Keane: Pre-Season Priorities Fitness and a Settled Side
Keane: Pre-Season Priorities Fitness and a Settled Side
Tuesday, 22nd Jun 2010 16:35

Town manager Roy Keane says his priorities during pre-season will be his players’ fitness and getting a settled side. The Blues boss has revealed that there will be no reprise of last summer’s visit to Colchester Garrison or the warm weather training camp in Portugal.

Keane told the club site: "Last year we did a lot of travelling and we pushed the players a lot. We have decided not to go to Portugal this year, there will be no army barracks either.

"The focus of our pre-season will be around the training ground. We've got some good games and are looking at other fixtures. They are well spread out, but we don't want to get bogged down by games.

"We had a lot of changes during pre-season last year. Our priority this time is getting players fit and getting a settled side, particularly the back four."

Town, who start pre-season training next Monday, have already confirmed friendlies at Southend on Friday 9th July, against PSV in Eindhoven on Saturday 17th July, while West Ham are at Portman Road on Saturday 31st July, and a Spurs XI are in Suffolk on Tuesday 3rd August.

The Blues are likely to play two more Dutch sides as part of a tour of Holland.

Best you be signing a couple of full backs fairly sharpish then Mr Keane if you want a settled back four.

The experience gained at the World Cup will surely mean a regular spot for Tommy Smith then all he needs is a right back

"getting a settled side" - the man's a genius! Sounds like he is learning on the job!

Jamie Peters should be are regular right back, we do need back up in that position though, I also agree about Tommy Smith and we have Shane O'connor obviously !!

Smith may be a good player - but he isn't a full-back

Smith is a Centre-Back, not a Full-Back.

Same settled side strategy as last year then you numpty. Lets build our side to our strengths and let the opposition worry about us, not chop and change it every week to try and salvage a draw against some very average oppoments.

Wish you luck before you're sacked at the end of september.

Oh dear - yet again more nagative comments from some.

However, I must agree that it's impossible to have a settled side, if we haven't actually sorted out our signings!

"dduuurrrrrr roy keane is da worstest manaja eva, i no lets dissagree wiv evryfink he sez durrrrrr".

If only TWTD had an ignore list on these news comments, then I could filter out all you numpties who never have a single constructive word to say and are incapable of forming an opinion that a small child couldn't come up with, yet still feel the need to post this complete chaff ALL the time.

A week away from pre-season training and we haven't signed one of the five players we are looking for! I totally agree we need a settled side during the season, but it is fine to experiment in pre-season. Let's build a solid 11 rather than loads of competing squad players resulting in ever-changing line ups next season. Quality not quantity please!

Even you keane apologists must recognise the ridiculousness of that statement unless of course all his signings come pretty sharpish. Also why has he all of a sudden realised you need a settled side...last seasons, one bad game and your out, rotation rubbish needs to be gone this year or it'll be another turgid and poor campaign.

A settled side?!!...errr,that's down to you isn't it Roy?

btw..glad you've given the army assault course a miss..try some training that involves using a bloody football.

So, according to our "messiah", we are going to have a settled and fit back four this season. Does he even know what the word means??? I think Keane has lost the plot as I can't see him doing that. If Keane was quoted as saying he could count to 10 backwards, I am sure some of the blind pro-Keano's on her would be cheering !!!!! Not a bloody clue !!!!

Fair play to Tommy Smith for what New Zealand are doing over in South Africa but I really don't think that he is the answer to us gaining a sensible settled back four. As mentioned by others he prefers to play as centre back and those two positions are about the only certainty in our side (Delaney and McCauley).

Will probably do one more season with us and then leave.

Lets face it whatever Keano says some of you will ultra anaylise and twist it into a negative.

I am in no way a member of the "Keane out brigade." However this is odd as i swear he said earlier in the summer that his main priority was to bring in some players before pre-season training begins?
Its always something that annoys with this club, whoever the manager is that we always seem to be last into the transfer market! Every summer we hear the line "i want players with the right character" while other clubs are bringing in quality. Please get a move on and sign someone!

all these comments slagging him off- whats the bloke meant to say? give the guy a break. i dont understand why some of you are so bitter? sure last season fell well below expectation but he's a young manager learning the trade. we're all human, we all make mistakes. if your gonna get all negative before the season has even started, bugger off up the road!

talking of tommy smith, we could do worse than adopting new zealand's back 3 system with the current personnel. both jaime peters and shane o'connor seem like they will suit wing back far better than conventional full backs in a 4-4-2

Its about time you earn your money and sign some players? It will be panic buying if we are not careful wasting more money on dufff players. If we offer the players we are looking to sign a great deal they may just come to town.

Keane good at talking the talk,cr*p at walking the managerial walk.

blue_shoes- I think fans are generally worried that we are going nowhere and nothing seems to be changing ie signing new players, same crappy comments week in week out. Im sure all us town fans have had enough of the talk and wanna see action something needs to change and it may come end of september who knows? Keane has got to prove to everybody at the club he is the man to take us forward but i think the faith in him has been reduced for lots of reasons.
