Stead in Team of the Week
Stead in Team of the Week
Tuesday, 9th Mar 2010 10:34

On-loan Town striker Jon Stead has been named in the Football League’s Team of the Week after netting Coventry’s goal in their 1-0 victory at Peterborough on Saturday.

Stead has scored two goals in his last two games for the Sky Blues, having failed to net in his first two appearances.

Also in this week’s select team are Blackpool keeper Matthew Gilks, who helped prevent the Blues from scoring at Bloomfield Road despite having 22 shots on or off target, and former Town midfielder Darren Ambrose.

Team of the Week: Matthew Gilks (Blackpool), Matthew Connolly (QPR), Shaun Barker (Derby), Sean St Ledger (Preston), Chris Cohen (Nottm Forest), Darren Ambrose (Crystal Palace), Danny Guthrie (Newcastle), Alejandro Faurlin (QPR), Jon Stead (Coventry), Billy Sharp (Doncaster), Jay Emmanuel-Thomas (Doncaster).

tom.....you cant rely on one striker to get you goals, would you not be happier with both murphy and stead scoring together? You arent really very bright are you.

we obviously had to sell 2 to balance the books to get in 2 BETTER strikers. Stead is on incredibly high wages for someone with only 6 goals to his name, as I'm sure is Priskin with 2. We don't have an endless supply of money so yes, it is understandable that we had to sell 2 of pabs, stead and priskin, and I'd rather the latter 2 as Pabs does offer us something different, even if he rarely produces.

Two great responses - I was really getting depressed reading the crap in response to this article.

Still not sure why the likes of Kirbs and naaridge1 bother coming onto this site as all they have to say is negative and ill thought out drivel - Keane hasn't had a first great season but then again neither did Robson or Burley. He has got things wrong but also in my opinion a lot of things right. We have three decent keepers, a centreback pairing that looks pretty solid, a number of good additions to the squad in Leadbitter, O'Conner, Rosenior and Colback and a couple of Premiership strikers on load in the shape of Healy and Murphy.

Lets get this season over - hopefully stay up - and then get prepared for what can only be a much better second season under our manager Roy Keane.

Doesn't this just prove a point, he's a good player, but fans didn't get behind him, as soon as he starts scoring, we're all for him. Maybe people should welcome players and actually cheer them on instead of pushing them away. Was rather annoyed when he went out on loan, still needed him at the club.

Looks like Murphy will be in next weeks TOTW. What a cr@p decision by Roy to bring him in!

On a different note, I thought Wickham played extremely well when he came on; he bullied their back line, made a nusence of himself and seems to have become much stronger and more educated since the beginning of the season when he looked out of his depth. Could provide us with another threat of a different kind going forward-he seems to have a hint of Shefki Kuqi about him but with a better touch. Lets hope we can push on from this result and target the play-offs next.

So Murphy gets 5 goals in 8 games compared to Steads 6 goals in 6 months... Yes I can definitly see the point of view of fans calling Keano an idiot for loaning him! Get a perspective people, Stead was always gonna get a couple with the whole new club syndrome, if he plays as well as Murphy does tonight an keeps scoring for the next 2 or 3 weeks fair play, Otherwise get off Keanos back and let him get on with preventing us from going down.

I see all the moaners have gone quiet.

Anyone who thinks John Stead is the answer to our prayers is an idiot.

What manager in the right mind lets one of his top scoring players leave. I must admit i did not rate stead but i feel he has improved throughout this season and just as he started to get better for ipswich keane lets him go.

Well done stead for proven us all horribly wrong.

Yes J45, you are horribly wrong.

As someone else said, 5 goals in 8 games for Murphy, 6 in 6 months for Stead.

Do the maths.

tricky figures to work out when u compare games and months?
yes keane is useless and yes we would be higher with jim still in charge u can say all u like about what keane might do next year. but we heard it all before pre- season about how the messiah will return us to our rightfull place.in div 1 playing in europe every year all the male supporters members will gain an inch and their girlfriends and wifes an extra cup size all supporters will get a slab of their choice delivered free to their back doorstep the sun will shine forever and norwich will be relegated to div 4...instead we struggle to stay out of relegation zone can't beat bottom teams at home consistantly come up against the best keepers in the world.hear endless explanations from roy about groundhogs and dissapointments and have endless false dawns while never getting any nearer to playoffs.....i think i'll have another cider

Keane hasn't been in the Team of the Week for a while. I suggest that it is even trickier to compare players and managers.

Stead = 6 goals in 22 league appearances

D.Murphy = 5 goals in 8 appearances

So if Murphy bangs one in against Scunny this weekend he'll have matched Stead's total in less than half the amount of appearances. If not then he'll still have another 12 appearances to bang one in before his goal to game ratio is equal to or worse than Stead's.

Simples.

Why are people comparing Murphy and Stead why not Healy and Stead ?Priskin was shipped out to get Murphy why didnt we keep Stead aswell ?Stead record looks a lot better than has bin Healys !!
And when this year was Stead given 8 games in a row like Murphy ?His only spell in the team was before his suspension and he was scoring regularly .
And Matt the blue Steads record this year is 8 goals in 16 starts ,good for any striker, coming on for 5 mins here and there and playing right wing doesnt count surely only if your trying to defend Keane for another ridiculous decision to let a proven goalscorer in this league go whilst you bring in someone who scored goals regularly over 4 years ago
