Beattie Hits Out at Barnsley Cheers
Beattie Hits Out at Barnsley Cheers
Monday, 15th Nov 2010 15:32

Town legend Kevin Beattie has hit out at fans who cheered Barnsley's players each time they touched the ball during a period in the second half of the Blues’ 3-1 defeat to the Tykes. The former England defender said he’d never seen anything like it in his time in football.

Beattie felt it did the Town players no favours: “I didn‘t appreciate what I heard. In fact I was disgusted. Hearing the opposition being cheered would have put our lads’ heads down and affected their concentration.

“If I’d been out there I would have confronted them and said ‘Lift us, don’t knock us down’. OK, the side might not have been playing well, but fans should not do that. I’ve never heard anything like at any ground or any match I’ve played in or witnessed.”

The former central defender added: “You should never cheer the opposition. True fans keep behind their team and do their bit to try and get them to improve.”

Totally agree with 'The Beat' ......I was in the Sir Bobby Robson Lower and a number of 'Supporters' were participating in it - I was DISGUSTED by it....In 35 years of going to Portman Road I have never heard anything like it...It was Embarassing.....to those involved my message is GET BEHIND OUR TEAM...if you want to Boo do it at the end but while the game is on we should support the boys and give them everything we have got....COYB!!!!!

Agree with everyone on here who is against us booing the players, after all it isn't them who pick the starting line up and the tactics.

Having said that, I think that some very difficult times are ahead if things don't change. If results worsen or stay similar as much as I would want Keane out I just don't see the board getting rid of him. Unfortunately it may result in some fans deciding to voice their opinions even more at games e.g. banners, chants etc.

I hope it doesn't come to it because I don't want my beloved club to become a laughing stock but thats how things seem to be going at the moment.

Spot on TJ.

It was either tear your hair out, or find something to cheer about and for a few moments most people cheered some decent passing.

So can you only complain about a meal after you've eaten it etc etc................
Utter tosh Football is supposed to be in the entertainment Business so you pay your money and if you don't get your moneys worth you should be able to vent your feelings.

It could be worse than a bit of ironic cheering, people will stay away from games if the standard of football does not improve.

We must accept that Supporters come in all shades, from those that will pay their money whatever cr*p is served up, to those that always look out for ITFC results but only attend occasional matches.

Face it our support is awful! Thers never any noise coming out of PR. Well one stand makes a bit of noise but thats only when were winning and is still pretty poor tbh!!!! So as teams regually sing when they come to Ipswich, Our support is really S..t !!!!!!! :/

Hamster153, what is there at PR to make noise about, when i go I'm worried if i'll see a 'ok' team or the normal dross. I would love to sing and chant but Keane isn't allowing it to happen with his strange team selections and tactic's. Even when town are wining it's not through good football. F ing hell we have a hell of a squad of players and should be coasting this season but its a constant struggle under the inept manager.

TJ- fine words , totally agree

Let's get one thing straight, there is a world of difference between the ironic cheering of Barnsley's passing and booing your own team. Whilst I have little doubt that both are counter productive, booing only serves to show dissatisfaction and has no ulterior purpose. Ironic cheering is a clear message, outlining exactly what we expect from our team. I have never booed players wearing a town shirt, but I am feel I am wholly entitled to send a message to a manager who has little clue about tactics, team selection, man management or the ethos that made our club great.

Despite the vitriol coming from the pro-Keane brigade for so long, many of us have remained silent both putting up and shutting up. Our tolerance can only be stretched so far. We have put up with utter dross for too long. No more.

If nothing else, the last few performances have served to change the minds of the more sensible Keane supporters such as Dobbie73 have been pushed over the edge. They appreciate decent football as much as the next man as having given RK the benefit of the doubt for so long, can stomach no more. I admire your staying power, but hope that you can now see that dislike of Roy Keane certainly doesn't translate as disrespect for our great club. Again, the two things are very different.

The tide has turned and the 150 odd posts in response to Keane's post match interview show that the majority is now against his bland brand of hoof ball.

Kevin Beattie - very, very surprised if you did actually pass those comments.
IF so would you have felt the same if you had paid 30+ odd quid to watch that rubbish ??????

Like I've said many times before - any problems at PR it's always the fans fault - never the Manager, Players, etc;

The people referred to booed, jeered and applauded Barnsley's passing because they CARE about our club winning and being successful - the rest will smile, continue to cough up, and be prepared to accept whatever.
And believe me there are many more of these people than there ever should be - maybe that's why we are such a soft touch of a club !!.
And yes CHELSEA fans booed there team off - and where are they in the League ??????????????? - is it really a crime that we did likewise after that rot ??

Absolutely hate to say it - but time to vote with the feet after after many, many great times.

We've been fed a diet of attractive passing football over a number of decades but there's been a serious famine of that at PR in recent years. Struggling to remember the last time we destroyed a team the 'Ipswich Way'.

Saturday was the final straw for many who up until then had been reasonably patient and were prepared to give the benefit of doubt. The sarcastic oleing was a clearly a protest (& a very sizable one at that) about the style of football being dished up at the moment. Looks like a load of fence sitters have finally climbed down and want some feeding.

The cheering of Barnsley only lasted a few seconds and seemed to be ironic rather than aimed at the ITFC players on the pitch. It was as if to say this is how we would like ITFC to play. I think that was better than booing players everytime they made an error. I actually dont think there was that much booing Saturday, only a bit at half and full-time, the main amount aimed at Keane when he made the ridiculous decision to sub Priskin. I have seen and heard a lot worse at other grounds throughout the years, with fans really getting at their own team. Yes the atmosphere at Portman Road is poor right now, but we have had precious little to cheer and up until Saturday have not turned against club at all.
As for it effecting the younger players such as Eastman, I think he being played out of position and getting skinned by left wingers each game will harm his confidence a lot more than his fans ironically cheering the opposition passing the ball. Booing him will hurt but to be honest apart from a couple of times late on against Derby the fans have been behind him.
All this story is doing is deflecting away from the real issue that the current tactics are not working and need to be changed. If not things will get worse.

hamster153 - another one who will always be satisfied as long as a football is kicked at PR - whatever the level or standard.

And of course all the problems are because we don't make enough noise - silly me should have realised that before. Why did I ever think it was the fault of people who are paid mega bucks to bring us success i.e. Chief Exec, Manager, Players etc; - learning all the time..........................

Seen it before with Town and will see it again. The Beat's a legend but he's wrong that this is a new thing. Anybody remember being relegated at Sheffield Weds a few years back?

Last game I went to was the 4-0 home defeat to Newcastle, Reason the way the fans are always having a go at the team instead of getting behind them, even before Keane 1st Game fans wanted him out.
I now watch a local side who are in Division 1 and the fans get behind the team great atmosphie

Completely agree with the Beat. For as long as Keane is the manager I'll give him my full backing.

He may have been a quality player,(and I watched him as a kid), but in recent years, Beattie has lurched from one personal crisis to another, and has relied on the benevolence of Suffolk people to bail him out time and time again.

Any respect that I may have had for him has long departed, as have his marbles if his inane ramblings on radio Suffolk are anything to go by.

If he's on radio suffolk after a game, the car radio goes straight on to 5 live, as I cannot put up with his sycophantic prattle !

And whilst I didn't join in with the ole's, I didn't find them offensive either. On the contrary, it actually lightened an otherwise thoroughly depressing afternoon !

Before I start, I have neither been pro keane or anti keane but a supporter of Ipswich Town FC and wished him every success. However I truly cannot see wher Roy can take the team from here. As a bunch of fans we are renowned for our patience with managers, following the events of Saturday I feel Roys time has come to an end and he should do the honourable thing and walk. With reference to the actual story whilst I do not condone the booing or ironic cheering I can understand why some of the fans reverted to this out of pure frustration of the type of football we have witnessed in recent years.

Oh get off your high horse the lot of you.
Totally missing the point if you ask me.
People were not cheering Barnsley's goal's were they ?
They were ironically cheering decent passing - something WE used to do.
I'll tell you what disgusts me - 95% of the home crowd who sit in silence
for 90 minutes every week not a few people doing some ironic cheering for
30 seconds at one match ! "

Well said Beat! Disgraceful; regardless of the performance - there's just no excuse. We've seen it before though haven't we over the last ten years when so called fans gleefully celebrated Wimbledon and Stoke's 4th goals in 1-4 home defeats?! Shocking!

Barhamblue added 22:11 - Nov 15
The bottom line is that the majority of the lower sir Bobby (north stand) cheered for Barnsley. You know who you are and should come forward and apologise for your disgusting behaviour. I bet half the posts on here are lower north!

Sir Bobby must have been turning in his grave!

For hells sake get behind the manager, whoever it is and support our team.

It is disgusting that certain fans booed. I suppose they have a right too, especially with the price of tickets to expect better. However i do not agree with turning on your team unless under exceptional circumstances such as 6-0 down or on a 10 game losing streak etc...
