Town Linked With King
Town Linked With King
Thursday, 10th Mar 2011 07:14

Town are reported to be keeping an eye on Coventry City striker Marlon King’s contract situation. The controversial 30-year-old’s deal is up in the summer with talks regarding new terms at the Ricoh Arena said to have stalled.

King, who was sent off in the 1-1 draw between the Sky Blues and Town in Roy Keane’s final Blues away game in January, joined Coventry in September, two months after being released from prison where he had been serving 18 months for sexual assault and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Prior to his conviction, King had been with Wigan Athletic, who sacked him, having joined them Latics in January 2008, after Paul Jewell had left the Lancastrians.

The Dulwich-born Jamaica international started his career with Barnet, moving on to Gillingham in 2000, during which time he spent another spell in prison, this time for receiving stolen goods.

In December 2003 he joined Nottingham Forest for £950,000, subsequently going on loan to Leeds and Watford. His switch to the Hornets was made permanent for £500,000 in December 2005.

Having come close to joining Fulham, King signed for Wigan for £5 million in January 2008, spending time on loan with Hull and Middlesbrough while with the Latics. Over his career, King has scored 128 goals in 318 starts and 88 sub appearances.

chiselhurstblue..........

I appreciate what you're saying and to a degree you're correct, but............

The man has showed no remorse for his thuggery, if he had and held his hands up and said he was wrong then maybe more but be a bit more willing to forgive.

Get over it everyone. He'd be here to play football. You haven't got to live / work with him. If he does the job who cares about his past. This is a typical Ipswich town reaction. We'll never get anywhere just signing nice boys!!

Chislehurst, Roy Keane said something similar. And what did we get? Atrocious football, terrible results and falling gates. There is something to be said about the values of a club - it defines how the club is regarded in the game, and for Ipswich Town that has always been a hugely positive image, for both the way we play the game (or used to) and the hospitality and friendliness off it. And where did this get us? An FA Cup, a UEFA Cup and recognition as one of the best sides in Europe. Joe Royle continued this ethic and he came the closest anyone has to taking us to the top again. It's rare that I could ever be considered a traditionalist, but when it comes to the values of Ipswich Town FC, I am absolutely a traditionalist.

The man is revolting, plus his strike rate is crap anyway.

No thanks. This man is a piece of $hit who has no right to play for our "family club". As someone else said previously, i'm all for rehab but he's been away 3 times now and will never learn. No wife beaters allowed.

Matteo I care my children are massive football fans what kind of role model does he represent? I like a previous poster would be more forgiving if he appeared remorsefull but he just carries that arrogant swagger, and often sent off so not a good role model on pitch either.

I laughed out load when i read this, Jewell said he wants to bring something different to the squad, didnt think it would be habitual criminal!

If he did sign (which is extremely uinlikely as i believe evans and clegg, dispite their failings, would not allow this type of "player" in a community, family club), his strike rate is no better than what we have here already!

Who said anything about wanting 'nice' boys Matteo.
The bloke is the typical 'you cant touch me Im a footballer' to$$er.
A thug who would cause more problems that would be solved by a handful of goals. I wouldnt pss on him.
No Thanks.

I cringed when I read this.

Matt Holland had a flawless character and was a quality player.

Brian: good point about Holland. He's also someone who still clearly loves this club and its values.

Marlon King must NEVER be allowed to play for our club - even the suggestion of it makes me feel sick.

Outrageous if true, however this is probably kings agent trying to stimulate interest in the player and trying to get king a better deal at the ricoh, I don't seriously believe jewell would want someone like marlon king...

Please, let this be more Mail rubbish. He should not even be considered for the Town.

I can only hope this is paper talk. I certainly would not pay to see a team which he was signed for. He should have been frozen out of the game.

Tony Adams as a PR man!

Just been looking at Wikipedia entry for King. Even the PFA refused to help him, and they're a fairly forgiving bunch. I feel sorry for his kids - what sort of a role model is he for them? Don't want him anywhere near my club. He should give up football and go and work for an agency which campaigns against violence against women. Then I'd forgive him.

My final word on the matter: People who have mentioned Tony Adams in this context are completely missing the point. Adams is a recovering alcoholic, and as far as I'm aware has never been convicted of offences involving violence. Furthermore, he has put his money and energy into helping people in a similar situation to himself - ask Paul Merson and many others. Tony Adams is almost the antithesis of Marlon King and it's offensive to mention him in the same breath as Marlon King.
