Bristol City Linked With Stead Move
Bristol City Linked With Stead Move
Friday, 23rd Jul 2010 16:33

Bristol City are reported to have made a £200,000 bid for Town striker Jon Stead. The former Sheffield United, Blackburn and Huddersfield man was amongst the eight players the Blues recently made available for transfer.

Earlier in the summer, Town had agreed a £400,000 fee with Stead’s former loan club Coventry for the 27-year-old, but the move broke down after the Sky Blues sacked manager Chris Coleman. Stead’s hometown side Huddersfield, where he started his career, have also been linked.

This morning, Town boss Roy Keane revealed that the Blues were in talks with three clubs who are interested in current squad members.

Two of those possible deals are likely to be Owen Garvan’s proposed move to Crystal Palace and Alex Bruce’s expected switch to Sheffield United, while the third could be any number of potential deals with QPR understood to be interested in Jon Walters, Swansea in Tamás Priskin and Millwall and Charlton amongst various clubs believed to be chasing Kevin Lisbie.

Meanwhile, the Blues will not be entering a reserve side in the LB Group Suffolk Premier Cup this season. Former boss Jim Magilton revived Town’s involvement in the competition in 2006, but it has often proved difficult to fit in the fixtures. The Blues won last season’s competition, beating Needham Market 4-1 in the final at Portman Road.

Before he got suspended ridicously at crystal palace, he was our best player and i never understood why we loaned him out. keep him unless we need the money. very good on his day, if we can get them days to come abit more often i see 20 goals in him

He scored 13 goals out of 41 games in his best season for us and he calls himself a striker! I dont understand why people are getting upset, he is not good enough for the first team and he is too expensive for back up = get rid!

Truesblue4Eva: Your right... if we could get those to come more often he would be a 20 goal a season man, but it isn't going to happen... I don't think he lazy, but his movement tends to be away from goal... I think he was taught once many years ago to go look for space if their isn't any and took it all a little too much to heart. It means he goes further and further back and wider, so he almost ends up as another midfielder. If he could take a leaf from Rooney book of creating space... I agree he would be excellent. why? Because Rooney pushes a defender back and back, then quickly drops deep to find the space… then deep is just a couple of yards short of the back line, with the back line pushed right back… very threatening… But let's be honest, what chance has Stead of pushing back a defensive line with the threat of his power/pace/control making the back 4 get further back as they want the time to anticipate/react to his next move?
Nope… move him on and bring in a goal scorer.

We should remember that only two players scored 20 goals in the Championship last year: Whittingham and Maynard (Chopra got 18). 13 goals in a season isn't a disgrace therefore and would make Stead worth more than £200K in my opinion. I thought for £600K he was a reasonable purchase actually.

FootballsMyLife - football might be but English isn't.
The use of 'of' when it should be 'have' ... aaagh!
Should be punishable by beheading! They'd never make that mistake again!

Good player Stead, it will be a terrible bit of business to let him go for £200,000. He's a proven performer with premiership experience. Town shouldn't listen to anything less than £500,000. Anything could happen at circus ITFC at the moment though!
