Healy and Garvan Win Caps
Wednesday, 3rd Mar 2010 22:20

Striker David Healy and midfielder Owen Garvan added to their international caps on Wednesday evening but neither finished on the winning side.

Healy won his 79th cap as Northern Ireland lost 1-0 to Albania in a friendly in Tirana, while Garvan skippered the Republic of Ireland’s U21s and won his 15th cap as they lost 2-1 to Armenia in Dublin in a European U21 Championships qualifier.

Meanwhile, Tommy Smith is set to win his first cap with New Zealand overnight in a friendly against Mexico.

Elsewhere, academy midfielder Josh Carson netted for Northern Ireland’s U17s as they defeated Norway 4-3 in Ballymoney in the first of two friendlies on Tuesday. Carson is one of three Town players in the squad for the games along with full-back Rory McKeown and midfielder Cormac Burke. The second match is on Thursday.

Two more academy players, striker Ronan Murray and midfielder David Cawley, complete their Republic of Ireland U19 training camp at Bisham Abbey on Thursday. The camp is part of the Irish squad’s preparations for their UEFA U19 elite stage qualifiers in Ukraine in May.

Surely that has to be a shockingly embarrassing result for Garvan's side. Unless Armenia have world-class players coming through?

Ireland's U21s are bottom of group 2 with 4 draws and 3 defeats so not at all a strong side. maybe a certain RK might take over as a preclude to replacing Trap!

Garvan had a couple of chances to score.

Come on Roy, to win games you need a play maker and Owen is just that man.Its alright having players like Leadbitter and Norris winning the balls in the middle, but you need someone to be creative once we have the ball. Balance.
