Jewell Looking to Add Hamilton to Scouting Staff
Jewell Looking to Add Hamilton to Scouting Staff
Wednesday, 16th Feb 2011 22:48

Town boss Paul Jewell is understood to want to add his former Wigan and Derby chief scout David Hamilton to his Portman Road staff. Hamilton was until recently working as chief scout at Walsall, having been appointed by Blues assistant boss Chris Hutchings during his time as manager at the Bescot Stadium.

Speaking on Monday, Jewell confirmed that he would be looking to shake up the club’s scouting set-up: “I want to add to it, it’s something we need to add to and something which is ongoing.

“We’re always, always trying to improve. Our scouts are looking at 20 games a week to try and improve our squad. I’m happy with the squad but I’m trying to improve it to give more competition.”

Hamilton, 50, joined Jewell’s Wigan staff in 2002, having been a player alongside the Town manager during his time at Springfield Park.

The Latics’ first ever full-time chief scout, the South Shields-born former midfielder was the man responsible for bringing Jimmy Bullard and Antonio Valencia to the JJB Stadium, the Honduran eventually moving on to Manchester United for £16 million in June 2009.

Hamilton was reunited with the new Blues boss and Hutchings at Derby in 2007 but was sacked by Nigel Clough shortly after he took over at Pride Park, along with another Jewell appointment, general manager Bill Green, who was recently appointed chief scout at Leicester. Hamilton subsequently joined Hutchings at Walsall in June 2009 but left in the wake of the new Town assistant manager's January sacking.

A player with Sunderland, Blackburn, Cardiff (loan), Chester and Burnley in addition to Wigan, Hamilton won England youth caps playing under Brian Clough as a youngster. He has also been youth coach, assistant manager and caretaker-manager at Rochdale, assistant manager and caretaker-manager at Great Harwood Town and had coaching roles at Accrington Stanley and Preston North End.

Steve McCall has been Town's chief scout since the beginning of the Jim Magilton era, taking over from Colin Suggett, having previously been reserve team coach, while international scout Simon Hunt was released by the club in June 2009, chief executive Simon Clegg citing the expense of retaining someone in that role.

for all of us who don't really know who is and isn't a good scout in the game, i believe from memory, and maybe wrong, that David Hamilton's judging player potential and judging player ability are very good on FM11

Football Manager usually predicts most things in football (i.e. Jewell coming to Town, Pires going to Villa), so I would definately take its advice on this!! Lol. Sounds like he would be a wise appointment given money to invest in players!

I've thought for a long time that our scouting network had been too non-existant. Welcome aboard, unearth some gems for us.

Off topic I know, but what happened about the Beye signing of yesterday ?

Brilliant news that Jewell is bringing in a proven scout. Ipswich must start to buy cheap and sell expensive again, rather than the other way round! It felt under the last regime that we had no scouting network at all, and that nearly everyone we signed was someone Keane knew personally.

thats why clegg thought it was too expensive as keane would only by people he knew or loan sunderland ressies, when i think about things i wonder if keane and quinn had a back hander agreement. Oops i might be going court for that comment lol

To add to that bedsitfc...
FACT, the only reason Keane brought Healy to the club is because Cork (Keanes hometown) were struggling with cash and about to go under so along came Roy Keane to bail them out!
The guy was an absoulute clown!
We are all seeing better football and exiting games which he couldnt muster up! PJ IS A LEDGE! btw... Hamilton is awsome on FM11 sign him up!

timmy2guns:

In my FM11 game Keane almost got Town relegated and was sacked at the end of the 2010/2011 season, he sold Wickham for a paltry 3mil to Blackburn before he left.
I gave him a bit of stick over the transfer and now we are enemies! hehehe.
Town have since appointed Poyet as manager. Jewell is manager of Hull City and doing well!
