Town Sign Andros Townsend on Loan
Town Sign Andros Townsend on Loan
Thursday, 12th Aug 2010 13:23

Town have signed Tottenham left midfielder Andros Townsend on a season-long loan. TWTD first revealed the Blues' interest in the 19-year-old back in May.

Boss Roy Keane said: "He's a lad with a lot of potential. We've had good reports on him and we are delighted to have him here."

The Blues sent a representative to watch the quick winger in action in a friendly against Chelsea at Tottenham’s training ground on Wednesday. The game had been arranged to show off the clubs’ young talent to sides interested in taking their players on loan.

Townsend, who played in all three of Tottenham's games on their pre-season tour of the USA, came through the Spurs academy and went on loan to Yeovil Town at the end of the 2008/09 season, scoring one goal in 10 starts.

The 6ft tall midfielder spent the first half of last season at Leyton Orient, where former Blue Geraint Williams was then boss, netting two goals in 20 starts and six appearances.

In January the England U16 and U19 international moved on to the MK Dons, where he made eight starts and one sub appearance, scoring twice.

Will be great to have his pace and dribbling ability down the left flank. He will face arguably the best right back in the league (Tyrone Mears) on Saturday should he play, so we should get an idea of how good he is. Everything I've read suggests he's a real talent.

just a thought will we have the youngest team in the championship (although Scotland will ruin the ratio lol!)...... love it young, hungry and with a bit of experience sounds the medicine for a great season. Not quite so worried about McCormack now but still would be good........ celtic will draw him for sure if the interest is true and will no doubt pay far higher wages. However if he wants to play up front havent they just bought Murphy and are after Bellamy so he would be forced to be either a back up or to play wide which is what he hates about where he is now?

A good loan signing and for the whole season. He has pace to burn by the looks of it. That goal against Yeovil was decent but he ran the whole length of the pitch with out one tackle or challenge. He wont get that space at this level. A great back up for Civelli who still has doubts over his long term fitness. Both are effective in different ways. Luca with his crossing, passing and great technique. Great in games where we need to keep possession and build attacks. Andros for games where we have less possession and more counter attacks. Tactically these lads allow us to change game plan easily if we need it.
A great loan signing and potential permanent signing if he and Ipswich do well this season!

Nice one Keano!

Our squad is looking very promising if we get McCormack & Scotland.

I wonder if Civelli's latest setback is worse than the club have admitted so far. There has been silence ever since he picked up the knee injury in the recent friendly. RK said he'd be 10 days, but I reckon it's already been more than 2 weeks, & even if he does return to fitness soon, he's not played 90 minutes for well over a year. Therefore Andros Townsend loan makes good sense.

bluelady-seen reports coming out of Swansea that them & Burnley are the other teams interested in Scotland so will be interested to see if he is that close to signing. Hope your right though :)

I agree tom_the_blue!!!! We are definitely taking shape and Scotland/McCormack seem likely to arrive (fingers crossed). But we do need a right back with abit of nouse - why did we get rid of david wright???? Surely liam rosenior is better than peters???.......Finnan would be absolutely ideal and then we would then be a very good team!!!!!!!

apparantly the EADT said he is discussing terms but i havent seen that first hand. The sun was one national (ok so maybe not the best source!!!). Burnley may be viable as close to home but they kept their squad so not sure they will make a strong move also they first showed interest end of July so think they may have mad a bid sooner? Swansea - personally think we have a better offer than them of squad, team set up etc? hopefully he will have taken into account our results thus far!!! perhaps i am just too optimistic!!!

As N'Zogbia is a midfielder and Scotland is a striker I don't think it has any bearing at all. Anyway welcome Andros and good luck.

wigan website claims it is Burnley and Bristol City - hmm if thats the case then its definately only us v burnley with the happenings at Bristol today! For the record think its a shame Coppel has quit management.

sorry me again should do it all in one. this is a quote from EADT
"Scotland is said to be set to discuss terms - with Keane looking to add to his squad before the Burnley game against a side relegated from the Premier League last term - with the pursuit of Cardiff's Ross McCormack also believed to be gathering pace and a couple of loan deals in the offing"

Brilliant news. Some pace and width - looks to be a great signing Roy.

From feeling very worried a couple of weeks ago to being incredibly excited and optimistic about the season ahead.

If we get Scotland and McCormack then we will be there or thereabouts come the end of the season.

Can't wait for Saturday.

ah ok thanks Steve read the Bristol City link somewhere on one of the Wigan sites! Guess players do go back to their old clubs particularly if they had a good time there (swansea) so guess it depends on if they want him badly enough... Who knows its not over till the fat lady sings, so lets just hope its supper she is singing for and we havent got to wait for breakfast or lunch tomorrow :-)

yeah tractor big boy, remember Dos Santos he wasnt 'good enough' for Spurs either! they have a large youth contingency and with the new rules they have to off load some on loan to get them playing football.

On a completely unrelated subject, I think I can reveal who Sky Sports think will be in the bottom five of the Championship this season; Cardiff, Ipswich, Millwall, Scunthorpe and Watford!

They are the only Championship teams not being shown on Sky Sports Live, according to their listings. Fortunately for us and Cardiff the BBC will be showing our game against the unmentionables on November 28th and Cardiff's game against Swansea on the 7th November but no such good news for the remaining three.
