Town Again Linked With Move for Chopra
Town Again Linked With Move for Chopra
Monday, 24th May 2010 16:52

Town boss Roy Keane is reported to have made Cardiff City a £3 million offer for striker Michael Chopra, in the wake of the Bluebirds’ failure to win the play-offs. Keane, who is also understood to have told Owen Garvan, Colin Healy, Alan Quinn and Alex Bruce that they are no longer in his plans, is a big fan of the former England U21 international, who he signed when manager of Sunderland.

Cardiff’s financial situation is no longer quite as parlous as it was a few months ago when Town looked to sign left-back Mark Kennedy, the club are in the process of being taken over by a Malaysian consortium, and the Bluebirds are likely to want to keep hold of this season’s 21-goal top scorer.

Keane took Chopra from Cardiff to Sunderland for £5 million in the summer of 2007, the former Newcastle man netting eight times in 24 starts and 18 sub appearances during his time at the Stadium of Light.

The 26-year-old’s record in his spells with Cardiff is more prolific, the frontman scoring 22 goals in 44 games in his first and 30 in 67 starts and 11 appearances from the bench since returning, initially on loan during 2008/09.

Earlier on in the season, Keane said he would have been interested in signing Chopra last summer but was aware that his £3 million permanent move back to Wales was already all but done by the time he took over at Portman Road.

While Keane would clearly be delighted to have Chopra in his squad, the Blues boss recently questioned whether Town would be able to afford to pay the wages and fee for a striker of Chopra’s standing.

It’s little surprise that Keane sees Garvan, Quinn, Healy and Bruce as surplus to requirements with none of the four regulars in his side this season. All four are contracted until 2011.

Garvan came back into Keane’s side for the final day of the season match against Sheffield United, having been in and out of the team throughout the season, while Quinn was rarely involved during the second half of the campaign and Bruce and Healy sent out on loan to Leicester and Falkirk respectively.

Leicester are understood to be interested in signing Bruce permanently, although the clubs are yet to agree a fee for the Irish international defender.

Meanwhile, former Blue Darren Ambrose is reported to be in talks with QPR regarding personal terms after Crystal Palace’s administrators agreed a £750,000 fee with the club now managed by former Eagles’ boss Neil Warnock.

Manic Blue-
Well said sir,
although i think that Kean could buy Messi, Villa and Drogba and there would still be people on here moaning that he had wasted Money,
If and thats a big If we do get Chopra then that would be a massive signing for us as for a guy to come to a team who struggled last season from a team just missing out on promotion isn't going to be the fact that Ipswich is a lovely place and full of his friends is it, NO. It's the lure to play for a Good Manager who is driven by success, lets review it again at Xmas and see how many people are still moaning about Kean when were sitting 3rd or 4th in the league.

I'd be well chuffed with Chopra joining us but i'm sorry - until we get a manager in place who knows what he's doing and who's going to get us playing good, consistent football we are not going anywhere - don't care who Keane signs,he won't get the best out of them.

Don't say I told you so come october when we're still chugging along.

I really cant see us signing Chopra, he surely wants to move (if he dose want to move) for a club looking for auto promotion next season, if we still have Keane in charge i don't even feel the play offs are possible. Especially with the clubs coming up from league 1 the likes of Leeds and the scum, they are 2 clubs a lot bigger than us so the competition is increasing. If we are to get Chopra we need to do it quickly becasue i would imagine interest is high. COME ON TOWN!

Hogster1970.......Totally agree with you.Norris.Leadbitter.Quinny all good players, win tackles & are battlers that give 100%, but non of them have the creativity/skill/vision or killer passes that Garvs has.I feel it would be a big mistake to let him go.
Rumours are it he's attitude that is the problem.....Surely the Big Roy Keane can tame him can't he !!!!

If we get Chopra then hello the premier league!! This is the kinda guy we have been looking for ever sice the days of Stewart and Scowcroft!
I still think we should keep Garvan! He can do us a job when needs be! Unless we get Derry but that seems unlikely now!

No player in their right mind would sign for QPR based on who the manager there is Warnock will be sacked 5 games in like the rest of them

QPR had a shocking season of disruption and chopping and changing and yet they still finished above us , and Warnock is a proven manager at this level with limited resources and fiercely defends his team and players ,where as our manager had one good season with a newly relegated team spending the most money in the league ,who openly criticises his players after one game or one mistake . I wonder who Derry and Ambrose will sign for ?

Surco72,

I'd like a manager to defend me and then at the sight of relegation 'jump ship' so that they can keep there reputation up in th CCC,
Yes we had a bad season, rubbish infact. But did Kean leave incase we were going to get relegated, NO!!!
15 games in there would have been alot of Managers through the towel in but Kean stuck with it through all the abuse and in the end had play-off challenging form.
As for Openly critisising his players, who cares!!!! we do it every other saturday. There all pro's and if they can't take a bit of flack from there boss then they should come work where i do, i get paid alot less then them and i still get S**t off my boss, Who doesn't!!!

I would love us to sign Chopra as i feel he is just the type of forward we need and could see him linking well with Wickham. However I just cannot see it happening, even if Cardiff need the cash and except an offer from us, i'm sure there will plenty of other clubs interested, many who will offer him better wages and perhaps premiership football. If that was the case i'm sure his agent would advise against coming to ITFC

qpr will finish ahead of uss again caouse they have 1 big advantage they havent got roy and when there managers are shyte they move quickly to sack em all the loonitivck keanites were moaning last year about how town shouldnt be a club like qpr who get rid of useless managers cause it will get us nawhere guess what............even after jimbo spat the dummy and got shafted they still finishrd ahead of us keanos a loser and his supporters are a sad bunch of braindead drongo losers

Comeonthegoodtimes......Warnock had to leave Palace as they could not afford him as they are in administration . And as for Keane not jumping a sinking ship that is exactly what he did at Sunderland so to do it again within 2 years would have pretty much ended his managerial career so he had no choice ,and the reason we were in a relegation fight was his doing anyway !!
And not everyone reacts the same way to public humiliation some will go into their shell ,others will prove the manager wrong ,others wont give a sh1t as was proved many times last year ,this is when a good man manager comes into his own which Keane was clearly lacking last season .Look at the team spirit Holloway has and the bond with his players ,Keane didnt even go to the end of season awards

Get Chopra in, and peter wittingham in from Cardiff (43 games, 22 goals from midfield! Not to mention assists!)he played well in playoff final and surely at 25 is ideal for goals fr midfield and providing balls to wickham and Chopra/other strikers!!

I'm sorry, but we won't get Chopra. He'll go to a low-grade PL club - Blackpool being the obvious candidate. Nor will we get (m)any of the others we've been linked with so far. It will be a long hard summer: everyone is out for the same players, and I'm not sure we have the pulling power to get the best. I just hope we don't fall totally flat on the transfer front. But if we do, then we'll have to make the best of what we've already got! COYB

wisebluey... I'm 11 years old and even i undestand tht you can't put to much pressure on connor wickham he is too young if he gets a run out as a sub every week he'll still keep on improving he's more of a player for the future and as long as we can keep hold of him he'll be great for the future.
