Jewell: Better Side in the First Half But Didn't Threaten Enough
Jewell: Better Side in the First Half But Didn't Threaten Enough
Tuesday, 22nd Feb 2011 23:07

Town boss Paul Jewell felt his side were the better team in the first half at QPR but failed to test home keeper Paddy Kenny enough and gave away poor second half goals. Goals from Clint Hill and Heidar Helguson saw the league leaders to a 2-0 win at Loftus Road

Jewell said: “I thought in the first half we were by far the better team. It was a bit similar to Saturday, a lot of good football but just lacking that killer instinct.

“I can’t fault the players’ effort, it was terrific, but we’re just lacking that little bit in both boxes, that desire. Certainly going forward - do we want to score enough goals? Do we want it badly enough when it goes in the box, because there are plenty of balls going in the box.”

The Blues boss says he wants his side to be coming to places like Loftus Road believing that they can win: “I’m not here to make up the numbers. I want us to be able to come to the league leaders and be able to beat them.

“We’ve had an indifferent season so far. Since I’ve been here the players have shown really good desire. I’m not questioning the desire but I’m just thinking that when it really matters have we got enough people who are going to go that extra yard to get a cut eye or one in the teeth to score a goal?

“And at the other end I’m disappointed in the manner of the goals, especially the first one, which changed the game.”

Jewell says he’s finding out more about his players with every match: “I learn about them every day and the results will tell you that we’ve got 14 points out of eight games, which isn’t bad form.

“We’ve lost to the league leaders here, but we want a mentality at the club where we want to be the league leaders, that’s our eventual goal.

“We don’t want to come here and think ‘We only got beaten 1-0 or 2-0’. We don’t want that, we don’t want that mentality, we want a winning mentality.

“The players’ efforts are not in question, and at times tonight we played some lovely football tonight, passed the ball really well. The only thing is we don’t work the goalkeeper enough.”

QPR boss Neil Warnock felt his side improved as the evening wore on: “I thought we were a lot better in the second half. I didn’t think we were bad after the first 15 minutes.

“They’ve nothing to lose really, nothing to play for, nothing to lose and they’ve had some great results and you could see the confidence they’ve got.

“I was pleased that even though we were under the cosh in that first 15 minutes they didn’t really test the goalkeeper and that was their best period.

“After that we sorted it out, we asked Wayne Routledge to do a certain job for us and he worked for the team and I’m really pleased with him.

“I thought in the second half when we got together at half-time we sorted it out and were on the front foot and largely dominated the second half. I thought we were a lot better really and got the goals.”

Stand corrected about Delaney and McAuley, However do the majority feel that they are the players to get us out of this division and are they the men to keep us in the prem?

Would have throught that Jewell would be insiting that we offer better contracts if they are so important to the club and will be the back bone of the side.

Deffinately need a good striker, Priskin for me is a ''Taxi'' job. goals per chances are awful, and he awareness of players with better chance of scoring is poor.

Waornock quoted after last nights game on "QPRmad" website, "On his team's overall display, he added: "We were a lot better in the second half. Ipswich haven't really got anything to play for and nothing to lose, they have had some great results and looked confident.

"But we sorted it out at half-time, largely dominated the second half and got the goals."

That's how other sides see us, useful but going nowhere.

We need inventive players, players who can create and anticipate chances.

Scotland & Priskin cannot do this. Bullard was hamppered by where he was played and the rest of the midfield are average players.

I hope PJ sees this problem and addresses it in the close season or it seriously will be a struggle again next season.

There is improvement in the overall play but the standard and quality is still not there.

Not a bad performance against a top of the table side. Still very encouraged with what I have seen since Jewell took over. Onwards !!!!

Totally agree with StowTractorBoy regarding Flapper Fulop.I've lost count of how many times he has cost us goals this season.I also thought that that Brian Murphy didn't deserve to lose his place in the Summer to an inferior goalkeeper who cost us an awful amount of money. This is not based on his performances for the Town as when ever I have seen him play he has always been the same totally unconvincing. Please get fit soon Murph.

Nice post BlueBoots, I enjoyed reading that!

Its two tough games in 4 days. Its no surprise we faded well into the second half.
Come saturday the lads will be fresh again.

Its hard to be too critical when the players have been playing so well recently. Add in a few injuries (O Connor, Norris & now Healy), new players (Druary, Bullard & Martin) and games comming thick and fast.

Any defeat has to go down as a disappointment - whether it be football, rugby, darts or snooker! However, this result was no surprise. We are not in the same class as QPR unfortunately, nor will we be able to compete with the better sides until a) we play and concentrate for 90+ minutes b) learn not to give away daft goals c) sign a decent striker; having more than just two senior strikers on the books.

That said, the standard of football seems to be improving, but as even Jewell admits nothing in this game for lovely possession football. We need that cutting edge and hopefully Jewell will be addressing the flaws over the coming months so we can push next year. Of course it will be up to ME/Clegg to ensure he has the necessary resources.

cant complain about this result, qpr are a very good team with the right balance of creativity(taarabt etc), bite at the back(derry, fitz hall) and ability to finish off their chances. I agree with the comments about scotland not being good enough on his own up top, but i think when he's played with another striker he's looked more dangerous. I just think we should carry on this season the way it is, get a bit of team spirit by trying to push up the table a bit and playing the same team week in week out. Like warnock said i bet jewell already has half an eye on next season. As much as i'd love to see the town back in the prem next season, i dont think we're strong enough as a unit and another season of developing would do us good; think how good wickham will be, and with added signings...

Line-up against pompey should be:
FULOP (its a shame murphy's injured because he deseves a chance after fulops performance)

EDWARDS MACAULEY DELANEY KENNEDY

BULLARD

LEADBITTER NORRIS

WICKHAM PRISKIN MARTIN
