No Keane-Style Blast from Jewell
No Keane-Style Blast from Jewell
Wednesday, 16th Mar 2011 15:59

Right-back Carlos Edwards has revealed that there was no Roy Keane-style rollocking from Paul Jewell after last night’s 3-0 defeat to Watford. The Trinidadian says the new manager took a much calmer approach in the dressing room after the game.

Edwards said: “We were poor and I was shocked how subtle and calm the manager was after the game.

“We were let off easy peasy and if it had been the previous manager the club would need a new dressing room now. As players we have to be relieved that we did not get our heads chewed off.

“The manager still made his point and got his message across, but it boils down to the fact that we are aware that we have to improve as we cannot carry on playing like we did last night. We were miles off the pace and did not look like scoring when balls were placed in the box.”

Edwards admitted that Watford’s two-goal hero Danny Graham was his man at the third minute corner from which the Championship’s top scorer put the Hornets ahead: “I take full responsibility as Danny Graham was the man I was marking, but he was two yards out when he headed the ball and we have a 6’7” keeper in goal.”

So boring, same old same old tripe coming out. Fact is we will keep on producing results and performances like this while we have the same players here, jog on.

Edwards you are such a team player....... bet the guys love having you around knowing at some point they maybe your scape goat. I have been a supporter of you, but really think yoú need to think before you speak, this is the third time i believe you have come out and blamed your fellow team members. Lets face it everyone including you were appauling last night. As for PJ not shouting, he probably felt like the rest of us totally and utterly lost for words.

They were rubbish and maybe jewell was lost for words. More like he was thinking they are poo , and he knows it , hence needing 8+ new players in the summer. we are unlikely to be relegated so if the players dont bother , fine , the door is ajar for them to do one .
They were all down at David lloyd , didnt look like a bunch of losers which is exactly how they should feel. Looked pretty chilled out actually which is a disgrace.Last night they didnt look fit to wear the shirt ( almost all of them )

Can't believe everyone is giving Edwards grief, gave the ball away once or twice but who didnt last night? I love Jimmy Bullard as much as the next bloke and he's been superb since arriving but I notice how no one has mentioned the mistakes he made for the 2nd and 3rd goals.

Carlos you have just demonstrated what Pj was tring to say, players not taking responsibility so he can't of got his message across

I have an old mate who is a Northern based media footie guy. He told me when Ippo signed Fulop that Sunderland considered that he was very poor on crosses and not the bravest at coming off his line for stuff when there was a load of players coming in.....and more importantly Bruce did not rate him.

'I was shocked how subtle and calm the manager' - although perhaps RK's approach may have been over the top, I am not sure this type of approach is a good idea either. I imagine the best managers are somewhere in-between - arm around the shoulder when needed BUT raising voices when needed to. Last night the Ipswich players needed a blast! They were truely awful - not helped by some negative tactics from PJ.

jas0999 , your steady drip drip criticism ALREADY of Jewell might - might - just have some legs if , as bluelady has observed previously, you hadn't spent 18 months apologising & defending the worst manager in out history, constantly pleading with everyone to be less judgmental and give him more time! We get the "I don't like PJ's style" thing but for heavens sake, starting on this type of sniping campaign is a bit rich. He has inherited a £7mn legacy of complete crap (including 2.5mn on the worst strikers since lapaz et al) that he is going to have the mother of all challenges replacing. So far, the only players he has brought in are Bullard & dyer which i think most people would see as being pretty tidy busines ( your "send Dyer back to WH he is a complete waste of time" is a ridiculously premature judgement). When he has started to get close to surpassing the whole plethora of "worst ever" records that the pikey madman clocked up in no time at all, then have a pop but in the meantime try suspending judgement a little eh?

Garv, agreed on performance he wasnt the worse by a long way... I dont actually think he is that bad at right back unlike many BUT to keep making little jibes at your fellow team mates really isnt on, wont help the team spirit will it? Washbrook i think you make some very good points, last night i was totally cheesed off with everyone from the top down, it simply wasnt good enough for whatever reason, but i gave Keane time (not as long as some i may add) and i will give Jewell time too. When its his team he has created performing like they did last night then and only then will I lay all the blame on Jewell. Even H32 who has his negative moments said the manager needed time, so if you are reading H32 seems we agree more every day, and i back you in saying how poor last night was and indeed through my blue tinted glasses nowhere near good enough!

I think Jewell's "blasts" are reserved for special occasions. A manager shouldn't use these every week and I am glad Jewell is not like that.

As for negative tactics, these are only because Keane left such poor striking options and Jewell is having to make do with what he has inherited for the time being. Bullard and Dyer have certainly added to our attacking threat, and he tried to sign Austin. Jewell's record is one of attacking football with quality strikers and decent wing play, and I am sure we will see that after he has had a chance to sort the squad out in the summer.

Remember, we were fast heading towards the relegation zone when Jewell took over and despite some recent poor results we are now 12 points clear of Scunthorpe, 14 points clear of Sheff Utd and 18 points clear of Preston (with a vastly better goal difference than all of them).

To be fair, I don't think we were that bad first half, but unlike other weeks, the half time talk did not produce the results.

Yes, Bullard did give the ball away for the second goal, but the whole world knows his knees are bad and won't risk them in a tackle, that's why he went down so easily looking for a free kick, but where was the cover. Leadbitter looks like he was sulking because Bullard takes all the free kicks and corners now, he was absolutely anonymous last night.

Drury looked our best player for an hour but clearly the step up, fitness wise, is proving difficult. Likewise with Dyer. He will need games, but we only have him for a month.

Like someone said ranting and raving is not the best, nor maybe is this laid back approach always right. What PJ needs to do is drop some of these players and bring some of the fringe players in. Keeping a settled team is fine but complacency can set in. Drop Edwards and bring in Peters. Drop Leadbitter and play Hyam. Even if its only for one game, it just might make them pull up their socks a bit for when they gain their place back.

I would also drop Priskin and Scotland and Connor looks like he could do with a rest, but we haven't got anybody else.

i have to be honest I've not been impressed with Fulop for some while, don't get me wrong he had a cracker against Cardiff, & he's a good shot stopper, but as for crosses..... useless, doesn't come & command his area, the safest GK we've had in our ranks recently was Begovic, & Pullis saw that & snatched him for peanuts from Portsmouth, he had a great presence & made the defence feel safe, something that I dont feel Fulop does

Bluelady...When do you consider the team to be Jewell's and not Keanes?
Jewell has brought in 3 players since his arrival,so i take it that the other 8 first team players have got to leave!
Jewell is our manager now so he alone is responsible for results.

The team play like they are scared... perhaps it is still Roys team more than you imagine @depressed
I don't think it is the quality of the players that is the problem... it is the quality of the team. By which I mean the team does not have the right blend of players. Too many players are quiet. We need more confident players capable of turning games round... or to use PJs phrase we need more cockiness.

Depressed he didn't know what we needed Jan, he has brought in players to keep us up and will create his own team on the summer, panic buying in Jan is pointless as are too many loans. he now knows his team well enough now to have an idea who stays who goes and what he needs. who knows if he will succeed but I for one intend to give him more than a few weeks before I decide how good he is.

Garv..I am quite happy to give Jewell time to change the fortunes of the club around.
However i personally don't agree with you and certain others when you blame keane for our recent poor form.

Bluelady..Do you think the loan signing of Dyer was a good move?
0

bluelady added 20:23 - Mar 16
Depressed i actually think its a move to see how it goes with a view to signing him in the summer on a free... dont know the ins and outs of the deal, if we are paying a great deal then no i dont, if however we have him to 'help West Ham out' to get him fit then i dont have too much of an issue. If he gets match fit quickly i think he will add value, but after last night the jury is out. Im certainly not sentimental about it. Bullard great signing, not sure id want him full time as his lack of fitness an issue but he has helped us get out of trouble so ticks the help us keep up box. BTW for the record i dont blame Keane, he has gone now, i blame the very average team he has left behind.......

What a dick Edwards is. Always mouthing off about everything at the club, but never personally being to blame despite 'taking full responsibility' I still remember his comments about wanting to rub the supporters noses in it when we dared to criticize one of the towns many abysmal performances. As for the management, not everything good is down to Jewell and everything bad down to Keane. Personally I think its a matter of time before Jewell does give them a well earned earbashing

Games turn on little things. A potential 0-3 can be a 3-0 if you score first, and the team's confidence is lifted. But we have ineffectual strikers. This is the most important hole to be filled by PJ.
