Burley Hopeful He Can Take Garvan to Palace
Burley Hopeful He Can Take Garvan to Palace
Thursday, 22nd Jul 2010 10:59

Crystal Palace boss George Burley is reported to be hoping to have completed the signing of Town midfielder Owen Garvan by the end of next week. The ex-Blues manager made a second offer for the Republic of Ireland U21 international earlier in the week, having had his initial bid rebuffed.

Having offered £100,000, the figure currently on the table is variously reported as £150,000 or £200,000. Town are understood to want £400,000 for the 22-year-old, who is contracted until the summer of 2011.

Burley confirmed his move for Garvan: “We have a number of offers in with clubs for players and loans at the moment and he is one we are very keen on.

"We have a budget for wages and transfers and originally we thought we would stick to loans and free transfers, but certain players you need to pay for.

"I'm hoping by this time next week we should have a few more in and a far clearer picture of where we are."

Garvan is one of the eight players the Blues have made available for transfer.

shame but feel its time for both itfc and garvan to part company
good passer of the ball like everyone has said but its the rest of his game that lets him down. attitude, application who knows but half the time he spends on the pitch he is invisible.
cant tackle or head the ball
a talented player but he has had so many chances to shine over the past few years and has never taken it.

DrJekyll: I think you're missing the point. Yes, Man Utd midfielders tend to work hard and are talented but that doesn't mean anything at all. What has Scholes got to do with Norris? They are different players. Both run around, one of them is a great player.

You seem to be suggesting that Garvan should go because he's lazy. Whilst I don't necessarily disagree that he can be lazy I refuse to accept that we should sell him just because of that.

As we are currently lacking anyone else with the skills Garvan has (but have two players like Leadbitter and Norris) it seems a shame to lose him.

Of course, if RK has a midfielder lined up who will offer both talent and energy then fair enough, Garvan can go.

But I think we all know that that isn't the case.

naa; I think your missing the point... it's not that Garven is lazy (Although he does appear to not put in too much effort sometimes) it's that he isn't good enough! Yes he showed lots of promise when he first got in the team from within our youth ranks, but he hasn't progressed... yes he may be able to make a decent pass, BUT only if he is given lots of time on the ball. Garven's issue is he is too slow, both physically and mentally. When we play against teams that sit off the midfielders, he looks good; when we play against teams that press (About 90% of the championship these days) he looks pants, gets caught too often and doesn't seem to have the where with all to move the ball into a position that will give him time to play his passing game. Add in he's not the best defender/coverer and what does he offer? A decent passing game in 10% of your league games… it's a real shame, as he did show promise, but he's never taken that step up and as he doesn't show lots of grit/determination/effort, he doesn't bring enough to the field to be worth a starting place… he's had ample time on the pitch to improve and get it right, but hasn't… Let's take what we can for him and move on.
I'm sorry because he did show lots of promise, but we can't live on promise and he is no longer a youngster… he may be lucky and find a team that can accommodate his talents, but I don't think it will be Ipswich, even though I love seeing home grown talent come through… Let's hope RK gives young Billy Clark a few more goes as he looked like he was showing promise at the end of last season.

Be a bargin at that price, be a sad day when he goes, our most creative player, was awesome agaist QPR at home only to be dropped next game. So Place will be playing the attrative football we used to play under Burley. My concern is who will replace him? Another Midfielder which runs around alot not much skill oh but he can tackle. Forgot we are a direct team now. Keane out

I would say I'd drive Garvan there, but the traffic is a chuffing nightmare around Selhurst way...

SiBo you are spot on.....

Just like to add.... he does not seem to be blessed with the gift of anticipation. If he don't have it now, he never will. If he had it, he would be the 1st name on RK's team sheet.

I still think Garavn is a good player, but both Jim and Roy experienced problems with him. Coincidence? Probably not.

He just hasnt progressed from the days when he looked a prospect in the Youth side. I'm afraid that despite the occasional good pass, his inability to run, tackle, haeder, track back and generally get 90 minutes mean that Keano has got him sussed.

The point that most are missing here is - firstly he was transfer listed, and secondly its a confirmed offer, not just linked rumour. Therefore, if he has to go... surely 100-200k is a complete bargain for palace! I can't believe were letting him go for that price...

Good Luck Owen, I'm sure you will get on very well under George Burley's management style. I'll be sorry to see you go, but will watch your progress with interest. Wish we played decent football at PR, but sadly we don't, so have no use for quietly intelligent players! All the best

Everyone says he is too slow but have any of you ever seen leadbitter show a real burst of pace?

Complete Madness !! Garvan is talented and has skills that the club needs . Keane has, and is continuing to destroy ITFC . I am amazed that any fan who still "believes " in this man as manager can't see what he has done and is continuing to do . It will take some time to rebuild an ITFC that a lot of us will be proud to support . Keane 's basic brute-force , unattractive football is not wanted .

kentblue - i agree the style is changing but as my post above where do you want to be???
garvan has had more chances than any other player he hasn't taken them, so imo get rid and bring someone in that wants to play for us.

Oh dear, i have a feeling we are gonna regret this move should it go through and Garvan will go on to be a decent player for palace. I'm not sure what games some of our seriously un-football minded "fans" are watching but Garvan is the only decent passer of the ball we have in the team, who cares about pace? is Xavi Alonso fast? NO, that's not his game and nor is it Garvans. I wish you luck lad maybe playing for a manager that appreciates your ability will enhance your obvious talent!

Fat Uncle, okay you got me there but i would point out he his considered a bit of a flop by a lot of Man Yoo fans.
Naa, a reasoned argument thank you. However, when i was at school, our games teacher said this to us, 90 mins in a game, 22 players on the pitch, that means that on average each player will have posession of the ball for just over four minutes, what are you doing for the other 86 minutes? You can have a massive influence on a game and yet not touch the ball once. In light of this i dont think that Garvans undoubted ability to ping a pass around is of sufficient value to the team.
