Keane Hopeful Sunderland Won't Recall Colback
Keane Hopeful Sunderland Won't Recall Colback
Tuesday, 16th Feb 2010 13:24

Town manager Roy Keane is hopeful that Sunderland won’t recall loan midfielder Jack Colback from his spell at Portman Road despite the Black Cats suffering a number of injuries. The Blues boss says he has been avoiding calls from Sunderland manager Steve Bruce just in case, however, Bruce himself says he's happy with the 20-year-old remaining at Town.

Asked if he was worried that Colback, who is due to remain with Town until the end of the season, might get called back early, Keane said: “A little bit! I missed a call from Brucey last week, so I avoided calling him back. But I’ve spoken to him and he knows that Jack is playing regularly for us and as much as he’s got injuries, one or two are nearly fit.

“At the moment, fingers crossed, he’s not needed to call him back. But it would be a concern if he were to recall him without a shadow of a doubt, because Jack’s an important player.

“Having said that, he’s not our player and we have to be respectful if Sunderland do want him back. Brucey still has a decent number of players, I know he picked up a few suspensions last week, but fingers crossed he won’t be looking to get Jack back.

“I’m sure he will be looking forward to getting him back at the end of the season, but Jack’s enjoying it, he’s been a big, big plus for us. Good player, good lad, good attitude. He’s got a chance of being a top player.

“But going back to play for Sunderland is a big challenge because there’s such a big gap between the Premiership and the Championship, we all know that.”

Steve Bruce seems happy enough that Colback is getting experience with the Blues: "The last thing I want to do is call them [Colback and Martyn Waghorn, who is on loan at Leicester] back to cover for a week or two weeks.

"We've seen the benefit of Jordan [Henderson] going out on loan last season and I think that will benefit them too."

Colback is one of three players on loan from the Black Cats and Keane admits that it’s not been easy bringing in players from the Premier League, given the money that the likes of Daryl Murphy and David Healy are on at the Stadium of Light: “It’s the wages that are often the issue, not necessarily transfer fees.

“I think the owner’s been pretty good here, not just to me but to the previous manager. When you get players from the Premiership, they’re certainly not on peanuts.

“It’s a balancing act. We want to get in the Premiership, it’ll be very difficult this year, but if we want to do it next year we want to have the right balance to the squad in terms of the right players, the right characters and the right wages.”

Try and get him on a permanent deal Keano!
He's got more chance of playing games week in week out here than at Sunderland.

If jack doesn't make it as a player, he's alwats got his modelling to fall back on.

Perhaps that's the reason for the haircut and playing him at left back, Roy is trying to disguise him as Ben Thatcher

Fingers crossed Sunderland dont call him back though i don't think he would cut it just yet in premiership, such a huge jump that i can't see Colback making a big impact to keep Sunderland up.....

there lies the danger's of having a team relying on teams made up of loan players.Hopefully it doesnt happen, .

Well there's a co-insidence. when I first read this news, I said to myself 'I hope he doesn't have to go back to Sunderland'. Low and behold Roy is thinking on the same lines ! Do any other readers have these sorts of coinsidences after Roys comments ?

Jesney Havoc - You're right. Roy said...... "I missed a call from Brucey last week, so I avoided calling him back" and so it is. Bruce Forsyth called me last week and I didn't return his call.

It was probably a call to have a chat about Alex going out on loan - not the recall of half the Sunderland Reserves!

frenchblue that's hilarious lol

dirtydingusgee Colback can be recalled because of his age only
it is very unlikely that there is a recall option in the deals for Healy and Murphy, and certainly not Rosseinor given the circumstances of his loan in the first place so I don't think there is any worry of losing the "whole team" to loan recalls.
even if the new Scholes does go home he is a nice prospect one we should try and get permo but we have a couple of other players of equal calibre to play in the positions he does so it wouldn't ruin us and he can always come back again

This is good news, as hopefully most will agree that Jack has been a very good signing (albeit on loan).

Good to hear Roy talking about 'balancing acts'. Hopefully this will put to bed why Stead had to leave - we have to balance the books. We are not Chelsea, Liverpool or Man Utd!

Hope he stays right enough. I have to say though at the begining of the season i was thinking he wasn't up to much however he's improved no end and is now showing why he's such a prospect. If we can, would be great to get him on a perm contract.

Why let Stead go!!!! He was very good in the matches leading up to his suspension! Another very poor managerial decision by Mr Keane. Sort it out!

Any chance that Sunderland can recall Keane?

It's pathetic that we have to rely on Sunderland fringe players in order to survive in this League. At Peterborough we have four loanees that started. How does this bode for our future???

I hope Colback doesn't get recalled as he has been one of our top players this year, however, he has not been performing lately.
