Jewell's Half-Time Blast Does The Trick
Jewell's Half-Time Blast Does The Trick
Saturday, 5th Mar 2011 20:22

Town boss Paul Jewell says the first half-time rollocking of his time in charge of the Blues inspired his team to their 2-0 victory at Cardiff. The Blues vastly improved after the break to secure a second successive double over the promotion-hunting Bluebirds.

Jewell said: “I’m delighted with the result and certainly the second half. I wasn’t very happy with the first half, I couldn’t wait to get them in at half-time and change a few things, say a few home truths and in the second half we were a lot better.

“It was the first time I’ve lost my temper with them but I felt it was necessary and I think we got the response. Our goalie was terrific, he kept us in the game.”

The Blues boss says his side were much better during their recent defeats than they had been during the first half: “It’s ironic this game because that’s the worst we’ve played in four games for 45 minutes and yet it’s the best result we’ve had in four games. It does even itself out.

“The second half was terrific, I thought we got stronger as the game went on. I thought we nullified them, they were passing it around us in the first half and we weren’t getting close to them. We changed it around in the second half and we got close to them.

“It’s a tough place to come, I’m delighted with the second half performance, disappointed with the first, but at least we’ve responded.”

Jewell revealed that defender Mark Kennedy has a hamstring injury and is set for a spell on the sidelines. The Blues boss says the former Cardiff man will be missed, although he was pleased with his replacement: “He’s been outstanding for us, but in fairness to Darren O’Dea, I thought he was excellent.

“We’ve overcome a bit of adversity as well but we’re delighted with the three points and we move on to Tuesday now.”

Cardiff assistant boss Terry Burton took the post-match press conference with manager Dave Jones at a function and was understandably downbeat: “We’re gutted, we’re disappointed, we don’t like to lose, it hasn’t happened that often and we’re always disappointed when it does.

“But you’ve got to look at the performance and the performance warranted more than losing 2-0. You will have got an impression about the game and no one can tell me that the opposition have come here and deserved to get a 2-0 win.”

Burton felt Dekel Keinan’s first half goal, which was disallowed for offside, should have stood: “It was a legitimate goal, that puts us 1-0 up, we’re dominating the game, we’ve peppered their goal and they’ve hardly been in our half of the pitch.

“We dominated the game but we got beaten 2-0, that happens in football sometimes.”

Sign Bullard up now before Hull watch this & want him back! He is the touch of class we have been missing for a few years. Get a decent striker in the off season (easier said than done I know) and I think we will be there or thereabouts next year. Great result!

Sorry guys, Fullop was outstanding today, but that one game doesn't make him a great keeper, he still has area's of his game he needs to work on & improve.
But fair play he was superb today.

Fulop excellent first half.
Everyone excellent second half.
But for me, the best thing about it was , that after we went 1-0 up, we still kept attacking and pressing - not just trying to shut up shop. Great to see

Martus - that shot he put over the bar you refer to was deflected, the re-adjustment to counter the change in direction was sheer class, the fact he got any hand on it was not luck but absolute skill! Infact he did that twice today with deflections! You will be hard pressed to find a better goalkeeping performance in the world this weekend! Bullard is class, bywater must be sick of the sight of him, a great performance all round, I'm very impressed with Edwards, we have to keep this team together for next season, a mix of jm and rk signings that can fulfil the potential seen in them under the stewardship of Paul jewell, we have two talented strikers in Scotland and priskin but they lack the required consistency. That I feel will be addressed. I think a season long loan for Bullard under the same terms as now is best for all parties and a very real possibility.

at half time must admit thought we would do wel to hang on to a point, best game Martin Fulop has played, excellent and fuly deserves motm as we could easily have been 3 down at HT, but as the game progressed we look the liklier winners and so nice to see a midfielder shoot from over 25 yards, well done Jimmy Bullard, really hope we can get him on a permanent signing next year. The only downside is th result helped Norwich whose poor draw has turned out to be a good result with others in the top 6 losing!

What a douche! I think we did deserve to win 0-2 , they had chances to score lots but weren't good enough. We scored 2 quality goals, therefore we deserved it. I hope that puts paid to all the complaints about our number 1 goalkeeper, something tells me the 6"0 Murphy wouldnt have saved wittingham's free kick, superb! I like how when first we were level, we didn't settle for it, we went for the win, then we were 1 up we went for number 2. Sorry to mention the k word but that is very different from the keane days.

I just finished watching the game on tape delay here in the States. I feared the worst after the first half performance, but we were great in the second half. Fulop was immense and Jimmy is class and always will be.

I will be in the UK next week, so will be attending the Leeds game. My American wife will be in tow for her very first live football match. Let's hope Town and the traveling blue army can do me proud. See you all next week!

Errrrrrr Hollywoodginge, maybe a bit over the top. Sure it took a deflection but he could still get a better hand to it, it hit the bottom of his hand and was lucky. Im not saying he did well, he did some good saves and was quick to get up and save save them, but he still looked dodgy.

Fulop made up for some poor goalkeeping in previous games, by putting in a fine performance today...he owed us and with a kick up the arse from us doubters gave Town the platform to get a fine win. Great strikes from Jimmy B, as a previous posted stated the Portsmouth game in reverse. Onwards and upwards...win or lose, it's fun again.

HES BIG AND HE'LL MAKE YA LAUGH!
JIM BULLARD BULLARD!

martus, what game where you watching? fulop looked unbeatable toady, even the mistakes he made (not clearing the danger with a good fist. (anyone?)) he made himself big and stopped the second AS ANY PLAYER ON THE PITCH SHOULD DO! the secret to success in football always has been and will be the second ball, which fulop did superbly today. not gonna bleet about the result as last week blah blah blah, just know that karma has a way of re-paying or kicking you in the ass.

Someone has already mentioned that it was like the Portsmouth result but in reverse. I would also add that the QPR game felt the same way. I really couldn't understand how we walked away from that game being beaten 2-0. To be promotion chasers we need to get results from the games we dominate AND snatch a few like this.

Sorry Mr Burton, your "goal" was offside. Only just offside, but this was pretty clear on TV. Have you looked at the evidence before commenting? I'd be a bit unhappy to lose that match by 2-0 in your shoes, but in fact, that's what happened! And in the end, I didn't even feel we had robbed you (that much). COYB!

Excellent result and Burton obviously saw a different 'goal' than the rest of the country! Most definitely offside sir.

As for Fulop, yes he had an excellent game and his shot stopping was class BUT he still flaps at crosses considering his size and height.

Thought the club had a goalkeeping coach, if so then he is not doing his job properly. He needs to work on Fulops handling and coming for crosses

Still 3 points and that is all that matters at this stage of the season.

Fancy 4 points from Reading and Leeds!

Cardiff must hate playing us, we are their bogey team how we used to be QPR's.

From the goalkeeper to defence, Defence to midfield, From Midfield to the strikers we were class tonight once we got going. Fulop is a good keeper he was superb last night. He kept us in the game. It's a great 3 points I would be delighted to get 4 points from the next two games. Also thought Lee Martin was really sharp as well showing he is a talented footballer. Sign up Jimmy!!

I got bladderd last night and it was 3am until I knew the result and saw the goals....a sore head....but I would happily let Mr Bullard dip the Misses & the goalie Fulop....one for the future...as good as super Cooper....and that is a compliment.
Hats off to youtube.

Its funny how Jewells win rate is the same as Keanes 45%

yet we are playing with confidence and playing some great football and as a fan you go in to games thinking we can win this instead of we have no chance.

the future of Town looks so much brighter

Let's not get carried away, we got played off the park in the first half - but after a PJ bollocking at half time they pushed the Mids to support a helpless Scotland (who looked awful) and get some more time on the ball.

The Goal came after some good territorial position (indeed we had Cardiff pinned for most the 2nd Half) The last 20 mins is worth the accolades though, playing without fear (other than a lashing from PJ again) seemed to be a different team.

Fulop, Brilliant. Both CB's are good enough to get us out of the Championship. Thought Norris and Leadbitter disappointing although Grant did get some good challenges in and Norris ran and closed down well at time. Not Wickham's best game but ooozes quality and his strength is shocking for his age. Not wanting to come off was absolutely awesome - especially as PJ greeted him off the pitch and the two shook hands to acknowledge a good game and good decision.

Played better and lost, and recently too, so Well Done all.

Scotland has to go! Not good enough at the moment. Played the role well for the Swans and the welcome for him back IMO.

Well done JB great shot and goal.

Loving the comment from Bluelady - Jb your a legend!! Interviews like a naughty school kid, love him!

After the game and he was being interviewed i found myself thinking .... What gem of a comment is he going to come out with next. The guy is an utter star on and off the field.

As much as i realise he is on big wages i'd love to see him here on a permanent basis. You can see his class on the field but i bet what he brings to the camp behind the scenes is just as invaluable.

Thank you to Paul Jewell for the stroke of genius that was bringing him to our club : - )))
