Keane: We Rode Our Luck
Keane: We Rode Our Luck
Saturday, 6th Nov 2010 17:48

Town boss Roy Keane felt his side rode their luck a touch as they picked up their third away league win of the season at Sheffield United. The Blues manager was pleased with the early goal in the 2-1 victory but was disappointed that his side didn’t push on from there.

Keane said: “A good start but a pity we couldn’t build on it. The first goal is always important in any game.

"It was a tough game, a really tough game and we were under a lot of pressure, a bit like here last year, but we managed to hold on and grind out a result without being spectacular.

“But you have to take those results, you can’t try and come and overplay away from home. There were opportunities for us to be more clinical and finish the game off, but credit Sheffield United they put us under a lot of pressure.”

Keane admitted that his side had their fortunate moments: “I think we rode our luck at times today, such as when the boy had the shot and it hit the post and there were some good balls across the box. I think we rode our luck a bit, but we all need that in life and in football.

“Sheffield United have had one or two defeats like we had a few weeks ago and sometimes you just don’t get the break of the ball, which is why football can be so frustrating.”

The Town boss was pleased to see Tamás Priskin net for the fifth time this season: “It was a real poacher’s goal, in the six-yard box. We like them. If you look at all the top strikers in the world they score from six yards out.

“The second one was a good finish from Gareth, who scored here as well last year. It was a good, tough 2-1 victory. We’ll take that.”

Keane says that in addition to Tom Eastman, who suffered a hip problem in the second half, Grant Leadbitter was feeling his hamstring at the end, while David Norris is a big doubt for Tuesday’s home game against Derby with the ankle injury he suffered against Millwall.

Sheffield United boss Gary Speed was unhappy with his side’s defending: “It was disappointing and frustrating as two sloppy goals have cost us. We do a lot of work on set pieces, we knew they’ve got a long throw and we worked on it yesterday.

“We weren’t doing our jobs. We put people in positions and gave them jobs to do and they didn’t do them on the first goal.

“With the form we’re in at the moment, if you go a goal behind you have a mountain to climb. They’ve got themselves back into it through their good play and workrate, which we know they’ll always give, but then threw it away with another soft goal.

“That’s the disappointing thing, we’ve let in two soft goals which have cost us and in the current situation it’s very difficult to get back.”

Speed felt Town took their chances when they came rather than riding their luck as Keane had suggested: “I think when things happen for you you’ve got to take advantage of them and they did that.”

Great result! Well done, Priskin! Brilliant ... COYB!! Think most of us fans knew we could win this, but putting that into practice is a different thing entirely.

How good actually was priskin today? Still not convinced that he can suddenly be awesome after the woeful year he has had, fair enough he did have two decent games before this one. Good win but still don't like colback on the wing (townsend our best player on the bench?). Will be a test against good football on Tuesday, what will we use to counter that? As I fear it still won't be good football.

Don't really know how Priskin got MOM ahead of Mcauley, he was a rock at the back, carried on after being kicked in the face twice and even netted a goal. The whole back 4 had good games really, was impressed especially with young Eastman, I can see why Keane prefers him to Peters in situations where a strong full back with heading ability is needed.
Colback on the left still doesn't sit right with me though, you can tell when he's out there he wants to drift in to the centre, creating the lack of width that was evident at points during this game.
All in all a well fought 3 points, this time last year we could never of retained a lead under that sort of sustained pressure, espeically towards the end, we can push on now and get another 3 points against Derby on Tuesday.

COYB!

Great result! 3 lovely points! Although I am a bit gutted as I had £10 on 3-1 win at 26/1!!!! Hey ho, being above the budgies is worth that and more! Should be a cracking game on Tuesday so long as our midfield don't let savage under their skin.. Booking tickets first thing tomorrow for the trip to sparrow road! coyb's!

touchy arent we. but apart from unrealistic people like you mripswich the rest of of us sensible people view a players worth on his OVERALL contribution and priskin has a lot of catching up to do. but...if he keeps up his recent goalscoring feats for the rest of the season then even a hard core critic like myself may soften but lets see how he goes. back in the top 6 is good but i expect to be in the top 2 now and i do not believe that their is any thing wrong with having high expectations of my team ipswich town fc.must admit i am still concerned about this manager mr keane but i hope he proves me wrong

It's good to be ahead of Norwich (despite them getting yet another late goal) and to return to the top six, which is where we need to stay and push on from. Looking at our fixtures ahead of the Norwich match, we have Derby (H), Barnsley (H) and Hull (A) and they have Millwall (A), Reading (A) and Leed (H) so let's hope we can pull away from them a bit before the big game.

Well done to Priskin for contributing more of late. It seems like he finally has some confidence so let's stick with him.

much improved since forest game, players starting to fire. much better with two upfront, priskin will hopefully keep growing in confidence.

would be tempted with colback left back and townsend left wing though!

Nothing from Vulcher? Odd.

Well done Roy and the players for delivering 3 wins on the bounce. Any away win in this league is good, so very difficult for anyone to moan I would have thought.

bobble sorry to break the bubble but I don't think anyone made you official fan spokesman. Imo those that had continually criticised Priskin last season and at the start of this were those that rarely turned up to games and instead judged by statistics. He has always been a very intelligent runner and even last season managed to get into better positions than anybody else, pulling the defence to give others openings as well. What annoyed many so much last season was his far from brilliant shooting when he had a sighter of goal. However, anyone who knows of his time at Watford would have realised that he was suffering from low confidence and could, with more game time and a run in the side, most definitely become good. He has now shaken off a bad spell and is clearly enjoying his football again. Long may that continue and UP THE TOWN - let's get a win against Derby could be a cracker!

So wrong about priskins critics ^^^. Absolute rubbish.

Upbeat couldn't agree more! An intellegent player who needs to be in a decent footballing team to get the best from him, and the belief of those around him. Imo he will prove to be a fans favourite over the season as when on song really players some lovely football.

I just don't get how this debate can be had after Priskin has made such a good contribution over the past few weeks. Glad I don't sit near some of you fans, bloody synics.

Re Priskin - I think it is fair to say he didn't have a great season last year! BUT fair is fair - despite a number of inconsistent performances at the start of this season (probably due to being in and out of the team), Priskin has recently been superb. By all accounts MOM yesterday. I find it very difficult to believe that a small handful on here CONSTANTLY moan. Why not give some praise when it is due? A couple of weeks ago there were two posters who were almost delighted that we lost three in a row (Norwich fans?). One of those posters hasn't bothered posting in the last week or so and the other has nothing positive to say. Unbelievable.

Ipswich24 totally agree, prefer him to Livermore and not sure why he has recently been dropped, gives us much more width than Colback

Such a great feeling to win at Bramall Lane after a few lean years; none more so than the travesty of a result last year! A thoroughly deserved 3 points and a decent all round display. We were good early on and played some decent stuff; unlucky to be just a goal up. Despite the sloppy equaliser, we did well to react and go in a goal up at h-t. The second half was a real battle but 1-14 stood up to the task well and the journey home was joyous! I worry about our ability to keep hold of the ball for long periods and to kill teams off when we have the chance, but another step in the right direction and things feel a lot better than a couple of weeks ago. COYB!
