Celtic Targeting Murphy
Celtic Targeting Murphy
Friday, 21st May 2010 08:41

Celtic are set to make a move for ex-Town loanee Daryl Murphy, according to reports in Scotland. The Glasgow giants are said to be ready to pay £900,000 for the Sunderland striker.

Murphy scored six goals in 18 games for the Blues between January and May and Town are understood to be very keen on making the switch a permanent deal with the player happy at Portman Road.

The Irish striker has two years left on his Sunderland deal and Celtic, if they are interested, are probably more likely to be able to match his earnings of around £20,000-a-week — double the Blues’ top wage — than Town.

Reading and Cardiff City have also been reported to have shown interest in the Waterford-born frontman.

Elsewhere, former Town manager Jim Magilton has been linked with the Colchester United job.

Murphy did say that he was going to take some time off to consider his options. I wouldnt take too much time over that one Darryl. Kerching.

More to the point are we really paying players £10,000 a week.....does that include win bonus, match fee, free meals ect.

I'm with the other comments so far - if he goes there I don't think we'll miss him that much. We should be in the market for someone better than him.

Celtic aren't interested in him. That is his agent speaking to get more out of silly us (fee/wages) etc when we sign him. I hope we don't!

Yes I am with the conensus that this would be good news, he has the ability but I feel he only has the desire to win a contract, once he has it he won't be bothered where his team are!

Hopefully someone else will come in for Lisbie, things on the colchester front will slow down due to AB going to Coventry,

That still leaves Counago, Priskin and Stead to sort out. I think if we have Wickham, Priskin, Counago and a new signing of superioir quality that will not be bad, although I fear Wickham will only be with us on loan (would love to keep him), Evans won't let £5m go, I would say he is too greedy and too much of a businesman.

AVERAGE PLAYER, WONT BE MISSED.6 goal wonder.

i cant believe he is so bloody popular , reading celtic , us and maybe others. desperate times for a striker. And he wasnt good enough as one for sunderland so played on the wing or the reserves. .

Let him go there! as others have said started well but faded, I would much prefer us to take a chance on a div 1 player who really wants to prove himself, rather than an any overpaid, un-interested, pre-madonna!

Think if Celtic are interested then we wont have much say anyway, big IF though as they have no manager so who is supposedly interested in Murphy? Got a feeling this one might drag out through the summer, I would say for £500,000 to £750,000 he might be a good addition, any more then we should walk away and look at other targets. We need pace up front thats for sure like a Defoe or David Johnson sort, must be someone out there who fits the bill, them and Wickham and thats a tasty front line!

Hope magilton gets job,he can have Lisbie!!! On the transfer front, again we are being linked with every one. One thing Keano MUST do is get these players in before the season starts, not in Sept/ Jan
Celtic can have Lisbie if magilton does not want him!!! Chopra or Hooper would be good.

How likely are the signings of Chops or Hooper? Chopra maybe if Cardiff do not get promoted and have to sell, they paid £4 million for him last summer though so he will command a sizeable fee £2.5 to £3.5 million I reckon which I personally cant see us spending. Hooper ok I think might come, but bigger clubs are also in for him which I cant see us being able to contend. Not being negative by the way, just realistic. There is plenty of loan options from the premiership-Jay Simpson at Arsenal is a good shout, Delfouneso at Villa etc or even lower league strikers-a stiker with pace is a must though!

Mixed feelings here. While I thing Murphy is not the best striker we can get, I am not so sure who we will attract... But also I don't believe Murphy will agree on such a wage cut at all so the problem is fixed by itself. He will decline a potential offer from us even if it is not Celtic that will be our competitor. As of who we will get I just have no idea - I just hope we get two good strikers who can materialize the goal situations we create. This will be the key for our success next season!
BTW if Cardiff go up we can forget about Chopra or anybody from their site. I also don't believe we will go for Hooper so it will be an interesting summer...
Good luck Roy!
