Keane Backing Goalline Technology Call
Keane Backing Goalline Technology Call
Tuesday, 29th Jun 2010 08:47

Boss Roy Keane expects football to introduce goalline technology in the years to come to prevent controversial incidents such as Frank Lampard’s ‘goal’ during England’s World Cup defeat to Germany on Sunday.

Keane said: “I’m sure technology will come into the game over the next few years. It has to because of the money involved, not just at World Cup level. At Championship or Premiership level the stakes are so high and it’s got to be looked at.

“It’s in other sports and, as much as I love the game, we’ve got to be open-minded and if something can improve the game we have to look at it. But it’s up to FIFA to sort it out.”

Keane feels that England’s players are more to blame for their early return from South Africa than manager Fabio Capello: “For everyone to keep criticising the manager I think is crazy. Six weeks ago he was a top manager and all of a sudden he’s not the man any more. It’s an amazing business we’re in.

“Capello’s a brilliant manager. The players have to look at themselves as well. Let’s not kid ourselves, they get away with murder because everyone seems to blame the manager.

Keane says speculation regarding the players’ unhappiness with Capello’s 4-4-2 formation had little to do with the weekend 4-1 thrashing: “The goals England conceded on Sunday were nothing to do with systems or getting overrun in midfield but basic defending.

“It’s a very simple game football, but when big teams lose they always look to criticise the manager or the system or the tactics. I thought it was nothing to do with that on Sunday.

“To question Capello’s crazy, he’s an absolutely brilliant manager and they are very lucky to have him and I think he should stay, 100%.”

The Blues boss wasn’t surprised at England’s poor showing and feels few of the squad performed during the domestic season: “Tell me the players from England who had a good season. Wayne Rooney had a brilliant season, but you look at the goalkeepers. David James at Portsmouth, I don’t they had great season. Robert Green, West Ham, they just about stayed up. Glen Johnson at Liverpool did OK.

“John Terry had his issues, I don’t think he had a great season, as much as Chelsea won the double, that was down to the fact that they had some world class attacking players.

“Upson, who played yesterday, from West Ham didn’t have a great season, Ashley Cole has only just come back from injury, to be fair to the boy. Steven Gerrard didn’t have a great season with Liverpool.

“I think James Milner had a good season, Gareth Barry I thought was very average for Manchester City last season, Emile Heskey scored three goals for Villa last year. So you tell me these players are world class players, but they’re not. There’s probably only Wayne, and Wayne still hasn’t done it on the world stage.”

Keane says he expects Brazil or Argentina to carry off the trophy.

Well said Keane! I love England but we are not the world beaters the press think we are, we are not technichally good enough like holland and cile who are comfortable on the ball whereas we are scared of it especially Johnson. We need change of style in the way youngsters are coached to enhance flair.

Yep good point Mr Keane - it's the players that give the performances!

Just heard a bit of RK's SKY interview on Chris Evans. All that he said was true but hindsight is a wonderful thing. Could he have predicted their form a year ago? Not based on his ITFC team last year (and this coming season, if reports are to be believed).

I really think that the John Terry business has alot to do with the England team not playing as they are capable at the world cup. They coasted through their group without any difficulty and played with a business like flair, then JT gets dumped as captain over his personal life and the England team played like they were divided and with little interest. When I hear these reports of the players being tired makes my blood boil.

Kerryblue...Why do tales of [players being tired make your blood boil? I doesn't matter how much you are paid, if the players you are up against are fresher because in general they play fewer games its a valid point. Of course there are some players in foreign sides who play in the premiership, but in general the teams that have done well dont have more than one, maybe two

I think I agree with every single word Keane said.

Rooney aside, we don't have any world class players, and it's time we stopped deluding ourselves that we're a world power and put in place the measures necessary to actually become one.

We're a nation of 50 million people, FFS! If Holland (20 million), Portugal (10 million) and Spain (40 million) can produce world class players like they're growing on trees then so can we, but it will take the courage and leadership necessary to completely overhaul the structure of youth football in this country and banish the ghost of Charles Hughes forever (never heard of him? Look him up if you want a brief guide to why we play football the way we do).

Somehow, I don't think we're going to get that from the FA. Still, at least there's Super Sunday to look forward to, right? Can't wait for Wigan v Bolton.

Well said Roy. I agree about the players need to take some of the blame. Being tired in not an excuse, most of the German side have played more games this season that the English players. Virtually every team in the competition has players that play in the Premiership and they don't seem tired.

The manager also needs to shoulder the blame. Steven Gerrard is a world class player when he plays in the position he is good at, not out on the left. Rooney is a world class player but looks useless unless played in a system where he doesn't receive world class service. It is up to the manager to get his team playing well, with pride and passion. We had 4 matches in which to deliver, Heskey didn't, the manager needs to have the balls to change it and bring in somone else who could. I not a great lover of Crouch but what must he be thinking?

I thought Keane was going to stop mouthing off about subjects unrelated to Ipswich??? Guess he changed his mind again - just like his team selections.

I think part of the problem with the current England squad stems from the number of foreign players currently residing in the Premier League. They've all got their own styles of play that they bring with them from their home countries, and the few members of the England squad that play alongside them day in day out in the PL appear to have become accustomed to said styles. It's as though we've forgotten our own style of play, hence why the team just couldn't gel together at this year's World Cup (Terry and Upson vs Germany springs to mind).

I think we should consider implementing restrictions on the number of foreign players that can be picked in the matchday squad, that way the younger English players can have more opportunities to prove themselves rather than be swept under the carpet of foreign players.

Oh, and I think Sepp Blatter should resign from FIFA. He has been holding back football as we know it by unconditionally rejecting countless calls for goalline technology to be introduced. His arguments in the past about goalline technology being too expensive and how there shouldn't be technology in football are just plain wrong. I realise that he has arranged a meeting for next month to discuss the possibility of introducing it, but it's too little too late for me. As for his so-called ‘spokesperson', Nicolas Maingot, he's just a puny little joke of a man. He's got as much charisma as Peter O'Hanraha-hanrahan from 'The Day Today'. Sack him.

Keane doesn't help himself does he. No surprise he's defending fabio, maybe he hopes this is what we say about him....well maybe he should get on here and have a look. Cos were not keane, your full of crap! And what he says about those players having not so great seasons and therefore not being world class...are you going to tell me that rooney isn't world class just because he had a bad world cup? Keep your nose out keane. Go back to disgracing your own country and get the heck out of ipswich!

Brilliant! let's take all the luck out of the game with technonlogy. Look, that's black and that's white *YAWN. Compile that with overpaid pampered footballers, what a wonderful game we'll have then. FOOTBALL HAS BEEN GOING FOR OVER A 100 YEARS WITHOUT TECHNOLOGY AND WILL CONTINUE TO THRIVE WITHOUT IT.

England arent out of the world cup because of that disallowed goal, they are out because their team is ovverated. The national team has done nothing since 1966. oh, that's right, england won the world cup because of a decision they are now calling goal-line technology for.
