Keane: We Deserved the Win
Keane: We Deserved the Win
Saturday, 20th Mar 2010 19:24

Town boss Roy Keane felt the Blues deserved their 1-0 victory over Barnsley but admitted that his side weren’t at their best.

Keane said: "It was a decent victory. To win without playing particularly well, we'll take that all day.

"It wasn't pretty but we'll have to take it, particularly given our position in the league - beggars can't be choosers.

"We started well, we had two or three good chances and it was a good goal that won it. Not a classic, but a good goal in the way Pablo showed a great work ethic and chased down a lost cause and that's what we want our strikers to do.

"Pablo and Daryl linked up well in the first half and we kept a clean sheet at the other end against a decent side. They are not on the edge of the play-offs for nothing.

"There has been too much talk this week, some silly headlines and criticism of two or three players. We're all in this together and I don't ask any more of my players than what I know they can produce.

"It would have been lovely to get a second goal and it would have settled the team down but it wasn't to be.

"We got an honest performance from them and that's all I can ever ask for. Whether we won or lost, it didn't really matter to me. All I wanted was an honest performance and I was content with the players.

"That's our second successive 1-0 win at home and that's always a good result."

Barnsley manager Mark Robins was embarrassed by Town’s winner: "We gave them a stupid goal. It was a comedy of errors and not one we want to repeat.

"He [keeper Luke Steele] can't explain it. He made a bad, poor decision to come out and then he left the ball on the touchline.

"After that he was always going to struggle to get back in goal. What we saw was a hot head. We shot ourselves in the foot. It was an embarrassing goal and something you rarely see.

"We're normally organised, fairly resolute and hard to break down, but today there was no doubt we gave them the goal.

"We didn't get started and were second best all over the park in the first half. Ipswich were hungrier and more energetic.

"In the second half we came out and had a go, but we'd already shot ourselves in the foot by then. It's not good enough and we've got to change that mindset.

"We had chances in the second half and huffed and puffed, but it was all about desire.

"Someone's got to want to go and put the ball in the back of the net. There were chances there but we just didn't take them. We were powder-puff."

We would all take 3 points all day long, hopefully Plymouth have a dodgy journey up here and we can smash them with a few goals.

Before all the Keane outers start ranting may i say that the only singing I heard today in the North was the name of our manager, KEANO!!!

I admire him for his straight talk, no nonsense approach, who cares if he rattles a few players cages, lets be honest they are paid to play for this club and some of them need to realise it.

Bring on Plymouth

Great result. Keep pushing on boys.

I said it before and Keano came out that week and denied it, but i do wonder about the natural fitness of a lot of our players.

the standard of football is dire, really shocking.

as soon as the season is over i fr one hope Keane gets his marching orders, tactically naive, hopeless man management skills, all about effort & nothing about skill, before he walked out yet again on his last club sunderland they were terrible to watch, i used to squirm watching the highlights of a sunderland game, so bad was the standard.

Keane out for me in the summer.

I agree with you Thetruth. Keane if given time will sort town out. the defence looks really solid and at last haves a mean streak about them bar the occasional blip something we havent had for a long time.
Hopefully sign murphy and get rid of some of the dead wood like Garvan wait for the abuse. I am sorry to say he is to slow and does not perform every match and you cant use the excuse he is young ect he has played over 150 games for town.

keane is building a team and the management skills ... this team WILL go far next season ... people say keane is arrogant, but he's the first to admit he's inexperienced and he is learning all the time. Surely an arrogant man would never admit that ?

anyway, up the Town .... and lets stick by our manager (even tho he's a bit mental in the head)

and 'F' it, we won today ... hurray !

Keano is King. Sometimes you have to hang your hat on a winner even though there will be ups and downs on the way.

Well done lads for a win today.Well done Roy.

Does anyone thing that Barnsley's on lone player from WBA-Filipe Teixeira- is worth a punt in the summer transfer market. A talented skillful and determined player ?

Not a classic by any means but well done for a lot more effort as we inch closer to the 50+ safety point. I firmly believe that the team will relax once we are safe and start playing the kind of football the squad should be capable of.
Still right behind Keano, all the knockers on here slate him for slating the players but when he gets it wrong he admits it! How refreshing that is! RK is a deeply complex man who stands by his principles. I, for one, dont give a toss if he upsets the pampered players like Garvan etc. If your given a job to do and dont do it expect a rollicking! I'm sure that happens in any job doesn't it? RK is passionate about what he wants and he might shout to get it - good ! I dont remember Clough or Ferguson being nice to their team when people dont play as required.
Keano, carry on clearing out the deadwood, it might mean that some of his buys didnt live up to expectations have to go but at least he will admit it. How much money has Benitez spent on players who subsequently disappear at a great loss? It happens.
Finally, when we are comfortably winning against Plymouth on Tue how about the North stand singing out a rendition of the old Paul Mariner tune for old times sake ? He deserves it so come on North Stand, get it rocking again !
Keano, keano !!

I think any one who questions his man management style is a wally. Keane's direct, open, honest and willing to place faith in those around him. I'd want and respect that from any manager in any profession in any walk of life.

Totally agree with Keaneish !! The man will get it right given time.
We've picked up 9 points out of 12 in our last 4 games .. going into another home game. Thats not bad at all ! In the summer keano can get rid of the rubbish and buy some quality players. Mid-table this year .. Not bad considering some people were talking about us getting relegated ! KEANO ! COYB !!

And people call pablo counago lazy...for goodness sake open your eyes!
We clearly didn't deserve a win, it was a good first half for us but we collapsed in the second and they could have easily got one or even two, we were hanging on!

A crucial three points today and if we beat Plymouth on Tuesday we can breathe a bit easier in terms of relegation. A good first half performance from most of the team except Edwards. The second half play was pretty negative and awful however, and changing to one-up-front at home to Barnsley is not something we are used to over recent seasons. We got the result, but I think many fans didn't come away feeling exhilerated with the performance.

Credit to D.Wright for that last ditch tackle in injury time. Please Roy, STICK WITH HIM! This back four is looking solid and there is no reason to change it.

Let's hope we can put a run together now so the season ticket application forms start to flow.

So it didn't matter to you whether we won or lost. For God sake man pick your words more carefully or if that really is your attitude pack your bags and GO

Firstly, I think Keane should stay. There are so many reasons why, but the main one is continuency. He'll get his desired squad together over the next six months, and then we'll reap the rewards. Signings in the summer are likely, though we probably won't see Colback coming back as he will probably make the Sunderland squad next term.
Keano needs time, too many "fans" want immediate success, but with that comes dissapointment. We had great success under GB, but it was sudden, and we went down quickly. As much as I loved finishing 5th in the prem, we went down due to sudden success as far as i'm concerned. (It was blooody marvellous beating IM at home though, wouldn't swap it for the world!)
Keane will sort a squad out over the next 6 months, get the players in HE wants, and get us int he top tier. That may take a year or two, and then stay up for as long as posssible. Hopefully we'll stay there for mor than 2 or 3 years, and then become a decent prem side.
Anything else is just wishful thinking...

As predicted a scrappy 9 points out of 12 and come Tuesday hopefully a decent 12 out of 15. This season has not been pretty but i believe it takes time to build a winning team.

I for one like Keane, even though i believe he has made some shocking decisions along the season. The bottom line is we all love the club and want to be flying high, to get there though we need to be patient. A new manager just means starting the process all over again.

Turning on the team and our manager will do no good at all. Staying faithful to the lads and shouting louder will. Yes the season is a right off for any glory but hey, at least the scum were in a lower division while we were playing sh*t.

Next season will be different, the boys will gel and results will come. Concerns over Keane will fade as he rights his wrongs and all of a sudden the fickle people will come back and the ground will be at 23000 again.

Yes i'm ever the optomist but hey i am the mental1.

COYB! Bleed blue blood, ITFC i love you! 3 points on tue please!!!!!

Spot on mental. It's about supporting the team, and especially the manager. If us fans round on the gaffer, it'll only go to the days of Duncan. We have a man who is "keane" to be a success, and I for one believe he's in it for not only the success of ITFC, but for himself. Why come to Iposwich? It's because he wants to be a success. And if we are a success, so is he. And then hopefully we'll become a success together. If not, he'll go on to bigger and better things, or we'll fail and so will he. But I believe that he'll take us up either next season or the one after. Either way, it should be Keane who takes charge of the next two seasons.

siebdykstra you MUST be having a joke, anything more than that is wishful thinking?
GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE CLOUDS! We havnt even cleared relegation from the CHAMPIONSHIP and you're talking about staying in the prem for 3 years and becoming a decent prem team! Deffinately not with this manager, hes a joke.

We have to keep the faith and keep backing the team, I reckon we will finish around 10th, A few will go in the summer some will come in and we have to give Keane another shot at it next season, I dont think he will stay past next summer if we dont at least make the play-offs in 2010/11, We are only a couple of players from a really strong starting eleven and with Mr.Evans help we will have a notbad First 16 to choose from.

Keep Smiling Everyone!!!

How do you risk playing decent football against scrappy teams???? You just have to play the best game you can, we WON and still people moan. Shut up budgies until we beat you in the derby games next season
Keane in!!!
COYB!!!

Simple guys - Keane will not attract the type of players we need
Players do not want to play for him - unless they are from his old guard
realist

BeeneyITFC added 21:54 - Mar 20
so your saying he wont attract good players, but he will attract players that he has already managed? surely if he was that bad they wouldnt want him to be their manager again!!
