Beattie Hits Out at Barnsley Cheers
Beattie Hits Out at Barnsley Cheers
Monday, 15th Nov 2010 15:32

Town legend Kevin Beattie has hit out at fans who cheered Barnsley's players each time they touched the ball during a period in the second half of the Blues’ 3-1 defeat to the Tykes. The former England defender said he’d never seen anything like it in his time in football.

Beattie felt it did the Town players no favours: “I didn‘t appreciate what I heard. In fact I was disgusted. Hearing the opposition being cheered would have put our lads’ heads down and affected their concentration.

“If I’d been out there I would have confronted them and said ‘Lift us, don’t knock us down’. OK, the side might not have been playing well, but fans should not do that. I’ve never heard anything like at any ground or any match I’ve played in or witnessed.”

The former central defender added: “You should never cheer the opposition. True fans keep behind their team and do their bit to try and get them to improve.”

Nonsense, we were 3 down at the time and it finished 1-3. If we had cheered Barnsley from the off we might have won the game

100% agree with you Beatie. It was appalling. Those who cheered Barnsley should be ashamed. I was argueing with them in lower Brittania and the mind set of those who did needs to be questioned. If people want to boo at the final whistle thats up to them but during the game is not the Ipswich way.

I'm proud to say that I didn't cheer the opposition or boo the lads! However, had I been within ear shot of Keane he would definately have felt my wrath! Saturday was an expensive joke... At the expense of club, players and supporters who wasted their money watching that rubbish!
HOWEVER... I do see the irony of the cheers for the passes they completed and I am sure it was aimed at Keane becuse his tactics and stubborn approach with players being started out of position played right into their game plan!!!
We looked naive and were humiliated at home - Poor Eastman at right back... good god, any confidene the lad had must be in pieces by now!
Things need to change at our club... Sooner the better... I am dreading our next few games! I will be at Narrich and I will be screaming and cheering our lads on, but I would be lying if I said I wasn't just a little nervous! Just cannot remember a game as bad as Saturday... Any takers???
Come on you Blooooooooooooooo's!!!!!!

agree however cross i am currently i would never ever encourage that. in fact my young son said mum can we stay to boo at the end and i said NO that is not what sport is about, we support our team whatever what message is that giving the youngsters who come to watch the game ?? so we stayed and actually clapped as the lads left the pitch as did a number in our stand - not because of the performance but more of a solidarity of standing by the lads whilst others acted no better than thugs.

His eyes they shine like diamonds - They call him the king of the land - His name is Kevin Beattie with the FA Cup in his hands.

Only cheer when keane leaves !!

It all comes down to the fact we pay ggod money and need and deserve entertainment and we simply do not get any under Roy Keane. i have avidly backed him since the day he arrived but in my opinion enough is enough. he has spent millions of pounds, far more than any manager has ever been allowed with ITFC and we are no further forward. The time has come for Keane to quit, get someone in who is a real manager, and who realises that when you are 2-0 down at home to, lets be fair, a poor Championship side (no disrespect barnsley) you do not take off your top 2 strikers and replace them with a couple of kids that have yet to score this season!! The fans cheered Barnsley because we havent had anything to cheer in months! Come on Evans, get Keane out and get Poyet and Taricco from Brighton - we will play good football and have the mighty Taricco back at the club!! COYB!

I wasnt, but a hell of a lot of people were cheering. Totally agree with the Beat on this one! No matter how bad we were, or who you blame for the abysmal performance, you dont cheer the oposition. If you're not happy you can voice it in other ways!

From the sublime respectful honouring of the 2 minute silence, to the rediculous humiliation of being heralded as shameful by our greatest ever player, those who cheered should feel really silly and embarassed!

Beattie is a legend - but the reason he never witnessed anything like the booing during his time in the game is that I can never remember such a dire mess as that which we sat through on Saturday. Certainly he never had the misfortune to play in such an inept and ill-prepared team. I didn't boo and I felt desperately sorry for the kids, especially, but Saturday was simply unbelievable in many ways and the surreal cheering of the opposition was just one element of what Keane has turned our beloved club into. What a horrible, horrible mess. Last week we had Keane slagging us off, this week it's the Beat. All we're trying to do is turn up and watch a decent game of football.

If you do not like what you are seeing on the pitch dont turn up. Simple. Far better than embarrassing yourselves by booing and moaning all the time and making it an unpleasant atmosphere for those of us who will support Ipswich come rain or shine.

At the end of the day Big Kev is right. Ok we might not like the manager but that is no excuse to turn on the players. Maybe Roy could get us all on side and appoint Kev has his assistant I bet the next home game would be a sell out!!! Maybe what the players need to get the boost to push on further up the League

True players don't miss matches because they are hit by their Mrs with a frying pan and try to disguise it as a bonfire incident.

Kevin Beattie was a surperb player whose talent was wasted and has been bailed out again and again by town fans "I gonna have to sell my medal" etc etc. It's surprising he has taken this stance because on the Radio Suffolk phone in he always says "I totally agree with you" even if the views are totally different to the previous call he has "totally agreed" with.

Anything for a few quid hey Kev?

To be honest it was embarrasing, however you can understand why we are all disullusioned. No other club with the amount of money we've had would be loosing 1-3 at home to Barnsley. Any other team with that investment would be in top 6 and most likely top 2. Under both Magilton and Keane we have not been good enough and kind of makes you wonder if we will ever get out of this league again. No matter who we sign or who is in charge we still hit the post every match, are last to any loss ball, miss easy chances, give away sloppy goals, get no luck and fail to recieve any decisions from refs.
Completely annoyed now!

Oh get off your high horse the lot of you.
Totally missing the point if you ask me.
People were not cheering Barnsley's goal's were they ?
They were ironically cheering decent passing - something WE used to do.
I'll tell you what disgusts me - 95% of the home crowd who sit in silence
for 90 minutes every week not a few people doing some ironic cheering for
30 seconds at one match !

A bigot is a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices, especially one exhibiting intolerance, irrationality, and animosity toward those of differing beliefs.

I'm happy to cheer Barnsley or applaud Kris Commons when they make my team and it's manager look like tw@ts. But over 90 minutes I'll cheer and sign for the Blue Boys far more.

TJ_Tractor - well said! Until Saturday I tried to see the good in our football in every match, even when it blatantly wasn't a good game. I dutifully buy my season ticket every year, buy the occasional overpriced pint and sweaty hotdog, sing when I can, shout and swear a bit, and generally try to enjoy the game and gee the lads up.

But Saturday was just so dire, I don't think I can see any positives to take from that game. I don't like booing the players, but I think the ironic cheering was exactly that - an ironic attempt at dark humour due to the bewilderingly bad display from the boys in blue. Saturday was the first time since the dark days towards the end of Jim's tenure that I seriously asked myself "what the f*** am I doing here, spending £400 a season to watch this sh*t?" We don't have the right to expect golden football and victories all the time, but Jesus, we have the right to expect a minimum level of effort!

Don't we??

Big_Gaz - I do agree with you on Kev when he is on radio suffolk but im sure he is trying to be polite and not get into an argument! I prefer Matt Holland but Kev is an Ipswich legend!

Keaneish ,

Beattie has hit out at fans who cheered Barnsley's players each time they touched the ball during a period in the second half , not cause they were booing.

I wouldn't join in with the olays personally, but I can understand the need for some to vent their anger at the embarrassing football on show. I wasn't at the match but if it was anything like the derby performance it was embarrassing enough to get angry enough to do something silly and unsupportive in order to underline their feelings.
