Southend Target Brown Loan as Jewell Looks for Further Additions
Southend Target Brown Loan as Jewell Looks for Further Additions
Wednesday, 23rd Mar 2011 10:53

Southend United are targeting a loan deal for Town defender Troy Brown with Blues boss Paul Jewell also looking to add to his squad before Thursday's deadline.

Jewell says there could be moves both in and out of the club in the next couple of days: “We have made one or two enquiries, both yesterday and Monday. We are waiting for clubs to come back to us.

“There may be one or two that leave to go out on loan. There’s always something that comes up late on, so I wouldn’t discount anything.”

Earlier in the week, Town were said to have made a further move for West Brom's Simon Cox with Jewell likely to be keen to strengthen his striking options above all else.

Jewell has been looking to get his young fringe players out on loan with Irish striker Ronan Murray already at Torquay, centre-half Tommy Smith at Colchester and keeper Ian McLoughlin at Stockport.

Shrimpers boss Paul Sturrock recently saw Brown, who is yet to feature for the Blues' first team under Jewell’s management, in action for Town’s reserves against his club’s second string in a 4-0 Blues victory at Playford Road.

Brown will be away with the Welsh U21 side next week for their European Championships qualifier in Andorra.

The 20-year-old, who has made eight starts and six sub appearances for Town since signing from Fulham’s academy in July 2009, is out of contract at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Southend youngster Kane Ferdinand, watched recently by the Blues, has signed a two-and-a-half-year professional contract at Roots Hall.

really rate this guy, definately one to keep hold of and excellent back up in defence. Does an ok job at right back but is excellent cover for big Mac. Not a hoof ball player, so will fit Jewells style of play i believe. Hopefully the loan spell will have a 24 hr recall in case of injury. will give him chance to prove his is worth a new contract.

Agree bluelady we should keep him as he has showed a lot of promise this season and as you say will be excellent cover. Should not be too expensive to sign him up either.

Bluelady - Brown IS a hoofball player who is not comfortable on the ball at all. He looks good defensively but if he wants too play under Jewell he needs to stop being scared of having the ball at his feet.

Martus totally disagree im afraid, out of the younger defensive players (JP aside as i dont count him as a defender) he is the one most comfortable with the ball at his feet, in my oppinion that is.

Mr. Brown, Mr. Brown, calling Mr. Brown
Mr. Brown, Mr. Brown, what's up now?

A good stopper and slotted in nicely for us, I hope he gets a new deal as he has plenty of promise for me.

With 8 games to go, there is not a lot of point bringing anyone in unless it is with a view to a permanent move. I'd rather keep our money for the summer. That said, there is a big game on 21st April I'd like to win!!

Bluelady - if you think he's good on the ball then you'll be blown away by the young defenders in Italy, France, in fact any country except the British ones. They are not afraid to bring the ball out of the defence and can play a good pass, and that's common in every tier of football in these countries.

Martus quite possibly, i am comparing him to those already at the club and in English football. lets hope Jewell can find a little gem for right back with the kind of ablity you discuss above.

good in the air but the ball should be played on the ground where he lacks composure. Can he improve.... maybe..... is he worth a contract.... a year maybe.

As for incomings could Marcus sign Messi, Ronanldo, Nani on loan for just for 1 game on the 21st. Go on ME... you know you want to!

Brown is another example of another young player with lots of potential that needs competitive games if not his career will falter. Jewell has quite rightly pointed out that the reserve games that we have are really 'mickey mouse ' games so how anyone is supposed to properly develop is beyond me but not apparently the FA who seem to think that it is ok at a club and therefore national level.

Interesting times. We have 3 promising young centre backs (Eastman, Brown and Smith). I get the impression next season PJ wants three first choice CBs (hopefully including McAuley!) and then one of these guys as back up. That leaves on out on a long term loan and one to be released. Personally I think Smith is the best but could probably do with a season on loan to play regularly, i think Brown and Eastman are at a very similar level to be honest. Tough decisions ahead.

I'm with martus on this one i don't think he will be good enough for this level, he is ok defensively but not sound. His co-ordination is very poor imo, and not strong enough in the air or in the challenge. I don't like to knock young players but he is not someone we should be pinning any hopes on.

I would have kept brown and sent maculey to Southend

chripswich : - I suppose there's always the thought that to get a player on loan gives the club a chance to look at him playing in the team and he to see if he likes playing here before possibly signing come summer. Just a thought.

Could you have a better opportunity than now to try out some of our younger players? Why send Ronan Murray on loan when we could have actually had a proper look at him? He'll never get a chance next season when we've got our 25 goal a season striker.

geezer...anyone available on loan now is useless and cannot get in a first team..I am fed up with useless loans (bar bullard of course..the exception that proves the rule!)

Brown has potential. A loan move will do him good. Hoping for a triker before Thursday so PJ can finally prove that he DOES intend to play two up front. We are afterall safe now.

bluelady added 16:31 - Mar 23
not sure we will get a striker in by tomorrow, if they are any good they wont be available, think you will have to wait till the summer Jas....

Brown is good at the ball with his feet if given options. West brom in league cup he was outstanding and we played the ball around the back really well. Games against Swansea etc he had to play it long as lack of movement from midfield gave him no other choice.

fine to let Brown go on loan, but I think he has the makings of a very good centre back, so give him a new contract in the summer

... sorry bluelady - will need to see PJ's intent well before then! I'm sure several thousand fans will agree. With two games before season ticket deadline, would have thought PJ would be keen to show us what he intends to do - afterall we are safe. No excuse for one up front now ....

Changing the subject slightly, am I the only one getting seriously p****d off with the scum based evening star and their constant sarcastic, wind up comments ? Just a random look at the back pages comes up with ' Portman Road gloom ', ' not good enough for the top half of the championship ' and ' a motley crew of makeshift full backs '. Oh how they love this constant stirring ! Bloody disgraceful if you ask me. Anyone else feel the same ? I've never wanted to turn them over more than I do now in Easters game !
