deserve to get sorted before thoughts turn to my position.

“But what I do know is that Ipswich is going to be a great place to be next season — despite last night’s woes.”

broomfield123 ""The way an apparant fat slow grant holt ripped dd and mac apart is beyound beleave"""

Wouldn't say he 'ripped dd and mac apart'. He got to the byline once and a goal resulted, but apart from that he was largely ineffective.

Obviously once to many . To many mistakes by our senior experienced and apparent better players

Jimmy was head & shoulders above anyone else last night, & for his effort & commitment I thank him, it's a shame that nobody else matched him, & for that they should all be ashamed. I just don't see how we will be able to keep Jimmy into next season, someone else will have seen how he has played for us & snap him up.

I think the majority of us are still pissed at the scoreline. Yes it was a huge defeat for us and even worse it was home to Norwich. Most of you (if not all) are pretty much flipping at the players, which would be understandable if there were much to criticise... The performance was... Average I think is a good word to describe it, not much like the "worst performance ever" garbage you people are throwing out there. Anyway, let's face it, the biggest problem we have is the lack of a skilled finisher to put away all the chances that we create. Wickham is young and still learning and well Scotland and Priskin are just awful. However Scotland is not a lone striker, he never has and still isn't now so i'll let him off for being played out of position. We had more chances than Norwich and failed to put them away, but they punished us heavily for it, simple as that. We weren't bad, they were just a lot better and it's no surprise looking at where they are in the table and the quality of players that they have. So for the love of God, please stop slating the team purely out of a "heat of the moment" basis and realise that it just wasn't our day and we were beaten (this time fairly) by a better side!

Dear Jimmy,
I [ and nearly 30,000 other people ] think you should stay at Portman Road. In a very short space of time you've become the fans favourite, and we know you're enjoying playing for us. Last night was just a blip [ even a bad one ], you know better than us as you train with the other guys, that they are all better than that performance. Now, with you on board [ and signed ] and as captain [ should
Norris go ]+ the new recruites in summer, just think how good it would be to end your playing career at Portman Road and then a job in hospitality [ which I believe would suit ]. Come on Jim, you know it makes sense. Sign here.............
please !

Clegg, we/YOU need to sign this man up now before we lose him as he was all over the place on BlackThursday by far the best player in town top, wish the team would take leaf out of JB's book. Wickham 10M striker never! The more I watch him play, the critical I become of him, he will no doubt become a great player, but a bit more ball control and muscle needed, Josh Carson was not used to his full potential on BT, he was always calling for the ball and in many cases unmarked! Oh well.

The most annoying thing about Naawrich is the fact that Lambert built a team with not alot of funds and from the lower leagues, how much money have we spent? Which has got us no where, no wonder ME is reluctant to waste more money on rubbish signings etc, but you have to speculate to acumulate! More dosh please ME.
Just think if Joe Royal had funds available when he was at PR, he done V well with No money whilst we were in Administration. Nuff Said!

A 4 hour journey from SW London (it normally takes me about 2 and1/2 hrs) meant that I missed the first 2 Norwich goals ( which when I saw them later were obviously very soft but also very crucial to the final result). Norwich who are a good team and playing very well were never going to lose from there.
JB is right - it didn't feel like 5-1 to me either as for most of the middle hour of the game we were camped in their half albeit with not a lot of effect.
Lambert set them up in the second half to give us nothing and they did it very professionally.
The third goal was a killer because it enabled them to relax and even when JB scored his wonderful goal they were still 2 goals ahead and knowing we were going to throw everyone forward ,able to pick us off for goals 4 and 5.
I only wish JB's strike had happened before their 3rd goal when with only a one goal lead they may have got a lot more tense.

Incidentally,I'll be at Swansea and I anticipate another good away performance from the team.

For those who think it was merely a 'bad day at the office' consider this. To concede 5 goals in any game is disastrous and can't just be explained away as an 'off day'. To do it in a home game is unacceptable in modern football; equivalent to freak shows. To do it against your fiercest rivals having already conceded 4 in the away game is a horror story.

While no-ones making excuses, it's clear that the party line is 'mistakes were made, keep stum and we'll bury the evidence'.

PJ must now realise the extent of the problem that has cursed ITFC for several years. There is an inherent complacency that seeps out at every defeat. Where is the burning anger and frustration that they, the players, have let themselves down and also the fans? No, there will be no culprits deemed culpable; obviously rightly so. But personally (naming no names) there are a number of players who featured in the debacle who it wouldn't bother me if they never featured again.

Thus JB's comments are typical. It didn't feel like a 5-1? Check the papers son. The supporters, in their heart of hearts, might have just suspected that our recent roll might be halted abruptly but they didn't deserve the smack in the teeth that the overall performance delivered on Thursday. And they don't deserve these kind of patronising comments either.

Don't misconstrue, I love JB as a footballer and he was deffo MOM on Thursday. I live in hope that we can get him tied up beyond the end of this season but I can't see any consolation in statements like these.
