Murphy to Consider Future Over Summer
Murphy to Consider Future Over Summer
Tuesday, 13th Apr 2010 11:23

On-loan striker Daryl Murphy says he will consider his future over the summer once he has ended his loan spell with the Blues. The Republic of Ireland international has scored six goals in 16 games since joining Town on loan from Sunderland at the end of January.

The 27-year-old told the club site: "I've enjoyed it here, I've scored a few goals - should have scored a few more - and played in every game.

"I'll go back to Sunderland at the end of the season and have a holiday, meet up with family and friends and think about the future from there."

Murphy, who has previously said he would be interested in staying at Portman Road, is contracted to the Black Cats until 2012 and manager Roy Keane recently admitted that wages would be the big issue if the Blues were to decide to make Murphy a permanent signing in the summer. Town’s top wage is understood to be around the £12,000-a-week mark, while the striker is believed to be on double that at Sunderland.

Black Cats boss Steve Bruce has said that he would be willing to talk to Town about permanent deals regarding Murphy and fellow loanee David Healy.

Murphy says he feels that Town have the potential to have a much better 2010/11: "I obviously wasn't here at the start of the season when the club went 15 games or so without a win, but I'd say Ipswich is definitely going in the right direction now.

"There is the nucleus of a very good team here and the club is in a position to kick on and move forward next season.

"We have three games left and it's important to finish the season strongly and then push on from there."

Jordan Rhodes has doen little for Huddersfiled over the last few months and certainly would cut it at this level. RK got it right when he got rid !

i agree there's plenty of Holts around in the lower leagues who would jump at chance of trying to get into big time. So often we see opposition teams with very good players that come from smaller clubs. They seem more committed and if it doesnt work out then it costs us less. i would like to see less of the Sunderland and Irish influence with RK looking further afield such as Scandinavia, Africa or even local non-league. Chelmsofrd City have a Ricky Holmes a young fast free scoring winger who must be worth looking at.

Come on! This is the obvious that is happening. He was ecstatic in the beginning because he had three months loan ahead of him and it wouldn't be wise to make enemies among the fans from the get go. Now that he is at the end of his spell he is saying what we all knew - He prefers to get higher salary and not play. If this was not the case he would have joined us long, long ago... We need to get some of the better players in our division like Chopra and etc. We cannot expect somebody with a contract with a PM club till 2012 to just say "forget about half of my salary - let's play football!". It just doesn't work that way...

Just sign Murphy. What have you got to consider?

RetroBlue: utter guff. Rhodes has scored 3 in the last 4 games and has 21 for the season - his first full season as a pro. He's clearly rubbish!

I appreciate that it's a lower division but how you can be so certain he won't cut it in the Championship I do not know. He's 19, still learning.

It was a mistake to sell him. £850k is good money for an untried player, but it is not good money for a 19 year old who'd scored goals wherever he'd gone and was one for the future.

For example, as has been pointed out, what we need to be doing - with the salaries and transfers we can afford - is to look to younger players in the lower divisions (just as we did with David Johnson), and Rhodes sticks out like a sore thumb.

Oh well...

Naa - do you think we might possibly have first rights to buy with Rhodes??

As for Murphy. We need players who want to play for us. He's never worth £24k a week and if the club even consider breaking their salary structure for him then I'd be appalled.

If he's willing to take a cut then fine, he'd do well for us, I'm sure.

I really, really don't want Healy though.

super: I doubt it.

And even if we did, I can't see RK signing him. It would be admitting he'd made an error resigning him so soon after selling him.

Besides, after this season, he can't really sign unknown quantities (which Rhodes still is to an extent) he'll want to get proven players in I suspect - so expect a bunch of old Prem rejects.

If we go for Murphy at the start of the summer, it shows a massive lack of ambition from Keane.

We need to find a striker who could develop with us and potentially play in the premier league. Murphy is not that person, which is why Sunderland don't use him. We should be looking at Charlie Austin at Swindon or one of Southampton's strikers first or maybe even casting the net wider and looking abroad.

By all means look at Murphy at the end of the transfer window, if we can't get better, but with his scoring record here and his ridiculous wages, he can't be our first-choice striking target. If he is, Keane is a muppet.

We have to accept that whilst football is our passion, to the players it is a profession and they are not going to show loyalty to a club like we do. It is unrealistic to expect them to take a 50% drop in salary to come here as they have a short career and want to maximise their income. Sure, a few might do that in order to get more job satisfaction than can be gained sitting on a bench but they will be a minority. Hands up those of you who have posted above who will move jobs and drop 50%.

The other thing that has aggravated me all season is the demand for this elusive 20 goals a season striker. Of course our goals output this season has, at best, been disappointing but where is this man? How many players have scored 20 in the Championship this season? I believe none but maybe someone will correct me. We all want to improve but let's approach this with a touch of realism. It strikes me as amusing that the Portman Road cult heroes are/were Pablo Counago who has great skills but poor goal output and erratic commitment and Alex Bruce who has great commitment but erratic skills.

He can go as far as I'm concerned - yes he has scored a few goals but his workrate is very poor and not much different to Pablo. As for Jackson, Painter etc there is no way they are good enough for our Division as there is a massive gulf. Looks like Priskin/Stead and Wickham to me but I'm not too excited about that either to be honest as you need a big and a little partnership and Healy certainly is not the little man - he should go back as well. Lots to do Roy and as previous posts it will take a long time to sort out the squad - probably too long.
I am with Keane but still concerned about what next season may bring.

50years: good point regarding 20 goals striker. Our goal output definitely wouldn't suddenly be solved by signing a 'top' striker. The midfield has been severely lacking with goals and I think the reason for that is the same reason we have conceded fewer - the midfield are playing very defensively.

Puts too much pressure on the strikers.

Hopefully next year we can push on in midfield, but Leadbitter, Norris, Garvan, Walters, Peters, (even) Martin are all capable to adding something useful up front. They need to be released.

Can't really see what all the fuss is about. Murphy is entitled to think about things surely.

At this stage, I doubt that even RK knows for certain whether or not he'll be trying to sign him.

Lets be honest, he did well at the start but Murphy hasn't got Premiership ability week in week out, any player can turn it on for a game or two.

As most are stating, for 24k a week, this is runnish business. I would prefer to take a gamble on lower league high scorers (Paynter etc..).

To be honest, Wickham is going to be the man next year, you can see he is finally coming together (still cant get over he is only 17!), and i honestly believe Priskin will come good. Them two are my favoured front pairing for 2010/2011. I want to say Pablo as I am in love with the man but Priskin with a good run will score goals, im confident.

Healy can do one, not got it anymore and never has at any club level really??

Stead seems to have been forced out again, so we wont see him anymore me thinks.

Still hopefully a busy summer or transfers, looking forward to it!! COYB!

Florida and Sweden spot on
How many Premiership strikers have dropped down a division and looked like they really want to play - Murphy started well but he will not be motivated
Look at a Div 1 striker - who will be hungry to play and prove himself , Jackson is a good shout - Murphy will not be motivated , neither will Healy or Edwards.
Younger prem players on the fringe may be - Hope Sunderland buy big the summer and Colback comes back !!
Agree with naa we need an attacking midfielder who can add double figures
I want us to have a pretty settled squad by June for pre season but I fear old Keane will be scrambling around - oh , assuming he is still here , after his excellent first season

Somer - I think it's mostly about his earnings, how he can be worth that i don't know.

But Naa's right - goals come from all over the team, look at Lampy and Gerrard how many goals do they score per season?? Ambrose this season again from Midfield, we don't need a 20 a year stiker just someone who when given the chance can put it away and when not in a striking opportunity, someone who can bring others into play - granted Pablo does that, but it's the other areas where he lacks.

don not break the wage structure for someone that wouod not be able to make the transition to premiership

If our current top earners are around the £12k p/w mark, then I can't see that we'd pay double that for Murphy. The fact that Sunderland are willing to pay him that amount does not mean that we would or could.

As to whether he is actually worth £24K p/w, well - is anybody? You can't blame anyone for getting as much as they can. You can blame the clubs for being willing to (over)pay them.

He obviously doesn't share some of the views on here that we only need a couple of new players to sail this league. Maybe he knows his old mate Roys number is up at the end of next season come whatever?

If we are going to pay silly wages i rather old grandad kevin phillips down here on a 2 year contract ( he will be 37 at the end of it maybe? )

The guy is fit and puts the ball away time after time. He is the small man striker. the big man could be wickham , maybe priskin ( but hopeless in the air) but not the vastly overpaid murph and healy small man /big man act.

Rhodes should have been kept. What was he on ? 3k, 5k ? and we keep on bowditch an extra year , thatcher , yeo, quinn , etc etc why sell it save sod all money.

Every time the guy got the ball you had confidence he would find the net and he did and has done at huddersfield. Exactly what we needed all season and keane admitted our strikers cant hit the target for toffee. Rhodes could and regularly

and he was only 19 , not fast but he had good positional sense and great finishing ability. anyone see his goal the other week , bicycle kick , brilliant !

I think, to call him lazy is nonsense! He does not stop running, but it's not as obvious as Steads. Stead runs after lost causes whereas Murphy gets back and defends when he is needed and will chase a ball if there is a chance of him getting it! And Stead is no sprinter either!
Murphy is better in the air, better with the ball at his feet than Stead.
Saying that, if he isn't going to take a wage drop then he isn't worth it!

Consider his future, he has no future at safc. Not a premier League footballer in a million years. Probably the worst player i have ever seen in a red n white shirt in my 35 years as a fan, and i have seen some bad ones. Unfortunately, i fear he will sit tight on his lazy backside pocket the money and we will struggle to ship the bone-idle one out.
