Boss Roy Keane was pleased with the 2-1 victory over Reading but felt his side ought to have added to their lead during the second half.

Keane said: "It was a decent win for us. We should have done better when we were two up with the extra man, but we'll take the victory.

"It would have been nice if we'd got the third goal to kill the game off and we should have been a bit more clinical but there you go. We're not quite at that level yet but hopefully we'll get there.

"I'm pleased with the performance though and the hard work the players put in. The first goal was always important, especially the way the Reading started. They caused us problems, even when they were down to 10 men.”

Keane admitted that he was surprised to see referee Keith Stroud issue Reading’s Matt Mills with a red card: “My first thought when I saw the lad's challenge was that it was a yellow card. There was an element of a surprise when it was a red but if you go in with studs raised then there is always a risk.

"It would have been nice to have got that third goal and not have the nervy ending but we're happy with the victory and it sets us up for Derby on Monday."

Reading boss Brian McDermott was inevitably unhappy with the red card and will launch an appeal: "I've watched it five or six times in slow motion and at worst it was a yellow card.

"If we start taking tackles like that out of our game it'll be a sorry state of affairs. Millsy actually got the ball and when the referee sees it again I'm sure he'll agree. I'm sure it'll be rescinded.

"It was a tough tackle but a good tackle and nothing malicious. There was no intent and it was a fair tackle by both parties.

"He got all the ball and the guy who scored was his man, so it was obviously important and the key moment in the game.

"The two goals before half-time hurt us but we came out strong and I felt we could have nicked something. We needed to score five minutes earlier and if we'd done that it might have been different."

hogster1970 added 19:48 - Apr 3 not a bad game today but suprised not to see shane start left back as he has always looked very good, and even owen was not even on the bench neither, how ever a good display all round and 2 good goals. but we must use the wings more i feel if we are to end up a good side. i do get enoyed when our wingers spend more time in the center cirlce then on the wings

Mark added 20:47 - Apr 3 Was O'Connor injured today? Clearly the red card was all-important as before that Reading were playing the better football and we did not look like the home side. Being 2-0 up at half-time against 10 men, 2-1 isn't the greatest scoreline but a win is a win so well done lads. Let's hope we can follow it up with a point or three at Derby on Monday.

Mark added 21:46 - Apr 3 depressed - my point was that it was that despite having the extra man we lost the second half (2-0 half-time, 2-1 full-time). Keane said "We should have done better when we were two up with the extra man, but we'll take the victory." so really I am just agreeing with him.

But once again that was fairly uninspiring, unimaginative and mediocre at best - especially as against 10 men for the majority. But I must say that Reading impressed - and that's the form team that recently changed manager. Maybe there's a lesson there.

Like you all I am a town fan,I will go and watch if we change this awful style of football weve developed,you hear it on the radio from the experts and everyone else,we play too narrow and have no decent wingers,Walters was class a couple of seasons ago under Jim,god knows whats happened to him..... I will buy a season ticket if we get a new manager,but if we dont I shall hold back for another season because if we stick with this bloke i can only foresee another dire season fighting to stay up rather than aiming for playoffs/promotion. We are still way off top flight and have gone seriously downhill with the current set up. At least it looks like we'll have the Naaaaridge derby back next season,at least 2 games to look forward to. Up the Town.

There still seem far too many concerns with mr keane at the helm, and I don't share the views of the season-long optimists who think next season will be all rosey. Would much rather have a new manager who has more tactical nous, a wider scouting network, better man management skills, some in game touchline input, and plays players in their preferred positions.

MonterreyBlue added 20:01 - Apr 4 The Reading game was my 1st visit to Portman Road after 3 years of exile living in Mexico. I listen to every game live but was really excited and looking forward to going back to my beloved Portman Road and see how things are.... My verdict: Defence (inc. GK) looked excellant although prefer Peters as a winger. Midfield lacked any width and no runners from Midfield to support attack (only time i saw was Colback and he nearly scored) and we ran out of ideas or creativity when we got to within 30 yards of the goal. Wickham looked excellant when he came on, Murphy quiet but can see potential..... So, an attacking Midfielder, 2 wingers and a Striker and we are up hahaha.... The most depressing thing: The atmosphere. I sat in the Sir Bobby Lower as always and apart from the Section 6 kids it was very, very quiet. I know, its been a tough season and for the first 30 minutes there was nothing to sing about but really......silence!! Come on Guys. Conclusion: Stadium, exactly the same or maybe even starting to look out of date. Team, missing 2 wingers, attacking midfielder and a striker. Support, we can do better. Anyway, thats my honest opinion on what i saw but only from yesterday. Keane, im with him and can see some good things but also the problems are very obvious and need correcting. So...Derby tomorrow...Come on You Blues.
