Keane: Good Result and Decent Performance
Keane: Good Result and Decent Performance
Saturday, 21st Aug 2010 17:53

Boss Roy Keane was pleased with the performance and the result as his fifth-placed Blues beat Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park. The Town manager felt Andros Townsend’s second half red card for a high boot was harsh.

Recalling last season’s corresponding fixture in which Jon Stead was harshly sent off, Keane said: “A good result, a decent performance. The big talking point, a bit like here last year, was the sending off and the first goal.

“I thought Andros was very unlucky to be sent off," the Town boss continued. "He’s not that type of player, sometimes the referee is looking to even things up. We made it hard for ourselves, but I thought we deserved it and we looked dangerous. It was a tough game.”

Keane feels his side weren’t at their best: “We could have played better today, we should have killed the game. We got involved in arguments which lifted their players and their crowd. When the game was 2-0 we should have tried to kill it off, but that will come with experience for the younger boys.”

The Blues boss says it was a risk to play Grant Leadbitter after the midfielder received a blow to the ankle in last week’s game against Burnley: “We took a gamble on it and if there’s any reaction on it tomorrow he’ll have to miss Tuesday’s game at Crewe, but it was an important game for us and he’s a big player for us, which we saw today with his goal and his overall performance.”

Keane says there is likely to be news on Jon Stead’s future before Monday with the club having accepted a bid from Bristol City, who are also on the verge of signing Bournemouth's Brett Pitman. Stead has been in talks with the Robins and other clubs this week, having previously turned down moves to Ashton Gate, Blackpool and Cardiff.

The Blues boss says Town are unlikely to appeal against Andros Townsend’s red card in the wake of the appeal against Stead's dismissal last season when an extra game was added to his suspension, but no final decision has yet been made.

Former Town manager George Burley thought his Palace team were the better side but had no complaint regarding Claude Davis’s red card: “The game hinged on one incident, but we’ve got no one to blame but ourselves.

"Overall, I thought we were the better team, I thought we passed it better. Ipswich with one up and made it difficult for us, but we were patient, passed it very well, showed some good passing movement through midfield and wide.

“Some of the younger players were exceptional, so overall I was pleased with the performance, but if you lose that discipline, as far as the sending off and the penalty are concerned, against a very good team like Ipswich, you’re going to struggle, and that was the case. There are no excuses, it was a red card and a penalty.”

Burley also had some sympathy with Andros Townsend: “For me it looked a bit harsh but I’m sure someone else would have got a better view. It was a challenge on the goalkeeper, but I thought it was a bit harsh.”

Great result today lads.

On another note has anybody noticed how the local press continue to report negative and inacurate headlines? Then when you post they refuse to place on their site! Their latest one below is so untrue' I'm sure we all heard the Keano interview
“Their player (Speroni) got up afterwards. It's amazing that! Perhaps he had the magic sponge?”

Spot on barham, if they can take any kind of negative angle they will. Rather than the headline being about a very impressive 7 points from 3 tough games with an injury hit squad, they choose to go with anything negative they can attribute to Keane.

Cracking result today, just need that striker and hopefully we will be able to kill games off instead of making it nervracking. But 7 points from 3 tough games is the start we would of dreamed off after last season.

SouperJim. Thought I was the only one, that's the reason I will never buy their paper. Anyway really encouraged by our start I have faith in Keano and Cleggy to secure a few signings this week.

Have a good week roll on tueday. Cheers........Keano

is this the same local rags that used to knock every previous manager we have had since burley? they ought to just not publish anything ITFC. From the BBC coverage and TWTD why bother with local rubbish! Keano actually sounds like he has a reasonable relationship with the guy who asks questions on BBC interviews, im guessing the same doesnt go for the local rag muppets?

A great result toady, 7 points from 3 games is a fine return, especially considering we still have a few players to come back in. However, surely we cant let Stead go before signing at least 2 strikers! If Priskin is our only fit senior striker, we could be in trouble!

Cracking start to the season eh! Superb result today, hopefully we can keep it going and just go about our business and not worry about those negative headlines, who knows maybe it's a bit of what spurs them on! BBC East don't help themselves either, was watching Sky ch 981 and no surprise but guess whose goals Look East had ready and waiting on the 6pm news...yep the Norwich goals! Nevermind, keep it going lads, and so far so good. Absolutely delighted!

Yes, A great result. Let's just wallow in the glory. We can get back to reality next week.

This was a game we could have lost but we won it seemingly with something to spare. If nothing else we should have taught ourselves that there is nothing to fear in away games.

All credit to the guys; you have made my saturday.

Fantastic

Hi ChambersM

Your post on Wednesday """"ChambersM added 18:42 - Aug 18
Not being funny if Pablo goes to palace I want him to play against us, along with garvan and wright because I want keane to see the mistakes he made by letting them go! Absolutely rediculous!""

What's the score ChambersM? Obviously the ones RK has got rid of are not as good as the ones he has kept?

Any negative comments on 2 away wins on the trot?

Yay for Barham Blue & Jim!! - and I thought it was just ME who thought the local press was negative. I recently posted something similar on the ITFC forum. I don't get it. I've just come back from Newcastle and their local press are a million miles off ours with their support for their team. It's a shame. Is the EADT Editor a Budgie???

Great result today - I've always had faith in Keane.

The reason why the so called local rag keeps putting a negative take on everything is probably because its no longer printed in Ipswich. Guess where it is printed ? Yep canary land apparantly ! Answer the question !

Great result again today, 7 pts from 9 RK is starting to turn us around and giving youngsters a chance. By the way where ARE Ipswich Elvis and the other moaners this season. If, and I mean if, we lose to Crewe on Tues I bet they resurface.

Can people clear up for me what they mean by the negative coverage of the local press? I been on the evening star/EADT websites and cant quite see any negative reports on there. I went to the game today and have gotta say that we played some really good football and quite how Burley thought that palace were the better team beats me.

Davis deserved to be sent off as he clearly pulled stead back in a goal scoring position, plus he had been pulling and pushing for the rest of the game anyway, also as he did in the game last season ( he fouled stead in the build up to his red card last season ) Shame we conceded and really Fulop should have either claimed or punched clear.

Our two centre backs had Alan Lee in their pocket more or less all game altho he was a presence, he clearly got frustrated at times, as did Garvan, who seemed to himself in all of the flash points in the game, dont really think we miss him to be honest.

Townsend was right to go for the ball, but his foot was a bit high, but Speroni got up and ran around quite freely and didn't look like he'd been up ended, all in all bit of a feisty game, but happy with the performance and the 3 points, COYB !!!! KEANO

Is it due to the fact that we claimed a great away win today and anouther 3 points that there are only 20 odd comments.Where are all the whingers ,moaners and cranks now?????
Well done to the team and well done Roy hopefully the spineless Clegg will actually do something this week and not mess around anymore of the potential signings who have come to Portman Rd all Summer only to leave you office shaking their head.COME ON CLEGGY SHOW US YOU HAVE B*LLS THIS WEEK AND GET THEM IN OR ARE YOU C*STRATED TOO??????

Super result today, well done lads. Brilliant start to the season especially as it was unexpected. It's the opposite of last season where expectations were sky high, so maybe the team can surprise a few people this season? Don't let it detract from the need to bring in players though, we still badly need those strikers if we are to compete for promotion (look at Cardiff today for an example).
