West Brom's Mattock Linked Again
West Brom's Mattock Linked Again
Thursday, 24th Jun 2010 09:35

Town are being linked with a loan move for West Brom left-back Joe Mattock. The 20-year-old was mentioned in connection with the Blues last summer, prior to joining the Baggies from hometown club Leicester City for a fee of £1 million.

The England U21 international made 29 starts and five sub appearances for West Brom last season as they won promotion to the Premier League but, given his youth, may not be seen as ready for the step up and could be loaned out for 2010/11.

Mattock, 5ft 11in tall, came through the youth system at Leicester, where Town first team coach Tony Loughlan worked between 2003 and 2006, and made his senior debut as a 16-year-old in April 2007.

Having been capped by England at U15, U16, U17, U19 levels, Mattock became the second youngest player after Theo Walcott to appear for the U21s when he won the first of his five caps in a 2-1 victory over Bulgaria in November 2008.

Mattock was charged with four allegations of assault last year, claims he denies, with a trial set for August 2nd.

Meanwhile, former Town youth product Antonio Murray has returned to Histon after a disappointing spell with Cambridge United, while another ex-academy player, midfielder Adam Miller, has moved to the Abbey Stadium from Gillingham after being released by the Gills.

South African centre-half Justin Miller, a former Town reserves skipper, has signed for Rushden and Diamonds after leaving Witts University in his homeland.

Ex-Town loanee Giovani Dos Santos has been linked with a move from Spurs to Serie A Genoa.

Elsewhere, Town owner and chairman Marcus Evans is reported to be switching his ticketing business to Dublin from its current London base. Evans has been chosen as the Irish Olympic Committee’s official tour operator for the 2012 Olympics, although this is yet to be ratified by the IOC or London 2012.

If commenters could avoid speculation regarding the court case it would be appreciated.

Would rather make permanent signings, this sounds like a season long loan if anything. Pure speculation anyway.

Wait for his personal issues to be resolved if we were to make a move anyway.

Are we planning to overlook Shane O'Connor then - or lining Shane up as LM if Civelli doesn't quite make it!

Filipe Teixeira has been release by West Brom, he is a very good midfielder at Championship level, he has impressed me whenever he's played against us, sign him up Keano!!!

I am god, Civelli will not play here in the first team for long if at all. That was a very serious injury.

Shame we did not see the best of him. I hope that I am wrong.

Not sure why Keane would even need to consider a LB as Smith and O'Connor would now seem to fit the bill.

Please Keano don't make the same mistake that you made with David Wright and buy/loan another full back when a perfectly good (pair) already exist.

I am so glad our "messiah" has wrapped up all his incoming transfer business before pre-season like he said he would.

I don't see the sense in bringing anyone in on loan who would stand in the way of O'Connor's development. Having said this, I'm sure it's just tabloid speculation anyway.

Phil - The temptation to speculate on the court case is now overpowering... ;o)

In playing terms, JM is a good young left back and we could do a lot worse. That said, I'm not overly sold on the season long loan idea, unless there is an opportunity to sign him permanently if he does well?

Still no news on the transfer front then.

Maybe we will pick someone up on the Dutch tour, like we did last year on the Ireland tour, only not so s t

i saw him on the tv against bristol city and haynes made him look 1/10 . He was very very very poor. I did think before that match he was a decent promising player but after that no thanks. made to look a slow chump.

Hope this doesn't count as speculation re the trial Phil.

It just struck me that anyone suspected of 4 assaults is bound to appeal to keane.

As it stands, probably one of the better players we've been linked with but would prefer us to sign full backs on a permanent basis seeing as we have so few and so you don't want a recall leaving you short. Not sure on the season long loan rules..as to whether they can't be call back?

A year ago I really wanted us to get Mattock, a highly-rated young defender. To think we paid almost as much for Delaney as a left-back (fortunately he came good at centre back when he finally got a chance there).

Unless a young player is exceptional or the loan is with a view to a permanent move, I don't really want to loan young players. We develop them (at the expense of our own young players) and then they leave at the end. Let's sign our own decent youngsters on permanent contracts!

Another day passes with no signings for Ipswich. Meanwhile Scunthorpe sign Grant, Swansea sign Donnolly, Norwich sign Surman, QPR sign Derry, Coventry sign McSheffrey...

Mark above is correct with one thing. Other championship clubs seem to be signing players on a daily basis with the exception of ____________ Fill in the blank !!!!

Mattock would be an OK signing. England U21 and experience only at 20.
With Scunthorpe having signed Bobby Grant they are looking for they next goalscorer find and Keano should find Gary Hooper finally. It's too late soon.
