Brentford Want Smith Return
Brentford Want Smith Return
Wednesday, 17th Mar 2010 09:14

Brentford manager Andy Scott says he will ask Town if Tommy Smith can return to Griffin Park to complete his loan spell now that Damien Delaney’s red card has been rescinded. Smith had been on a 93-day spell with the Bees prior to being recalled after Damien Delaney's now rescinded red card.

Scott said: "We have to look at getting a centre-half in. Obviously we're trying to bring in a centre-forward but defensively we're massively overstretched.

"We were going to re-address that situation after the Brighton game [which they lost 3-0 last night] anyway. Delaney's red card has been rescinded, so we'll speak to Ipswich."

However, Town may not be willing to allow Smith to go back to the League One side with Roy Keane saying on Monday that he now intends to keep him at Portman Road: “He’ll be back for the season. He’s done reasonably well there, he’s had the experience of playing for New Zealand and it was touch and go whether I’d let Tommy go anyway when we brought Pim back in.”

Ahnother option is that Pim Balkestein could return to Griffin Park having spent time on loan there prior to Smith's spell.

Meanwhile, Alan Curbishley and his former Charlton and West Ham assistant Mervyn Day were again spotted at last night’s match at Watford, apparently on a scouting mission.

Sounds reasonable, but after last nights debacle he may want to see Tommy in action. McAuley & DD are still the CB's for me but the LB has be nightmare all season. Maybe now DD has found his feet can he move back out there?

I don't know and I'm not sure RK does! I'd maybe prefer to see Pim return to Griffin Park?

I'm sure either Pim or Tommy could now go back to Brentford. Tommy getting games would obviously help his World Cup preparations. Whilst Pim could probably do with a good run of games now he's been sat on our bench for a few weeks. Thirdly, maybe we could let that take Troy Brown or Tom Eastman?

MaCuley and delaney are our 2 best central defenders so smith going back to brentford wouldnt be a bad thing as we have pim but then again maybe smith should be given a chance at the first team.

Corsham - O'Connor has been brilliant at LB since he's come in, one mistake last night and now you want him out? jesus, how can a guy gain experience if he doesn't play?

Why push Delaney to LB when he's been playing so well at centre back and like the post above Shane has been very impressive!

Just let him go its better for him to be playing games and not sitting on the bench.

At this stage, if we had nothing to play for, we can afford off games from youngsters gaining experience in the name of the bigger picture. But make no mistake we are well in the relegation dog fight with the bottom clubs show some form.

Acknowledge O'Conner has had a few good games and does look most likely to make that slot his, for me we're missing a TOP class LB. Smith seems to let too many in behind but he'll learn with games and O'Conner seems to read the game better than Smith but again his still learning.

I'm just not sure we can afford 'Still Learning' - if we can I'd play O'Conner LB every game! Not sure where that'll leave Smith and Pim to get experience? maybe not a Portman Rd.

My point, very poorly put across, was to take a look at Smith prior to returning him, as it was put - how can a guy gain experience if he doesn't play?
